Decay of negative muons bound in $^{27}$Al

We present the first measurement of the energy spectrum up to 70 MeV of electrons from the decay of negative muons after they become bound in $^{27}$Al atoms. The data were taken with the TWIST apparatus at TRIUMF. We find a muon lifetime of (864.6 $\pm$ 1.2) ns, in agreement with earlier measurements. The asymmetry of the decay spectrum is consistent with zero, indicating that the atomic capture has completely depolarised the muons. The measured momentum spectrum is in reasonable agreement with theoretical predictions at the higher energies, but differences around the peak of the spectrum indicate the need for \oalpha radiative corrections to the calculations. The present measurement is the most precise measurement of the decay spectrum of muons bound to any nucleus.

A GRB Follow-up System at the Xinglong Observatory and Detection of the High-Redshift GRB 060927

A gamma-ray burst (GRB) optical photometric follow-up system at the Xinglong Observatory of National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC) has been constructed. It uses the 0.8-m Tsinghua-NAOC Telescope (TNT) and the 1-m EST telescope, and can automatically respond to GRB Coordinates Network (GCN)alerts. Both telescopes slew relatively fast, being able to point to a new target field within about 1 min upon a request. Whenever available, the 2.16-m NAOC telescope is also used. In 2006, the system responded to 15 GRBs and detected seven early afterglows. In 2007, six GRBs have been detected among 18 follow-up observations. TNT observations of the second most distant GRB 060927 (z=5.5) are shown, which started as early as 91s after the GRB trigger. The afterglow was detected in the combined image of first 19x20s unfiltered exposures. This GRB follow-up system has joined the East-Asia GRB Follow-up Observation Network (EAFON).

Hydrogen in Ag-doped ZnO: theoretical calculations

Based on density functional theory calculations, we systematically investigate the behaviors of a H atom in Ag-doped ZnO, involving the preference sites, diffusion behaviors, the electronic structures and vibrational properties. We find that a H atom can migrate to the doped Ag to form a Ag-H complex by overcoming energy barriers of 0.3 - 1.0 eV. The lowest-energy site for H location is the bond center of a Ag-O in the basal plane. Moreover, H can migrate between this site and its equivalent sites with energy cost of less than 0.5 eV. In contrast, dissociation of such a Ag-H complex needs energy of about 1.1 - 1.3 eV. This implies that the Ag-H complexes can commonly exist in the Ag-doped ZnO, which have a negative effect on the desirable p-type carrier concentrations of Ag-doped ZnO. In addition, based on the frozen phonon calculation, the vibrational properties of ZnO with a Ag-H complex are predicted. Some new vibrational modes associated with the Ag-H complex present in the vibrational spectrum of the system.

Study of the decay K+ => pi+,nu,nubar in the momentum region 140<Ppi<199 MeV/c

Experiment E949 at Brookhaven National Laboratory has observed three new events consistent with the decay K+ => pi+,nu,nubar in the pion momentum region 140 < P_pi < 199 MeV/c in an exposure of 1.71e12 stopped kaons with an estimated total background of 0.93+-0.17(stat.)+0.32-0.24(syst.) events. This brings the total number of observed K+ => pi+,nu,nubar events to seven. Combining this observation with previous results, assuming the pion spectrum predicted by the standard model, results in a branching ratio of (1.73+1.15-1.05)e-10. An interpretation of the results for alternative models of the decay K^ => pi+,nothing is also presented.

A Precision Measurement of the Muon Decay Parameters $ρ$ and $δ$

The TWIST collaboration has performed new measurements of two of the parameters that describe muon decay: $ρ$, which governs the shape of the overall momentum spectrum, and $δ$, which governs the momentum dependence of the parity-violating decay asymmetry. This analysis gives the results $ρ=0.75014\pm 0.00017(\text{stat})\pm 0.00044(\text{syst})\pm 0.00011(η)$, where the last uncertainty arises from the correlation between $ρ$ and the decay parameter $η$, and $δ= 0.75067\pm 0.00030(\text{stat})\pm 0.00067(\text{syst})$. These are consistent with the value of 3/4 given for both parameters in the Standard Model of particle physics, and are a factor of two more precise than the measurements previously published by TWIST. A new global analysis of all available muon decay data incorporating these results is presented. Improved lower and upper limits on the decay parameter $P_μ^πξ$ of $0.99524 < P_μ^πξ\leq ξ< 1.00091$ at 90% confidence are determined, where $P_μ^π$ is the polarization of the muon when it is created during pion decay, and $ξ$ governs the muon decay asymmetry. These results set new model-independent constraints on the possible weak interactions of right-handed particles. Specific implications for left-right symmetric models are discussed.

