Magnetoelectric coupling tuned by competing anisotropies in Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$TiO$_3$

A flop of electric polarization from $P$$\parallel$$c$ ($P_c$) to $P$$\parallel$$a$ ($P_a$) is observed in MnTiO$_3$ as a spin flop transition is triggered by a $c$-axis magnetic field, $H_{\|c}$=7 T. The critical magnetic field $H_{\|c}$ for $P_a$ is significantly reduced in Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$TiO$_3$ (x=0.33). $P_a$ and $P_c$ have been observed with both $H_{\|c}$ and $H_{\|a}$. Neutron diffraction measurements revealed similar magnetic arrangements for the two compositions where the ordered spins couple antiferromagnetically with their nearest intra- and inter-planar neighbors. In the x=0.33 system, the uniaxial and planar anisotropies of Mn$^{2+}$ and Ni$^{2+}$ compete and give rise to a spin reorientation transition at $T_R$. A magnetic field, $H_{\|c}$, aligns the spins along $c$ for $T_R$$<$$T$$<$$T_N$. The rotation of the collinear spins away from the $c$-axis for $T$$<$$T_R$ alters the magnetic point symmetry and gives rise to a new ME susceptibility tensor form. Such linear ME response provides satisfactory explanation for the behavior of the field-induced electric polarization in both compositions. As the Ni content increases to x=0.5 and 0.68, the ME effect disappears as a new magnetic phase emerges.

Successive magnetic phase transitions and multiferroicity in Spin-1 triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_3$NiNb$_2$O$_9$

We report the magnetic and electric properties of Ba$_3$NiNb$_2$O$_9$, which is a quasi-two-dimensional spin-1 triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) with trigonal structure. At low $T$ and with increasing magnetic field, the system evolves from a 120 degree magnetic ordering phase (A phase) to an up-up-down ($uud$) phase (B phase) with a change of slope at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization, and then to an "oblique" phase (C phase). Accordingly, the ferroelectricity switches on at each phase boundary with appearance of spontaneous polarization. Therefore, Ba$_3$NiNb$_2$O$_9$ is a unique TLAF exhibiting both $uud$ phase and multiferroicity.

Effect of a magnetic field on the quasiparticle recombination in superconductors

Quasiparticle recombination in a superconductor with an s-wave gap is typically dominated by a phonon bottleneck effect. We have studied how a magnetic field changes this recombination process in metallic thin-film superconductors, finding that the quasiparticle recombination process is significantly slowed as the field increases. While we observe this for all field orientations, we focus here on the results for a field applied parallel to the thin film surface, minimizing the influence of vortices. The magnetic field disrupts the time-reversal symmetry of the pairs, giving them a finite lifetime and decreasing the energy gap. The field could also polarize the quasiparticle spins, producing different populations of spin-up and spin-down quasiparticles. Both processes favor slower recombination; in our materials we conclude that strong spin-orbit scattering reduces the spin polarization, leaving the field-induced gap reduction as the dominant effect and accounting quantitatively for the observed recombination rate reduction.

Optical Self Energy in Graphene due to Correlations

In highly correlated systems one can define an optical self energy in analogy to its quasiparticle (QP) self energy counterpart. This quantity provides useful information on the nature of the excitations involved in inelastic scattering processes. Here we calculate the self energy of the intraband optical transitions in graphene originating in the electron-electron interaction (EEI) as well as electron-phonon interaction (EPI). Although optics involves an average over all momenta ($k$) of the charge carriers, the structure in the optical self energy is nevertheless found to mirror mainly that of the corresponding quasiparticles for $k$ equal to or near the Fermi momentum $k_F$. Consequently plasmaronic structures which are associated with momenta near the Dirac point at $k=0$ are not important in the intraband optical response. While the structure of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) reflects the sharp peaks of the phonon density of states, the excitation spectrum associated with the electron-electron interaction is in comparison structureless and flat and extends over an energy range which scales linearly with the value of the chemical potential. Modulations seen on the edge of the interband optical conductivity as it rises towards its universal background value are traced to structure in the quasiparticle self energies around $k_F$ of the lower Dirac cone associated with the occupied states.

