First Detection of Photons with Energy Beyond 100 TeV from an Astrophysical Source

We report on the highest energy photons from the Crab Nebula observed by the Tibet air shower array with the underground water-Cherenkov-type muon detector array. Based on the criterion of muon number measured in an air shower, we successfully suppress 99.92% of the cosmic-ray background events with energies $E>100$ TeV. As a result, we observed 24 photon-like events with $E>100$ TeV against 5.5 background events, which corresponds to 5.6$σ$ statistical significance. This is the first detection of photons with $E>100$ TeV from an astrophysical source.

Study of Alfven Eigenmodes stability in plasma with multiple NBI driven energetic particle specie

The aim of this study is to analyze the destabilization of Alfven Eigenmodes (AE) by multiple energetic particles (EP) species in DIII-D and LHD discharges. We use the reduced MHD equations to describe the linear evolution of the poloidal flux and the toroidal component of the vorticity in a full 3D system, coupled with equations of density and parallel velocity moments for the energetic particles species, including the effect of the acoustic modes, diamagnetic currents and helical couplings. We add the Landau damping and resonant destabilization effects using a closure relation. The simulations with multiple NBI lines show three different regimes: the non damped regime where the multi beam AEs growth rate is larger compared to the growth rate of the AEs destabilized by the individual NBI lines, the interaction regime where the multi beam AEs growth rate is smaller than the single NBI AEs and the damped regime where the AEs are suppressed. Operations in the damped regime requires EP species with different density profile flatness or gradient locations. In addition, the AEs growth rate in the interaction regime is further reduced if the combined NBI lines have similar beam temperatures and the beta of the NBI line with flatter EP density profile increases. Then, optimization trends are identified in DIII-D high poloidal beta and LHD low density / magnetic field discharges with multiple NBI lines as well as the configuration requirements to operate in the damped and interaction regimes. DIII-D simulations show a decrease of the n=2 to 6 AEs growth rate and n=1 AE are stabilized in the LHD case. The helical coupling effects in LHD simulations lead to a transition from the interaction to the damped regime of the n=2,-8,12 helical family.

Measurement of the single-spin asymmetry $A_y^0$ in quasi-elastic $^3$He$^\uparrow$($e,e'n$) scattering at $0.4 < Q^2 < 1.0$ GeV$/c^2$

Due to the lack of free neutron targets, studies of the structure of the neutron are typically made by scattering electrons from either $^2$H or $^3$He targets. In order to extract useful neutron information from a $^3$He target, one must understand how the neutron in a $^3$He system differs from a free neutron by taking into account nuclear effects such as final state interactions and meson exchange currents. The target single spin asymmetry $A_y^0$ is an ideal probe of such effects, as any deviation from zero indicates effects beyond plane wave impulse approximation. New measurements of the target single spin asymmetry $A_y^0$ at $Q^2$ of 0.46 and 0.96 (GeV/$c)^2$ were made at Jefferson Lab using the quasi-elastic $^3\mathrm{He}^{\uparrow}(e,e'n)$ reaction. Our measured asymmetry decreases rapidly, from $>20\%$ at $Q^2=0.46$ (GeV/$c)^2$ to nearly zero at $Q^2=0.96$ (GeV$/c)^2$, demonstrating the fall-off of the reaction mechanism effects as $Q^2$ increases. We also observed a small $ε$-dependent increase in $A_y^0$ compared to previous measurements, particularly at moderate $Q^2$. This indicates that upcoming high $Q^2$ measurements from the Jefferson Lab 12 GeV program can cleanly probe neutron structure from polarized $^3$He using plane wave impulse approximation.

Measurement of charm and bottom production from semileptonic hadron decays in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV

Measurements of the differential production of electrons from open-heavy-flavor hadrons with charm- and bottom-quark content in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV are presented. The measurements proceed through displaced-vertex analyses of electron tracks from the semileptonic decay of charm and bottom hadrons using the PHENIX silicon-vertex detector. The relative contribution of electrons from bottom decays to inclusive heavy-flavor-electron production is found to be consistent with fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log perturbative-QCD calculations within experimental and theoretical uncertainties. These new measurements in $p$$+$$p$ collisions provide a precision baseline for comparable forthcoming measurements in A$+$A collisions.