Origin of the Non-Linear Pressure Effects in Perovskite Manganites: Buckling of Mn-O-Mn Bonds and Jahn-Teller Distortion of the MnO6 Octahedra Induced by Pressure

High-pressure resistivity and x-ray diffraction have been measured on La0.85MnO3-d. At low pressures the metal-insulator transition temperature (TMI) increases linearly with pressure up to a critical pressure, P* ~ 3.4 GPa, which is followed by reduction of TMI with increasing pressure. Analysis of the bond distances and bond angles reveal that a bandwidth increase drives the in-crease of TMI for pressure below P*. The reduction of TMI at higher pressures is found to result from Jahn-Teller distortions of the MnO6 octahedra. The role of anharmonic interatomic potential is discussed.

Thermal And Mechanical Analysis of High-power Light-emitting Diodes with Ceramic Packages

In this paper we present the thermal and mechanical analysis of high-power light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with ceramic packages. Transient thermal measurements and thermo-mechanical simulation were performed to study the thermal and mechanical characteristics of ceramic packages. Thermal resistance from the junction to the ambient was decreased from 76.1 oC/W to 45.3 oC/W by replacing plastic mould to ceramic mould for LED packages. Higher level of thermo-mechanical stresses in the chip were found for LEDs with ceramic packages despite of less mismatching coefficients of thermal expansion comparing with plastic packages. The results suggest that the thermal performance of LEDs can be improved by using ceramic packages, but the mounting process of the high power LEDs with ceramic packages is critically important and should be in charge of delaminating interface layers in the packages.

Candidate Milky Way Satellites in the Galactic Halo

Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR5 photometric data with $120^{\circ} < α< 270^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ} < δ< 70^{\circ}$ are searched for new Milky Way companions or substructures in the Galactic halo. Five candidates are identified as overdensities of faint stellar sources that have color-magnitude diagrams similar to those of known globular clusters or dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The distance to each candidate is estimated by fitting suitable stellar isochrones to the color-magnitude diagrams. Geometric properties and absolute magnitudes are roughly measured and used to determine whether the candidates are likely dwarf spheroidal galaxies, stellar clusters or tidal debris. SDSSJ1000+5730 and SDSSJ1329+2841 are likely faint dwarf galaxy candidates while SDSSJ0814+5105, SDSSJ0821+5608 and SDSSJ1058+2843 are likely extremely faint globular clusters. Follow-up study is needed to confirm these candidates.

Confirmation of a pi_1^0 Exotic Meson in the ηπ^0 System

The exclusive reaction $π^- p \to ηπ^0 n$, $η\to π^+ π^- π^0$ at 18 GeV$/c$ has been studied with a partial wave analysis on a sample of 23~492 $ηπ^0 n$ events from BNL experiment E852. A mass-dependent fit is consistent with a resonant hypothesis for the $P_+$ wave, thus providing evidence for a neutral exotic meson with $J^{PC} = 1^{-+}$, a mass of $1257 \pm 20 \pm 25$ MeV$/c^2$, and a width of $354 \pm 64 \pm 60$ MeV$/c^2$. New interpretations of the meson exotics in neutral $ηπ^0$ system observed in E852 and Crystal Barrel experiments are discussed.

Very early multi-color observations of the plateau phase of GRB 041006 afterglow

Observations of the optical afterglow of GRB 041006 with the Kiso Observatory 1.05 m Schmidt telescope, the Lulin Observatory 1.0 m telescope and the Xinglong Observatory 0.6 m telescope. Three-bands (B, V and R) of photometric data points were obtained on 2004 October 6, 0.025-0.329 days after the burst. These very early multi band light curves imply the existence of a color dependent plateau phase. The B-band light curve shows a clear plateau at around 0.03 days after the burst. The R band light curve shows the hint of a plateau, or a possible slope change, at around 0.1 days after the burst. The overall behavior of these multi-band light curves may be interpreted in terms of the sum of two separate components, one showing a monotonic decay the other exhibiting a rising and a falling phase, as described by the standard afterglow model.

Measurement of P_{mu}xi in Polarized Muon Decay

The quantity P_{mu}^{pi}xi, where xi is one of the muon decay parameters and $P_μ^π$ is the degree of muon polarization in pion decay, has been measured. The value P_{mu}^{pi}xi = 1.0003 +- 0.0006 stat. +- 0.0038 syst. was obtained. This result agrees with previous measurements but is over a factor of two more precise. It also agrees with the Standard Model prediction for P_{mu}^{pi}xi and thus leads to restrictions on left-right symmetric models.

