Charmonium suppression in heavy-ion collisions

Data and their interpretations are reviewed for $J/ψ$ and $ψ^{\prime}$ production in heavy ion collisions with particular emphasis on the recently reported discontinuity in $Pb$-$Pb$ reactions. The experimental set-up is described and the various results for $J/ψ$ and $ψ^{\prime}$ suppressions including their $p_T$-dependence are presented. The suppressions in $pA$ collisions are discussed in terms of final state absorption of a premeson and the $p_T$ distributions as parton scattering in the initial state. Both phenomena scale with the trajectory length $L$. The data for charmonium suppression and $< p_T^2 >$ in heavy ion collisions are presented as a function of $L$ and discussed in the light of theories assuming deconfined matter and/or absorption by comovers.

Transport theory with self-consistent confinement related to the lattice data

The space-time development of a quark-gluon plasma is calculated from a Vlasov equation for the distribution function of quasiparticles with medium dependent masses. At each space-time point the masses are calculated selfconsistently from a gap equation, whose form is determined by the requirement that in thermal equilibrium and for a range of temperatures the energy density of the quasi-particle system is identical to the one from lattice calculations . The numerical solutions of the Vlasov equation display confinement. Relations to effective theories like that by Friedberg Lee and Nambu Jona-Lasinio are established.
