Lambda-N scattering length from the reaction gamma d -> K^+ Lambda n

The perspects of utilizing the strangeness-production reaction gamma d -> K^+ Lambda n for the determination of the Lambda n low-energy scattering parameters are investigated. The spin observables that need to be measured in order to isolate the Lambda n singlet (1S0) and triplet (3S1) states are identified. Possible kinematical regions where the extraction of the Lambda n scattering lengths might be feasible are discussed.

Dispersive and absorptive corrections to the pion-deuteron scattering length

We present a parameter--free calculation of the dispersive and absorptive contributions to the pion--deuteron scattering length based on chiral perturbation theory. We show that once all diagrams contributing to leading order to this process are included, their net effect provides a small correction to the real part of the pion--deuteron scattering length. At the same time the sizable imaginary part of the pion--deuteron scattering length is reproduced accurately.

Dynamics of $^{1}S_0$ diproton formation in the $pd\to \{pp\}_sn$ and $pN\to \{pp\}_sπ$ reactions in the GeV region

Mechanisms for the production of $^1S_0$ diproton pairs, ${pp}_s$, in the $pd\to {pp}_s n$ reaction are studied at proton beam energies 0.5 -- 2 GeV in kinematics similar to those of backward elastic $pd$ scattering. This reaction provides valuable information on the short-range $NN$ and $pd$ interactions that is complementary to that investigated in the well known $pd\to dp$ and $dp\to p(0^\circ)X$ processes. The $pd\to {pp}_sn$ reaction is related to the subprocesses $π^0 d\to pn$ and $pN\to {pp}_s π$ using two different one--pion--exchange (OPE) diagrams. Within both these models a reasonable agreement could be obtained with the data below 1GeV. The similar energy dependence of the $pd\to\{pp\}_s n$ and $pd\to dp$ cross sections and the small ratio of about 1.5% in the production of $\{pp\}_s$ to deuteron final states follow naturally within the OPE models.

KKbar photoproduction from protons

We study the contribution of the Drell mechanism driven by K^+ and K^- exchange to the reaction gamma N -> KKbar N. Our calculation implements the full KN and KbarN reaction amplitudes in the form of partial wave amplitudes taken from a meson-exchange model (KN) and a partial wave analysis (KbarN), respectively. Comparing our results to data of the LAMP2 collaboration we observe that the Drell mechanism alone cannot describe the large Lambda(1520) photoproduction rate observed experimentally. We argue that the discrepancy could be due to significant contributions from K*-meson exchange with subsequent excitation of the Lambda(1520) resonance. After adding such contributions to our model a good agreement of the LAMP2 experiment is achieved. When applying the same model to the recent SAPHIR data we find an excellent description of the K^+p spectrum and can determine the parameters of the Lambda(1600) P01 resonance, M_R = 1617 +/- 2 MeV and Gamma_R = 117 +/- 4 MeV, from the K^-p mass distribution.

Advances in the field-theoretic understanding of pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions

We study the production amplitude for the reaction $NN\to NNπ$ up to next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory. We show that the irreducible chiral loops at this order exactly cancel those terms that arise from the off-shell parts of the $πN$ rescattering vertex. This cancellation is required for formal consistency of the whole scheme. The net effect of the inclusion of all next-to-leading order loops is to enhance the leading rescattering amplitude by a factor of 4/3 compared to phenomenological studies, bringing its contribution to the cross section for $pp\to dπ^+$ close to the experimental value.

Kaon-Deuteron Scattering at Low Energies

We review the experimental information on the K^+d reaction for K-meson momenta below 800 MeV/c. The data are analysed within the single scattering impulse approximation -- utilizing the Juelich kaon-nucleon model -- that allows to take into account effects due to the Fermi motion of the nucleons in the deuteron and the final three-body kinematics for the break-up and charge exchange reaction. We discuss the consistency between the data available for the K^+d -> K^+np, K^+d -> K^0pp and K^+d -> K^+d reactions and the calculations based on the spectator model formalism.

Phenomenology of the Lambda/Sigma^0 production ratio in pp collisions

We show that the recently measured asymmetry in helicity-angle spectra of the Lambda-hyperons produced in the reaction pp -> K^+Lambda p reaction and the energy dependence of the total pp -> K^+Lambda p cross section can be explained consistently by the same Lambda p final-state interaction. Assuming that there is no final-state interaction in the Sigma^0 p channel, as suggested by the available data, we can also reproduce the energy dependence of the Lambda/Sigma^0 production ratio and, in particular, the rather large ratio observed near the reaction thresholds. The nominal ratio of the Lambda and Sigma^0 production amplitudes squared, i.e. when disregarding the final-state interaction, turns out to be about 3, which is in line with hyperon production data from proton and nuclear targets available at high energies.

Comment on "Mass and KΛCoupling of the N*(1535)"

We comment on a recent paper by B.C. Liu and B.S. Zou [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 042002 (2006)] where it was argued that the coupling of the N*(1535) to KΛis even larger than its coupling to the ηN channel. Specifically, we point out that recently measured Dalitz plot distributions for pp -> pK^+Λprovide clear evidence for the importance of (pΛ) final-state interactions in this reaction and, at the same time, exclude a decisive role of the N*(1535) resonance, in contradiction to claims made by Liu and Zou.