Time expansion chamber system for characterization of TWIST low energy muon beams

A low mass time expansion chamber (TEC) has been developed to measure distributions of position and angle of the TRIUMF low energy surface muon beam used for the TWIST experiment. The experiment is a high precision measurement of muon decay and is dominated by systematic uncertainties, including the stability, reproducibility, and characterization of the beam. The distributions measured by two TEC modules are one essential ingredient of an accurate simulation of TWIST. The uncertainties, which are extracted through comparisons of data and simulation, must be known to assess potential systematic uncertainties of the TWIST results. The design criteria, construction, alignment, calibration, and operation of the TEC system are discussed, including experiences from initial beam studies. A brief description of the use of TEC data in the TWIST simulation is also included.

Measurement of the Muon Decay Parameter delta

The muon decay parameter delta has been measured by the TWIST collaboration. We find delta = 0.74964 +- 0.00066(stat.) +- 0.00112(syst.), consistent with the Standard Model value of 3/4. This result implies that the product Pmuxi of the muon polarization in pion decay, Pmu, and the muon decay parameter xi falls within the 90% confidence interval 0.9960 < Pmuxi < xi < 1.0040. It also has implications for left-right-symmetric and other extensions of the Standard Model.

Distance Determination of Variable Galactic Sources

We have developed a timing analysis method to determine the distances of variable galactic X-ray sources based on the method advanced by Trümper and Schönfelder in 1973. The light-curve of the halo produced by the scattering of X-rays off the interstellar dust is delayed and smeared by the dust grains. This method utilizes the differences between the power density spectra of the point source and the halo. We present the details of this method and our first applications of this method to the Chandra data of X-ray binary Cyg X-3.

Optical and radio variability of the BL Lac object AO 0235+16: a possible 5-6 year periodicity

New optical and radio data on the BL Lacertae object AO 0235+16 have been collected in the last four years by a wide international collaboration, which confirm the intense activity of this source. The optical data also include the results of the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) first-light campaign organized in November 1997. The optical spectrum is observed to basically steepen when the source gets fainter. We have investigated the existence of typical variability time scales and of possible correlations between the optical and radio emissions by means of visual inspection, Discrete Correlation Function analysis, and Discrete Fourier Transform technique. The major radio outbursts are found to repeat quasi-regularly with a periodicity of about 5.7 years; this period is also in agreement with the occurrence of some of the major optical outbursts, but not all of them.

Short-time critical dynamics and universality on a two-dimensional Triangular Lattice

Critical scaling and universality in short-time dynamics for spin models on a two-dimensional triangular lattice are investigated by using Monte Carlo simulation. Emphasis is placed on the dynamic evolution from fully ordered initialstates to show that universal scaling exists already in the short-time regime in form of power-law behavior of the magnetization and Binder cumulant. The results measured for the dynamic and static critical exponents, $θ$, $z$, $β$ and $ν$, confirm explicitly that the Potts models on the triangular lattice and square lattice belong to the same universality class. Our critical scaling analysis strongly suggests that the simulation for the dynamic relaxation can be used to determine numerically the universality.

ROSAC: Studying the clustering properties of X-ray selected AGNs

We present the first ROSAC results of an AGN clustering analysis. This study comprises a sample of 200 AGNs, 75% of which being at low redshifts z<0.5, in the Ursa Major constellation. The spatial 2-point-correlation function (SCF) as well as the minimal spanning tree (MST) technique were applied. Some evidence for clustering is found in the SCF, although with low significance. Using the MST technique, we could find two AGN groups. This result is preliminary and the exact significance will be tested with careful simulations.

Large-scale structures in the distribution of X-ray selected AGN

We are searching for large-scale structures in the distribution of AGN discovered by the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. The RASS detected > 60000 X-ray objects, of which approximately 35% are AGN at z < 0.5. The surface density in the extragalactic sky is approximately 0.5 AGN/deg^2, which has not been reached until now by any other survey for this redshift range. We efficiently single out the AGN among all the RASS sources using the Hamburg/RASS database of optical identifications, which contains presently 13867 entries. Follow-up spectroscopy of RASS AGN candidates identified in selected areas of the northern sky is underway to determine the spatial distribution of the AGN in these areas. In every area structures reminiscent of clusters and filaments are found on scales 50 - 100 h^{-1}Mpc. These structures have a similar size as the serendipitously discovered groups of AGN in optical surveys at higher redshifts. Samples of low redshift AGN drawn from the RASS are large enough to be used with samples of higher redshift to study evolutionary effects in the large-scale distribution of AGN.