Magneto-electric effect in NdCrTiO5

We have measured the dielectric constant and the pyroelectric current of orthorhombic (space group $Pbam$) NdCrTiO$_5$ polycrystalline samples. The dielectric constant and the pyroelectric current show features associated with ferroelectric transitions at the antiferromagnetic transition temperature ($T_{\text{N}}$ = 21 K). The effect of magnetic fields is to enhance the features almost linearly up to the maximum measured field (7 T) with a spontaneous polarization value of $\sim 3.5 μ$C/m$^2$. Two possible scenarios, the linear magnetoelectric effect and multiferroicity (antiferromagnetism + ferroelectricity), are discussed as possible explanations for the observations.

A search for non-virialized axionic dark matter

Cold dark matter in the Milky Way halo may have structure defined by flows with low velocity dispersion. The Axion Dark Matter eXperiment high resolution channel is especially sensitive to axions in such low velocity dispersion flows. Results from a combined power spectra analysis of the high resolution channel axion search are presented along with a discussion of the assumptions underlying such an analysis. We exclude KSVZ axion dark matter densities of ρ > 0.2 GeV/cm^3 and DFSZ densities of ρ > 1.4 GeV/cm^3 over a mass range of m_a = 3.3μeV to 3.69μeV for models having velocity dispersions of Δβ < 3x10^-6.

Ultrapure Multilayer Graphene in Bromine Intercalated Graphite

We investigate the optical properties of bromine intercalated highly orientated pyrolytic graphite (Br-HOPG) and provide a novel interpretation of the data. We observe new absorption features below 620 meV which are absent in the absorption spectrum of graphite. Comparing our results with those of theoretical studies on graphite, single and bilayer graphene as well as recent optical studies of multilayer graphene, we conclude that Br-HOPG contains the signatures of ultrapure bilayer, single layer graphene, and graphite. The observed supermetallic conductivity of Br-HOPG is identified with the presence of very high mobility (~ 121,000 cm2V-1s-1 at room temperature and at very high carrier density) multilayer graphene components in our sample. This could provide a new avenue for single and multilayer graphene research.

Doping and temperature-dependent optical properties of oxygen-reduced BaTiO3-d

We report on optical properties of reduced BaTiO3-d at different doping levels including insulating and metallic samples. In all the samples, including metallic one, we observe structural phase transitions from the changes in the infrared-active phonon modes. Metallic ground state is confirmed by the Drude-type lowfrequency optical reflectance. Similar to SrTiO3-d we find that the midinfrared-absorption band in BaTiO3-d appears and grows with an increase in the oxygen-vacancy concentration. Upon decrease in temperature from 300 K, the midinfrared band shifts slightly to higher frequency and evolves into two bands: the existing band and a new and smaller band at lower frequency. The appearance of the new and smaller band seems to be correlated with the structural phase transitions

Controlling the phase of a light beam with a single molecule

We employ heterodyne interferometry to investigate the effect of a single organic molecule on the phase of a propagating laser beam. We report on the first phase-contrast images of individual molecules and demonstrate a single-molecule electro-optical phase switch by applying a voltage to the microelectrodes embedded in the sample. Our results may find applications in single-molecule holography, fast optical coherent signal processing, and single-emitter quantum operations.

In-situ measurements of the optical absorption of dioxythiophene-based conjugated polymers

Conjugated polymers can be reversibly doped by electrochemical means. This doping introduces new sub-bandgap optical absorption bands in the polymer while decreasing the bandgap absorption. To study this behavior, we have prepared an electrochemical cell allowing measurements of the optical properties of the polymer. The cell consists of a thin polymer film deposited on gold-coated Mylar behind which is another polymer that serves as a counterelectrode. An infrared transparent window protects the upper polymer from ambient air. By adding a gel electrolyte and making electrical connections to the polymer-on-gold films, one may study electrochromism in a wide spectral range. As the cell voltage (the potential difference between the two electrodes) changes, the doping level of the conjugated polymer films is changed reversibly. Our experiments address electrochromism in poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxy-thiophene) (PEDOT) and poly(3,4-dimethyl-propylene-dioxy-thiophene) (PProDOT-Me$_2$). This closed electrochemical cell allows the study of the doping induced sub-bandgap features (polaronic and bipolaronic modes) in these easily oxidized and highly redox switchable polymers. We also study the changes in cell spectra as a function of polymer thickness and investigate strategies to obtain cleaner spectra, minimizing the contributions of water and gel electrolyte features.