Nonperturbative transverse momentum broadening in dihadron angular correlations in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV proton-nucleus collisions

The PHENIX collaboration has measured high-$p_T$ dihadron correlations in $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Al, and $p$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. The correlations arise from inter- and intra-jet correlations and thus have sensitivity to nonperturbative effects in both the initial and final states. The distributions of $p_{\rm out}$, the transverse momentum component of the associated hadron perpendicular to the trigger hadron, are sensitive to initial and final state transverse momenta. These distributions are measured multi-differentially as a function of $x_E$, the longitudinal momentum fraction of the associated hadron with respect to the trigger hadron. The near-side $p_{\rm out}$ widths, sensitive to fragmentation transverse momentum, show no significant broadening between $p$$+$Au, $p$$+$Al, and $p$$+$$p$. The away-side nonperturbative $p_{\rm out}$ widths are found to be broadened in $p$$+$Au when compared to $p$$+$$p$; however, there is no significant broadening in $p$$+$Al compared to $p$$+$$p$ collisions. The data also suggest that the away-side $p_{\rm out}$ broadening is a function of $N_{\rm coll}$, the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, in the interaction. The potential implications of these results with regard to initial and final state transverse momentum broadening and energy loss of partons in a nucleus, among other nuclear effects, are discussed.

Measurements of $μμ$ pairs from open heavy flavor and Drell-Yan in $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV

PHENIX reports differential cross sections of $μμ$ pairs from semileptonic heavy-flavor decays and the Drell-Yan production mechanism measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV at forward and backward rapidity ($1.2<|η|<2.2$). The $μμ$ pairs from $c\bar{c}$, $b\bar{b}$, and Drell-Yan are separated using a template fit to unlike- and like-sign muon pair spectra in mass and $p_T$. The azimuthal opening angle correlation between the muons from $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$ decays and the pair-$p_T$ distributions are compared to distributions generated using {\sc pythia} and {\sc powheg} models, which both include next-to-leading order processes. The measured distributions for pairs from $c\bar{c}$ are consistent with {\sc pythia} calculations. The $c\bar{c}$ data presents narrower azimuthal correlations and softer $p_T$ distributions compared to distributions generated from {\sc powheg}. The $b\bar{b}$ data are well described by both models. The extrapolated total cross section for bottom production is $3.75{\pm}0.24({\rm stat}){\pm}^{0.35}_{0.50}({\rm syst}){\pm}0.45({\rm global})$[$μ$b], which is consistent with previous measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in the same system at the same collision energy, and is approximately a factor of two higher than the central value calculated with theoretical models. The measured Drell-Yan cross section is in good agreement with next-to-leading-order quantum-chromodynamics calculations.

A systematic TMRT observational study of Galactic $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratios from Formaldehyde

We present observations of the C-band $1_{10}-1_{11}$ (4.8 GHz) and Ku-band $2_{11}-2_{12}$ (14.5 GHz) K-doublet lines of H$_2$CO and the C-band $1_{10}-1_{11}$ (4.6 GHz) line of H$_2$$^{13}$CO toward a large sample of Galactic molecular clouds, through the Shanghai Tianma 65-m radio telescope (TMRT). Our sample with 112 sources includes strong H$_2$CO sources from the TMRT molecular line survey at C-band and other known H$_2$CO sources. All three lines are detected toward 38 objects (43 radial velocity components) yielding a detection rate of 34\%. Complementary observations of their continuum emission at both C- and Ku-bands were performed. Combining spectral line parameters and continuum data, we calculate the column densities, the optical depths and the isotope ratio H$_2$$^{12}$CO/H$_2$$^{13}$CO for each source. To evaluate photon trapping caused by sometimes significant opacities in the main isotopologue's rotational mm-wave lines connecting our measured K-doublets, and to obtain $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C abundance ratios, we used the RADEX non-LTE model accounting for radiative transfer effects. This implied the use of the new collision rates from \citet{Wiesenfeld2013}. Also implementing distance values from trigonometric parallax measurements for our sources, we obtain a linear fit of $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C = (5.08$\pm$1.10)D$_{GC}$ + (11.86$\pm$6.60), with a correlation coefficient of 0.58. D$_{GC}$ refers to Galactocentric distances. Our $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratios agree very well with the ones deduced from CN and C$^{18}$O but are lower than those previously reported on the basis of H$_2$CO, tending to suggest that the bulk of the H$_2$CO in our sources was formed on dust grain mantles and not in the gas phase.