On the strong energy dependence of the e^+e^- to ppbar amplitude near threshold

We study the energy dependence of the e^+e^- to ppbar cross section close to the two-nucleon threshold, recently reported by the BaBar collaboration. Our analysis also includes the pbarp to e^+e^- data collected by PS170 collaboration and the e^+e^- to NNbar data from the FENICE collaboration. We show that the near-threshold enhancement in the e^+e^- to ppbar cross section can be explained by the final-state interaction between proton and antiproton in the 3S1 partial wave, utilizing the Juelich nucleon-antinucleon model. As a consequence, the strong dependence of the proton electromagnetic form factors on the momentum transfer close to the two-nucleon threshold is presumably also driven by this final-state interaction effect. This result is in line with our previous studies of the near-threshold enhancement of the ppbar invariant mass spectrum seen in the J/Psi to gamma ppbar decay by the BES collaboration and in the B+ to ppbar K+ decay by the BaBar collaboration.

ppbar enhancement in B and J/Psi decay

The near-threshold enhancement in the ppbar invariant mass spectrum from the B^+ -> K^+ ppbar decay reported recently by the BaBar Collaboration is studied within the Jülich NNbar model. We illustrate that the invariant mass dependence of the ppbar spectrum close to the threshold can be reproduced by the final state interactions. This explanation is in line with our previous analysis of the ppbar invariant mass spectrum from the J/Psi -> gamma ppbar decay measured by the BES Collaboration. We also comment on a structure found recently in the pi^+ pi^- eta' mass spectrum of the radiative J/Psi decay by the BES Collaboration. In particular we argue that one should be rather cautions in bringing this structure in connection with the enhancement found in the ppbar invariant mass spectrum or with the existence of NNbar bound states.

Insights on scalar mesons from their radiative decays

We estimate the rates for radiative transitions of the lightest scalar mesons f_0(980) and a_0(980) to the vector mesons rho and omega. We argue that measurements of the radiative decays of those scalar mesons can provide important new information on their structure.

Resonances and final state interactions in the reaction pp->pK^+Lambda

A study of the strangeness production reaction pp->pK^+Lambda for excess energies of epsilon \le 150 MeV, accessible at high-luminosity accelerator facilities like COSY, is presented. Methods to analyze the Dalitz plot distribution and angular spectra in the Jackson and helicity frames are worked out and suitable observables for extracting information on low lying resonances that couple to the K-Lambda system and for determining the Lambda-p effective-range parameters from the final state interaction are identified and discussed. Furthermore, the chances for identifying the reaction mechanism of strangeness production are investigated.

Aspects of phi-meson production in proton-proton collisions

We analyze near-threshold cross section data for the reaction pp->pp phi published by the DISTO collaboration and recent, still preliminary results presented by the ANKE Collaboration. We formulate a procedure to evaluate the OZI ratio at low energies by taking into account corrections from the kinematics and the final-state interaction. Combining the new data with the few measurements available at higher energies we give a limit for the OZI rule violation and estimate the possible contribution from a five-quark baryonic resonance coupled to the phi-p system.

Towards a field theoretic understanding of NN->NNpi

We study the production amplitude for the reaction NN->NNpi up to next--to--leading order in chiral perturbation theory using a counting scheme that takes into account the large scale introduced by the initial momentum. In particular we investigate a subtlety that arises once the leading loop contributions are convoluted with the NN wavefunctions as demanded by the non--perturbative nature of the NN interaction. We show how to properly identify the irreducible contribution of loop diagrams in such type of reaction. The net effect of the inclusion of all next-to-leading order loops is to enhance the leading rescattering amplitude by a factor of 4/3, bringing its contribution to the cross section for pp->dpi+ close to the experimental value.

Extraction of scattering lengths from final-state interactions

A recently proposed method based on dispersion theory, that allows to extract the scattering length of a hadronic two-body system from corresponding final-state interactions, is generalized to the situation where the Coulomb interaction is present. The steps required in a concrete practical application are discussed in detail. In addition a thorough examination of the accuracy of the proposed method is presented and a comparison is made with results achieved with other methods like the Jost-function approach based on the effective-range approximation. Deficiencies of the latter method are pointed out. The reliability of the dispersion theory method for extracting also the effective range is investigated.

The Juelich hyperon-nucleon model revisited

A one-boson-exchange model for the hyperon-nucleon (ΛN, ΣN) interaction is presented. The model incorporates the standard one boson exchanges of the lowest pseudoscalar and vector meson multiplets with coupling constants fixed by SU(6) flavor symmetry relations. As the main new feature of the model, the contributions in the scalar--isoscalar (σ) and vector--isovector (ρ) exchange channels are now constrained by a microscopic model of correlated ππand K \bar K exchange. Additional short-ranged ingredients of the model in the scalar--isovector (a_0) and scalar--isospin-1/2 (κ) channels are likewise viewed as arising from meson-meson correlations but are treated phenomenologically. With this model a satisfactory reproduction of the available hyperon-nucleon data can be achieved.

Spin observables of the reactions NN -> DeltaN and pd -> Delta (pp)(1S0) in collinear kinematics

A general formalism for double and triple spin-correlations of the reaction NN -> DeltaN is developed for the case of collinear kinematics. A complete polarization experiment allowing to reconstruct all of the four amplitudes describing this process is suggested. Furthermore, the spin observables of the inelastic charge-exchange reaction pd -> Delta^0(pp)(1S0) are analyzed in collinear kinematics within the single pN scattering mechanism involving the subprocess pn -> Delta^0p. The full set of spin observables related to the polarization of one or two initial particles and one final particle is obtained in terms of three invariant amplitudes of the reaction pd -> Delta (pp)(1S0) and the transition form factor d->(pp)(1S0). A complete polarization experiment for the reaction pd -> Delta^0(pp)(1S0) is suggested which allows one to determine three independent combinations of the four amplitudes of the elementary subprocess NN -> DeltaN.