Far-Infrared Conductivity Measurements of Pair Breaking in Superconducting Nb$_{0.5}$Ti$_{0.5}$N Thin Films Induced by an External Magnetic Field

We report the complex optical conductivity of a superconducting thin-film of Nb$_{0.5}$Ti$_{0.5}$N in an external magnetic field. The field was applied parallel to the film surface and the conductivity extracted from far-infrared transmission and reflection measurements. The real part shows the superconducting gap, which we observe to be suppressed by the applied magnetic field. We compare our results with the pair-breaking theory of Abrikosov and Gor'kov and confirm directly the theory's validity for the optical conductivity.

The derived moduli space of stable sheaves

We construct the derived scheme of stable sheaves on a smooth projective variety via derived moduli of finite graded modules over a graded ring. We do this by dividing the derived scheme of actions of Ciocan-Fontanine and Kapranov by a suitable algebraic gauge group. We show that the natural notion of GIT-stability for graded modules reproduces stability for sheaves.

A SQUID-based microwave cavity search for dark-matter axions

Axions in the micro eV mass range are a plausible cold dark matter candidate and may be detected by their conversion into microwave photons in a resonant cavity immersed in a static magnetic field. The first result from such an axion search using a superconducting first-stage amplifier (SQUID) is reported. The SQUID amplifier, replacing a conventional GaAs field-effect transistor amplifier, successfully reached axion-photon coupling sensitivity in the band set by present axion models and sets the stage for a definitive axion search utilizing near quantum-limited SQUID amplifiers.

Supermetallic conductivity in bromine-intercalated graphite

Exposure of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite to bromine vapor gives rise to in-plane charge conductivities which increase monotonically with intercalation time toward values (for ~6 at% Br) that are significantly higher than Cu at temperatures down to 5 K. Magnetotransport, optical reflectivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm that the Br dopes the graphene sheets with holes while simultaneously increasing the interplanar separation. The increase of mobility (~ 5E4 cm^2/Vs at T=300 K) and resistance anisotropy together with the reduced diamagnetic susceptibility of the intercalated samples suggests that the observed supermetallic conductivity derives from a parallel combination of weakly-coupled hole-doped graphene sheets.

Aerogel Waveplates

Optical transmission measurements were made on 98% porosity silica aerogel samples under various degrees of uniaxial strain. Uniaxially compressed aerogels exhibit large birefringence, proportional to the amount of compression, up to the 15% strain studied. The birefringence is mostly reversible and reproducible through multiple compression-decompression cycles. Our study demonstrates that uniaxially strained high porosity aerogels can be used as tunable waveplates in a broad spectral range.

Spin Dynamics in Cuprates: Optical Conductivity of HgBa2CuO4

The electron-boson spectral density function I^2ChiOmega responsible for carrier scattering of the high temperature superconductor HgBa2CuO4 (Tc = 90 K) is calculated from new data on the optical scattering rate. A maximum entropy technique is used. Published data on HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8 (Tc = 130 K) are also inverted and these new results are put in the context of other known cases. All spectra (with two notable exceptions) show a peak at an energy (Omega_r) proportional to the superconducting transition temperature Omega_r ~= 6.3 kB.Tc. This charge channel relationship follows closely the magnetic resonance seen by polarized neutron scattering, Omega_r^{neutron} ~= 5.4 kB.Tc. The amplitudes of both peaks decrease strongly with increasing temperature. In some cases, the peak at Omega_r is weak and the spectrum can have additional maxima and a background extending up to several hundred meV.

Manifestation of pseudogap in ab-plane optical characteristics

A model in which a gap forms in the renormalized electronic density of state (DOS) with missing states recovered just above the pseudogap $Δ_{pg}$, is able to give a robust description of the striking, triangular like, peak seen in the real part of the optical self-energy of underdoped cuprates. We use this model to explore the effect of the pseudogap on the real part of the optical conductivity and on the partial sum rule associated with it. An important result is that the optical spectral weight redistributes over a much larger frequency window than it does in the DOS.

Fermi surface arcs and the infrared conductivity of underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.50}$

We reanalyze the data on the in-plane far infrared conductivity of underdoped orthoII YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.50}$ (YBCO$_{6.50}$) in terms of a model in which a pseudogap opens on part of the Fermi surface with the remaining ungaped piece proportional to the temperature. The motivation for our model comes from recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data in underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212), which have revealed the existence of arcs on the Fermi surface. We find the optical data to be consistent with arc formation. In addition we find some evidence that the electronic states lost below the pseudogap energy $Δ_{pg}$ are recovered in the energy region immediately above it at least for temperatures near $T_c$.
