Magnetic imaging of superconducting qubit devices with scanning SQUID-on-tip

We use a scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) to image the magnetic flux produced by a superconducting device designed for quantum computing. The nanometer-scale SQUID-on-tip probe reveals the flow of superconducting current through the circuit as well as the locations of trapped magnetic flux. In particular, maps of current flowing out of a flux-control line in the vicinity of a qubit show how these elements are coupled, providing insight on how to optimize qubit control.

Bouncing Wave Packets, Ehrenfest Theorem, and Uncertainty Relation based upon a new Concept for the Momentum of a Particle in a Box

For a particle in a box, the operator $-i\partial_x$ is not self-adjoint and thus does not qualify as the physical momentum. As a result, in general the Ehrenfest theorem is violated. Based upon a recently developed new concept for a self-adjoint momentum operator, we reconsider the theorem and find that it is now indeed satisfied for all physically admissible boundary conditions. We illustrate these results for bouncing wave packets which first spread, then shrink, and return to their original form after a certain revival time. We derive a very simple form of the general Heisenberg-Robertson-Schr\"odinger uncertainty relation and show that our construction also provides a physical interpretation for it.

Boosting terahertz generation in laser-field ionized gases using a sawtooth wave shape

Broadband ultrashort terahertz (THz) pulses can be produced using plasma generation in a noble gas ionized by femtosecond two-color pulses. Here we demonstrate that, by using multiple-frequency laser pulses, one can obtain a waveform which optimizes the free electron trajectories in such a way that they reach the highest velocity at the electric field extrema. This allows to increase the THz conversion efficiency to the percent level, an unprecedented performance for THz generation in gases. Besides the analytical study of THz generation using a local current model, we perform comprehensive 3D simulations accounting for propagation effects which confirm this prediction. Our results show that THz conversion via tunnel ionization can be greatly improved with well-designed multicolor pulses.

Tailoring THz radiation by controlling tunnel photoionization events in gases

Applications ranging from nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy to remote sensing require broadband and intense THz radiation which can be generated by focusing two-color laser pulses into a gas. In this setup, THz radiation originates from the buildup of the electron density in sharp steps of attosecond duration due to tunnel ionization, and subsequent acceleration of free electrons in the laser field. We show that the spectral shape of the THz pulses generated by this mechanism is determined by superposition of contributions from individual ionization events. This provides a straightforward analogy with linear diffraction theory, where the ionization events play the role of slits in a grating. This analogy offers simple explanations for recent experimental observations and opens new avenues for THz pulse shaping based on temporal control of the ionization events. We illustrate this novel technique by tailoring the spectral width and position of the resulting radiation using multi-color pump pulses.

Theory of plasmon-enhanced high-harmonic generation in the vicinity of metal nanostructures in noble gases

We present a semiclassical model for plasmon-enhanced high-harmonic generation (HHG) in the vicinity of metal nanostructures. We show that both the inhomogeneity of the enhanced local fields and electron absorption by the metal surface play an important role in the HHG process and lead to the generation of even harmonics and to a significantly increased cutoff. For the examples of silver-coated nanocones and bowtie antennas we predict that the required intensity reduces by up to three orders of magnitudes and the HHG cutoff increases by more than a factor of two. The study of the enhanced high-harmonic generation is connected with a finite-element simulation of the electric field enhancement due to the excitation of the plasmonic modes.

Ultrafast spatio-temporal dynamics of terahertz generation by ionizing two-color femtosecond pulses in gases

We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of spatio-temporal propagation effects in terahertz (THz) generation in gases using two-color ionizing laser pulses. The observed strong broadening of the THz spectra with increasing gas pressure reveals the prominent role of spatio-temporal reshaping and of a plasma-induced blue-shift of the pump pulses in the generation process. Results obtained from (3+1)-dimensional simulations are in good agreement with experimental findings and clarify the mechanisms responsible for THz emission.

Generation of terahertz radiation from ionizing two-color laser pulses in Ar filled metallic hollow waveguides

The generation of THz radiation from ionizing two-color femtosecond pulses propagating in metallic hollow waveguides filled with Ar is numerically studied. We observe a strong reshaping of the low-frequency part of the spectrum. Namely, after several millimeters of propagation the spectrum is extended from hundreds of GHz up to ~150 THz. For longer propagation distances, nearly single-cycle near-infrared pulses with wavelengths around 4.5 um are obtained by appropriate spectral filtering, with an efficiency of up to 0.25%.

Suppression of coherence degradation due to plasma contribution in high-power supercontinuum generation in coated metallic hollow waveguides

We study the suppression of noise degradation in high-power soliton-induced supercontinuum generation under the influence of plasma contributions in metallic dielectric-coated hollow waveguides. The high coherence of the supercontinuum is related to the coherent seed components formed by the abruptly rising plasma density. We predict the generation of highly coherent supercontinua with two-octave broad spectra and spectral power densities in the range ofMW/nm in such waveguides.

High-power supercontinuum generation in dielectric-coated metallic hollow waveguides

In this Letter we theoretically study a novel approach for soliton-induced supercontinuum generation based on the application of metallic dielectric-coated hollow waveguides. Low loss of such waveguides permits the use of smaller diameters with enhanced dispersion control and enables the generation of two-octave-broad spectra with unprecedentedly high spectral peak power densities up to five orders of magnitude larger than in standard PCFs with high coherence. We also predict that high-power supercontinua in the vacuum ultraviolet can be generated in such waveguides.