Good orientations of 2T-graphs

In this paper we study graphs which admit acyclic orientations that contain a pair of arc-disjoint out-branching and in-branching (such an orientation is called good) and we focus on edge-minimal such graphs. A 2T-graph is a graph whose edge set can be decomposed into two edge-disjoint spanning trees. Vertex-minimal 2T-graphs with at least two vertices which are known as generic circuits play an important role in rigidity theory for graphs. We prove that every generic circuit has a good orientation. Using this result we prove that if $G$ is 2T-graph whose vertex set has a partition $V_1,V_2,\ldots{},V_k$ so that each $V_i$ induces a generic circuit $G_i$ of $G$ and the set of edges between different $G_i$'s form a matching in $G$, then $G$ has a good orientation. We also obtain a characterization for the case when the set of edges between different $G_i$'s form a double tree, that is, if we contract each $G_i$ to one vertex, and delete parallel edges we obtain a tree. All our proofs are constructive and imply polynomial algorithms for finding the desired good orderings and the pairs of arc-disjoint branchings which certify that the orderings are good. We also identify a structure which can be used to certify a 2T-graph which does not have a good orientation.

Interpolation between $L_0({\mathcal M},τ)$ and $L_\infty({\mathcal M},τ)$

Let ${\mathcal M}$ be a semifinite von Neumann algebra with a faithful semifinite normal trace $τ$. We show that the symmetrically $Δ$-normed operator space $E({\mathcal M},τ)$ corresponding to an arbitrary symmetrically $Δ$-normed function space $E(0,\infty)$ is an interpolation space between $L_0({\mathcal M},τ)$ and ${\mathcal M}$, which is in contrast with the classical result that there exist symmetric operator spaces $E({\mathcal M},τ)$ which are not interpolation spaces between $L_1({\mathcal M},τ)$ and ${\mathcal M}$. Besides, we show that the ${\mathcal K}$-functional of every $X\in L_0({\mathcal M},τ)+ {\mathcal M} $ coincides with the ${\mathcal K}$-functional of its generalized singular value function $μ(X)$. Several applications are given, e.g., it is shown that the pair $(L_0({\mathcal M},τ),{\mathcal M})$ is ${\mathcal K}$-monotone when ${\mathcal M}$ is a non-atomic finite factor.

Multi-particle azimuthal correlations for extracting event-by-event elliptic and triangular flow in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV

We present measurements of elliptic and triangular azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles detected at forward rapidity $1<|η|<3$ in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, as a function of centrality. The multiparticle cumulant technique is used to obtain the elliptic flow coefficients $v_2\{2\}$, $v_2\{4\}$, $v_2\{6\}$, and $v_2\{8\}$, and triangular flow coefficients $v_3\{2\}$ and $v_3\{4\}$. Using the small-variance limit, we estimate the mean and variance of the event-by-event $v_2$ distribution from $v_2\{2\}$ and $v_2\{4\}$. In a complementary analysis, we also use a folding procedure to study the distributions of $v_2$ and $v_3$ directly, extracting both the mean and variance. Implications for initial geometrical fluctuations and their translation into the final state momentum distributions are discussed.

Design and Beam Test Results for the sPHENIX Electromagnetic and Hadronic Calorimeter Prototypes

The super Pioneering High Energy Nuclear Interaction eXperiment (sPHENIX) at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) will perform high precision measurements of jets and heavy flavor observables for a wide selection of nuclear collision systems, elucidating the microscopic nature of strongly interacting matter ranging from nucleons to the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma. A prototype of the sPHENIX calorimeter system was tested at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility as experiment T-1044 in the spring of 2016. The electromagnetic calorimeter (EMCal) prototype is composed of scintillating fibers embedded in a mixture of tungsten powder and epoxy. The hadronic calorimeter (HCal) prototype is composed of tilted steel plates alternating with plastic scintillator. Results of the test beam reveal the energy resolution for electrons in the EMCal is $2.8\%\oplus~15.5\%/\sqrt{E}$ and the energy resolution for hadrons in the combined EMCal plus HCal system is $13.5\%\oplus 64.9\%/\sqrt{E}$. These results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed calorimeter system satisfies the sPHENIX specifications.

On the generation mechanism of electromagnetic cyclotron waves in the solar wind: statistical results from Wind observations

