Optical Mixing Controlled Stimulated Scattering instabilities: Suppression of SRS by the Controlled Introduction of Ion Acoustic and Electron Plasma Wave Turbulence

In a series of experiments on the Omega laser facility at LLE, we have demonstrated the suppression of SRS in prescribed spectral windows due to the presence of externally controlled levels of ion acoustic waves (IAW, by crossing two blue beams at the Mach -1 surface) and electron plasma waves (EPW, by crossing a blue and a green beam around a tenth critical density plasma) generated via optical mixing. We have further observed SRS backscattering of a green beam when crossed with a blue pump beam, in whose absence, that (green beam) backscattering signature was five times smaller. This is direct evidence for green beam amplification when crossed with the blue. Additional proof comes from transmitted green beam measurements. A combination of these techniques may allow the suppression of unacceptable levels of SRS near the light entrance hole of large-scale hohlraums on the NIF or LMJ.

Interference between magnetic field and cavity modes in an extended Josephson junction

An extended Josephson junction consists of two superconducting electrodes that are separated by an insulator and it is therefore also a microwave cavity. The superconducting phase difference across the junction determines the supercurrent as well as its spatial distribution. Both, an external magnetic field and a resonant cavity intrafield produce a spatial modification of the superconducting phase along the junction. The interplay between these two effects leads to interference in the critical current of the junction and allows us to continuously tune the coupling strength between the first cavity mode and the Josephson phase from 1 to -0.5. This enables static and dynamic control over the junction in the ultra-strong coupling regime.

A Precision Angle Sensor using an Optical Lever inside a Sagnac Interferometer

We built an ultra low noise angle sensor by combining a folded optical lever and a Sagnac interferometer. The instrument has a measured noise floor of 1.3 prad / Hz^(1/2) at 2.4 kHz. We achieve this record angle sensitivity using a proof-of-concept apparatus with a conservative N=11 bounces in the optical lever. This technique could be extended to reach sub-picoradian / Hz^(1/2) sensitivities with an optimized design.

Cavity sideband cooling of the Josephson phase

An extended Josephson junction intrinsically couples the superconducting current to the microwave cavity in the insulating barrier. We demonstrate that this coupling produces sidebands in the microwave cavity resonances of the junction. By measuring the switching current distribution, we show that microwave radiation at sidebands brings the Josephson phase out of equilibrium. In particular, the effective phase temperature is reduced or enhanced through anti-Stokes and Stokes scattering, respectively. Phase cooling and heating both increase with microwave power.

Proximity Effect and Multiple Andreev Reflections in Diffusive SNS Junctions

We present a theory of the current-voltage characteristics in diffusive superconductor-normal-metal-superconductor junctions. By solving the time-dependent Usadel equations we are able to describe the phase-coherent transport for arbitrary length of the normal wire. We show how the interplay between proximity effect and multiple Andreev reflections gives rise to a rich subgap structure in the conductance and how it is revealed in the non-equilibrium distribution function.
