Controlling the effective mass of quantum well states in Pb/Si(111) by interface engineering

The in-plane effective mass of quantum well states in thin Pb films on a Bi reconstructed Si(111) surface is studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. It is found that this effective mass is a factor of three lower than the unusually high values reported for Pb films grown on a Pb reconstructed Si(111) surface. Through a quantitative low-energy electron diffraction analysis the change in effective mass as a function of coverage and for the different interfaces is linked to a change of around 2% in the in-plane lattice constant. To corroborate this correlation, density functional theory calculations were performed on freestanding Pb slabs with different in-plane lattice constants. These calculations show an anomalous dependence of the effective mass on the lattice constant including a change of sign for values close to the lattice constant of Si(111). This unexpected relation is due to a combination of reduced orbital overlap of the 6p_z states and altered hybridization between the 6p_z and 6p_xy derived quantum well states. Furthermore it is shown by core level spectroscopy that the Pb films are structurally and temporally stable at temperatures below 100 K.

The Structural Influence on the Rashba-type Spin-Splitting in Surface Alloys

The Bi/Ag(111), Pb/Ag(111), and Sb/Ag(111) surface alloys exhibit a two-dimensional band structure with a strongly enhanced Rashba-type spin-splitting, which is in part attributed to the structural asymmetry resulting from an outward relaxation of the alloy atoms. In order to gain further insight into the spin-splitting mechanism, we have experimentally determined the outward relaxation of the alloy atoms in these surface alloys using quantitative low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). The structure plays an important role in the size of the spinsplitting as it dictates the potential landscape, the symmetry as well as the orbital character. Furthermore, we discuss the band ordering of the Pb/Ag(111) surface alloy as well as the reproducible formation of Sb/Ag(111) surface alloys with unfaulted (face-centered cubic) and faulted (hexagonally close-packed) toplayer stacking.

Interference of spin states in photoemission from Sb/Ag(111)

Using a three-dimensional spin polarimeter we have gathered evidence for the interference of spin states in photoemission from the surface alloy Sb/Ag(111). This system features a small Rashba-type spin-splitting of a size comparable to the linewidth of the quasiparticles, thus causing an intrinsic overlap between states with orthogonal spinors. Besides a small spin polarization caused by the spin-splitting, we observe a large spin polarization component in the plane normal to the quantization axis provided by the Rashba effect. Strongly suggestive of coherent spin rotation, this effect is largely independent of the photon energy and photon polarization.

Unconventional Fermi surface spin textures in the Bi_xPb_{1-x}/Ag(111) surface alloy

The Fermi and Rashba energies of surface states in the Bi_xPb_{1-x}/Ag(111) alloy can be tuned simultaneously by changing the composition parameter x. We report on unconventional Fermi surface spin textures observed by spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy {that are correlated with a topological transition of the Fermi surface occurring at x=0.5. We show that the surface states remain fully spin polarized upon alloying and that the spin polarization vectors are approximately tangential to the constant energy contours. We discuss the implications of the topological transition for the transport of spin.