Electromagnetic cyclotron waves (ECWs) near the proton cyclotron frequency are frequently observed in the solar wind, yet their generation mechanism is still an open question. Based on the Wind data during the years 2005$-$2015, this paper carries out a statistical study on plasma characteristics associated with the occurrence of ECWs. The probability density distributions (PDDs) of proton temperature anisotropy ($T_\perp/T_\parallel$) and proton parallel beta ($β_\parallel$) are investigated, where $\perp$ and $\parallel$ refer to perpendicular and parallel to the background magnetic field, respectively. The PDDs depend on solar wind types as well as wave polarizations, and those for ECWs with left-handed (LH) polarization exhibit considerable differences from the PDDs for ambient solar winds. The distributions of occurrence rates of LH ECWs in ($β_\parallel$, $T_\perp/T_\parallel$) space show a tendency that the occurrence rates increase with proton temperature anisotropies. The $β_\parallel$ with maximum of occurrence rates is near 0.1 when $T_\perp/T_\parallel > 1$ while it is around 1 when $T_\perp/T_\parallel < 1$. The presence of alpha$-$proton differential flow with large kinetic energy corresponds to a much high occurrence rate as well as the domination of LH polarization of ECWs. Based on these observations and existing theories, we propose that the proton cyclotron and parallel firehose instabilities with effects of alpha$-$proton differential flow are likely responsible for the local generation of LH ECWs in the solar wind. The generation mechanism of right-handed ECWs seems to be complicated and more discussions are needed in future researches.

Nonperturbative transverse-momentum-dependent effects in dihadron and direct photon-hadron angular correlations in $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV

Dihadron and isolated direct photon-hadron angular correlations are measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV. The correlations are sensitive to nonperturbative initial-state and final-state transverse momentum $k_T$ and $j_T$ in the azimuthal nearly back-to-back region $Δϕ\simπ$. In this region, transverse-momentum-dependent evolution can be studied when several different hard scales are measured. To have sensitivity to small transverse momentum scales, nonperturbative momentum widths of $p_{\rm out}$, the out-of-plane transverse momentum component perpendicular to the trigger particle, are measured. These widths are used to investigate possible effects from transverse-momentum-dependent factorization breaking. When accounting for the longitudinal momentum fraction of the away-side hadron with respect to the near-side trigger particle, the widths are found to increase with the hard scale; this is qualitatively similar to the observed behavior in Drell-Yan and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering interactions. The momentum widths are also studied as a function of center-of-mass energy by comparing to previous measurements at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV. The nonperturbative jet widths also appear to increase with $\sqrt{s}$ at a similar $x_T$, which is qualitatively consistent to similar measurements in Drell-Yan interactions. To quantify the magnitude of any transverse-momentum-dependent factorization breaking effects, calculations will need to be performed to compare to these measurements.

PAHs as tracers of the molecular gas in star-forming galaxies

[Abridged] We combine new CO(1-0) line observations of 24 intermediate redshift galaxies (0.03 < z < 0.28) along with literature data of galaxies at 0<z<4 to explore scaling relations between the dust and gas content using PAH 6.2 $μ$m ($L_{6.2}$), CO ($L'_{\rm CO}$), and infrared ($L_{\rm IR}$) luminosities for a wide range of redshifts and physical environments. Our analysis confirms the existence of a universal $L_{6.2}-L_{\rm CO}$ correlation followed by normal star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and starbursts (SBs) at all redshifts. This relation is also followed by local ULIRGs that appear as outliers in the $L_{6.2}-L_{\rm IR}$ and $L_{\rm IR}-L'_{\rm CO}$ relations from the sequence defined by normal SFGs. The emerging tight ($σ\approx 0.26$ dex) and linear ($α= 1.03$) relation between $L_{6.2}$ and $L_{\rm CO}$ indicates a $L_{6.2}$ to molecular gas ($M_{\rm H_2}$) conversion factor of $α_{6.2} = M_{\rm H2}/L_{6.2} = (2.7\pm1.3) \times α_{\rm CO}$, where $α_{\rm CO}$ is the $L'_{\rm CO}$ to $M_{\rm H_2}$ conversion factor. We also find that on galaxy integrated scales, PAH emission is better correlated with cold rather than with warm dust emission, suggesting that PAHs are associated with the diffuse cold dust, which is another proxy for $M_{\rm H_2}$. Focusing on normal SFGs among our sample, we employ the dust continuum emission to derive $M_{\rm H_2}$ estimates and find a constant $M_{\rm H_2}/L_{6.2}$ ratio of $α_{6.2} = 12.3 \ M_{\rm H_2}/{\rm L}_{\odot}$ ($σ\approx 0.3$ dex). We propose that the presented $L_{6.2}-L'_{\rm CO}$ and $L_{6.2}-M_{\rm H_2}$ relations will serve as useful tools for the determination of the physical properties of high-$z$ SFGs, for which PAH emission will be routinely detected by the James Webb Space Telescope.

