First determination of the strange and light quark masses from full lattice QCD

We compute the strange quark mass $m_s$ and the average of the $u$ and $d$ quark masses $\hat m$ using full lattice QCD with three dynamical quarks combined with experimental values for the pion and kaon masses. The simulations have degenerate $u$ and $d$ quarks with masses $m_u=m_d\equiv \hat m$ as low as $m_s/8$, and two different values of the lattice spacing. The bare lattice quark masses obtained are converted to the $\msbar$ scheme using perturbation theory at $O(alpha_s)$. Our results are: $m_s^\msbar$(2 GeV) = 76(0)(3)(7)(0) MeV, $\hat m^\msbar$(2 GeV) = 2.8(0)(1)(3)(0) MeV and $m_s/\hat m$ = 27.4(1)(4)(0)(1), where the errors are from statistics, simulation, perturbation theory, and electromagnetic effects, respectively.

Semileptonic D->pi/K and B->pi/D decays in 2+1 flavor lattice QCD

We present results for form factors of semileptonic decays of $D$ and $B$ mesons in 2+1 flavor lattice QCD using the MILC gauge configurations. With an improved staggered action for light quarks, we successfully reduce the systematic error from the chiral extrapolation. The results for $D$ decays are in agreement with experimental ones. The results for B decays are preliminary. Combining our results with experimental branching ratios, we then obtain the CKM matrix elements $|V_{cd}|$, $|V_{cs}|$, $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$. We also check CKM unitarity, for the first time, using only lattice QCD as the theoretical input.

Semileptonic decays of $D$ mesons in three-flavor lattice QCD

We present the first three-flavor lattice QCD calculations for $D\to πlν$ and $D\to K lν$ semileptonic decays. Simulations are carried out using ensembles of unquenched gauge fields generated by the MILC collaboration. With an improved staggered action for light quarks, we are able to simulate at light quark masses down to 1/8 of the strange mass. Consequently, the systematic error from the chiral extrapolation is much smaller than in previous calculations with Wilson-type light quarks. Our results for the form factors at $q^2=0$ are $f_+^{D\toπ}(0)=0.64(3)(6)$ and $f_+^{D\to K}(0) = 0.73(3)(7)$, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic, added in quadrature. Combining our results with experimental branching ratios, we obtain the CKM matrix elements $|V_{cd}|=0.239(10)(24)(20)$ and $|V_{cs}|=0.969(39)(94)(24)$, where the last errors are from experimental uncertainties.

Topological susceptibility with the improved Asqtad action

Chiral perturbation theory predicts that in quantum chromodymamics light dynamical quarks suppress the topological (instanton) susceptibility. We investigate this suppression through direct numerical simulation using the Asqtad improved lattice fermion action. This action holds promise for carrying out nonperturbative simulations over a range of quark masses for which chiral perturbation theory is expected to converge. To test the effectiveness of the action in capturing instanton physics, we measure the topological susceptibility as a function of quark masses with 2+1 dynamical flavors. Our results, when extrapolated to zero lattice spacing, are consistent with predictions of leading order chiral perturbation theory. Included in our study is a comparison of three methods for analyzing the topological susceptibility: (1) the Boulder hypercubic blocking technique with the Boulder topological charge operator, (2) the more traditional Wilson cooling method with the twisted plaquette topological charge operator and (3) the improved cooling method of de Forcrand, Perez, and Stamatescu and their improved topological charge operator.

Topological susceptibility with the improved Asqtad action

As a test of the chiral properties of the improved Asqtad (staggered fermion) action, we have been measuring the topological susceptibility as a function of quark masses for 2 + 1 dynamical flavors. We report preliminary results, which show reasonable agreement with leading order chiral perturbation theory for lattice spacing less than 0.1 fm. The total topological charge, however, shows strong persistence over Monte Carlo time.

Zero temperature string breaking in lattice quantum chromodynamics

The separation of a heavy quark and antiquark pair leads to the formation of a tube of flux, or "string", which should break in the presence of light quark-antiquark pairs. This expected zero-temperature phenomenon has proven elusive in simulations of lattice QCD. We study mixing between the string state and the two-meson decay channel in QCD with two flavors of dynamical sea quarks. We confirm that mixing is weak and find that it decreases at level crossing. While our study does not show direct effects of internal quark loops, our results, combined with unitarity, give clear confirmation of string breaking.

f_B for Various Actions : Approaching the Continuum Limit with Dynamical Fermions

We present results for pseudoscalar decay constants of heavy-light mesons using both quenched and N_f = 2 dynamical fermion configurations. A variety of fermion actions is investigated : Wilson, nonperturbative clover, and fat-link clover. For heavy quarks the Fermilab formalism is applied. In the quenched approximation, results with the nonperturbatively improved clover action of the Alpha collaboration allow us to study the systematic error of the continuum extrapolation from the Wilson action. In addition, we use quenched configurations to explore the effects of fattening. The lessons from the quenched analyses are then applied to data with dynamical fermions, where both Wilson and fat-link clover actions have been used. This allows us to attempt a continuum extrapolation of the dynamical results.

