Stratospheric aerosol source inversion: Noise, variability, and uncertainty quantification

Stratospheric aerosols play an important role in the earth system and can affect the climate on timescales of months to years. However, estimating the characteristics of partially observed aerosol injections, such as those from volcanic eruptions, is fraught with uncertainties. This article presents a framework for stratospheric aerosol source inversion which accounts for background aerosol noise and earth system internal variability via a Bayesian approximation error approach. We leverage specially designed earth system model simulations using the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). A comprehensive framework for data generation, data processing, dimension reduction, operator learning, and Bayesian inversion is presented where each component of the framework is designed to address particular challenges in stratospheric modeling on the global scale. We present numerical results using synthesized observational data to rigorously assess the ability of our approach to estimate aerosol sources and associate uncertainty with those estimates.

Duals of simple two-sided vector spaces

Let $K$ be a perfect field and let $k \subset K$ be a subfield. In previous work of the second author and C. Pappacena, left finite dimensional simple two-sided $k$-central vector spaces over $K$ were classified by arithmetic data associated to the extension $K/k$. In this paper, we continue to study the relationship between simple two-sided vector spaces and their associated arithmetic data. In particular, we determine which arithmetic data corresponds to simple two-sided vector spaces with the same left and right dimension, and we determine the arithmetic data associated to the left and right dual of a simple two-sided vector space. As an immediate application, we prove the existence of the non-commutative symmetric algebra of any $k$-central two-sided vector space over $K$ which has the same left and right dimension.

The Planetary Nebulae Spectrograph: the green light for Galaxy Kinematics

Planetary nebulae are now well established as probes of galaxy dynamics and as standard candles in distance determinations. Motivated by the need to improve the efficiency of planetary nebulae searches and the speed with which their radial velocities are determined, a dedicated instrument - the Planetary Nebulae Spectrograph or PN.S - has been designed and commissioned at the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope. The high optical efficiency of the spectrograph results in the detection of typically ~ 150 PN in galaxies at the distance of the Virgo cluster in one night of observations. In the same observation the radial velocities are obtained with an accuracy of ~ 20 km/s