Technical Supplement to "Polarization Transfer Observables in Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering at Q$^2$ = 2.5, 5.2, 6.8, and 8.5 GeV$^2$"

The GEp-III and GEp-2$γ$ experiments, carried out in Jefferson Lab's Hall C from 2007-2008, consisted of measurements of polarization transfer in elastic electron-proton scattering at momentum transfers of $Q^2 = 2.5, 5.2, 6.8,$ and $8.54$ GeV$^2$. These measurements were carried out to improve knowledge of the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio $R = μ_p G_E^p/G_M^p$ at large values of $Q^2$ and to search for effects beyond the Born approximation in polarization transfer observables at $Q^2 = 2.5$ GeV$^2$. The final results of both experiments were reported in a recent archival publication. A full reanalysis of the data from both experiments was carried out in order to reduce the systematic and, for the GEp-2$γ$ experiment, statistical uncertainties. This technical note provides additional details of the final analysis omitted from the main publication, including the final evaluation of the systematic uncertainties.

Polarization Transfer Observables in Elastic Electron Proton Scattering at $Q^2 = $2.5, 5.2, 6.8, and 8.5 GeV$^2$

The GEp-III and GEp-2$γ$ experiments were carried out in Jefferson Lab's (JLab's) Hall C from 2007-2008, to extend the knowledge of $G_E^p/G_M^p$ to the highest practically achievable $Q^2$ and to search for effects beyond the Born approximation in polarization transfer observables of elastic $\vec{e}p$ scattering. This article reports an expanded description of the common experimental apparatus and data analysis procedure, and the results of a final reanalysis of the data from both experiments, including the previously unpublished results of the full-acceptance data of the GEp-2$γ$ experiment. The Hall C High Momentum Spectrometer detected and measured the polarization of protons recoiling elastically from collisions of JLab's polarized electron beam with a liquid hydrogen target. A large-acceptance electromagnetic calorimeter detected the elastically scattered electrons in coincidence to suppress inelastic backgrounds. The final GEp-III data are largely unchanged relative to the originally published results. The statistical uncertainties of the final GEp-2$γ$ data are significantly reduced at $ε= 0.632$ and $0.783$ relative to the original publication. The decrease with $Q^2$ of $G_E^p/G_M^p$ continues to $Q^2 = 8.5$ GeV$^2$, but at a slowing rate relative to the approximately linear decrease observed in earlier Hall A measurements. At $Q^2 = 2.5$ GeV$^2$, the proton form factor ratio $G_E^p/G_M^p$ shows no statistically significant $ε$-dependence, as expected in the Born approximation. The ratio $P_\ell/P_\ell^{Born}$ of the longitudinal polarization transfer component to its Born value shows an enhancement of roughly 1.4\% at $ε= 0.783$ relative to $ε= 0.149$, with $\approx 1.9σ$ significance based on the total uncertainty, implying a similar effect in the transverse component $P_t$ that cancels in the ratio $R$.

Supramolecular transmission of soliton-encoded bit streams over astronomical distances

A stream of optical pulses, transmitted over long distances in optical fiber, will be affected by a variety of noise sources, leading to degradation in the signal-to-noise ratio. This noise accumulation sets generic capacity limits of all fiber-based optical signal transmission systems and has long been regarded as unavoidable. We report that by tailoring long-range, non-covalent inter-pulse interactions, optical solitons in a fiber laser loop can robustly couple to each other and self-assemble into supramolecular structures that exhibit long-term stability, elementary diversity and the possibility of information encoding. We demonstrate error-free transmission of such self-assembled solitonic structures over many astronomical units without any active retiming, opening up the possibility of using bit-bit interactions to overcome noise accumulation in optical fiber telecommunications and bit-storage systems.

Non-covalent bonds between optical solitons in an optoacoustically mode-locked fiber laser: Analysis & modelling

Binding of particles through weak (non-covalent) interactions plays a central role in multiple modern disciplines, from Cooper pairing of electrons in superconductivity to formation of supramolecules in biochemistry. Optical solitons, which are analogous in many ways to particles, arise from a balance between nonlinearity and dispersion and have only been known to be able to form molecule-like, localized structures through covalent interactions due to direct overlapping. Non-covalent binding of optical solitons that based on long-rang interactions have, however, so far escaped experimental observations. Long-range interactions between optical solitons have proven almost impossible to control, generally leading to disorder. In this paper, however we show that by tailoring weak, long-range soliton interactions, a large population of optical solitons in an optoacoustic mode-locking fiber laser can assemble into stable, highly-ordered structures that resemble biochemical supramolecules. We demonstrate here a theoretical model of the non-covalent binding mechanism, and provide some experimental results supporting this model.