Scaling tests of the improved Kogut-Susskind quark action

Improved lattice actions for Kogut-Susskind quarks have been shown to improve rotational symmetry and flavor symmetry. In this work we find improved scaling behavior of the rho and nucleon masses expressed in units of a length scale obtained from the static quark potential, and better behavior of the Dirac operator in instanton backgrounds.

Critical Behavior in Nt = 4 Staggered Fermion Thermodynamics

Quantum chromodynamics with two zero-mass flavors is expected to exhibit a phase transition with O(4) critical behavior. Fixing the universality class is important for phenomenology and for facilitating the extrapolation of simulation data to physical quark mass values. Other groups have reported results from lattice QCD simulations with dynamical staggered quarks at Nt = 4, which suggest a departure from the expected critical behavior. We have pushed simulations to the largest volumes and smallest quark mass to date. Strong discrepancies in critical exponents and the scaling equation of state persist.

Semileptonic Decays of Heavy Mesons with the Fat Clover Action

We are studying a variety of semileptonic decays of heavy-light mesons in an effort to improve the determination of the heavy-quark Standard-Model CKM matrix elements. Our fermion action is a novel, improved ``fat'' clover action that promises to reduce problems with exceptional configurations. Dynamical sea quarks are included in a mixed approach, i.e. we use staggered sea quarks and fat-clover valence quarks. Here we report preliminary results.

Update on the hadron spectrum with two flavors of staggered quarks

We present an update on the MILC Collaboration's light hadron spectrum calculation with two flavors of dynamical, staggered quarks. We present extrapolations of the nucleon to rho mass ratio to the continuum limit for fixed values of the pi to rho mass ratio including the physical one.

Heavy-Light Decay Constants from Wilson and Static Quarks

MILC collaboration results for \fB, \fBs, \fD, \fDs and their ratios are presented. These results are still preliminary, but the analysis is close to being completed. Sources of systematic error, both within the quenched approximation and from quenching itself, are estimated. We find, for example, $f_B=153\pm 10 {}^{+36}_{-13} {}^{+13}_{-0} MeV$, and $f_{B_s}/f_B = 1.10 \pm 0.02 {}^{+0.05}_{-0.03} {}^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$, where the errors are statistical, systematic (within the quenched approximation), and systematic (of quenching), respectively. The extrapolation to the continuum and the chiral extrapolation are the largest sources of error. Present central values are based on linear chiral extrapolations; a shift to quadratic extrapolations would raise $f_B$ by $\approx20$ MeV and make the error within the quenched approximation more symmetric.

B Mixing on the Lattice: $f_B$, $f_{B_s}$ and Related Quantities

The MILC collaboration computation of heavy-light decay constants is described. Results for $f_B$, $f_{B_s}$, $f_D$, $f_{D_s}$ and their ratios are presented. These results are still preliminary, but the analysis is close to being completed. Sources of systematic error, both within the quenched approximation and from quenching itself, are estimated, although the latter estimate is rather crude. A sample of our results is: $f_B=153 \pm 10 {}^{+36}_{-13} {}^{+13}_{-0} MeV$, $f_{B_s}/f_B = 1.10 \pm 0.02 {}^{+0.05}_{-0.03} {}^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$, and $f_{B}/f_{D_s} = 0.76 \pm 0.03 {}^{+0.07}_{-0.04} {}^{+0.02}_{-0.01}$, where the errors are statistical, systematic (within the quenched approximation), and systematic (of quenching), respectively. The largest source of error comes from the extrapolation to the continuum. The second largest source is the chiral extrapolation. At present, the central values are based on linear chiral extrapolations; a shift to quadratic extrapolations would for example raise $f_B$ by $\approx 20$ MeV and thereby make the error within the quenched approximation more symmetric.

Update on $f_B$

We describe the current status of the MILC collaboration computation of $f_B$, $f_{B_s}$, $f_D$, $f_{D_s}$ and their ratios. Progress over the past year includes: better statistics and plateaus at $β=6.52$ (quenched), $β=5.6$ ($N_F=2$) and $β=5.445$ ($N_F=2$), new runs with a wide range of dynamical quark masses at $β=5.5$ ($N_F=2$), an estimate of the systematic errors due to the chiral extrapolation, and an improved analysis which consistently takes into account both the correlations in the data at every stage and the systematic effects due to changing fitting ranges.
