Height Pairing on Higher Cycles and Mixed Hodge Structures II

To a pair of Bloch higher cycles that intersect properly and have complementary codimensions, we attach a mixed Hodge structure with some extra data (a framed mixed Hodge structure). Using this mixed Hodge structure, we define two different archimedean local height pairings. Both constructions generalize the biextension archimedean height attached to a pair of classical algebraic cycles homologous to zero. When applied to the polylogarithm variation of mixed Hodge structures, we recover both the single-valued polylogarithm of Bloch, Wigner et al. and the one defined by Brown. We also prove several salient properties of these heights, including various vanishing results.

Height Pairing on Higher Cycles and Mixed Hodge Structures

For a smooth, projective complex variety, we introduce several mixed Hodge structures associated to higher algebraic cycles. Most notably, we introduce a mixed Hodge structure for a pair of higher cycles which are in the refined normalized complex and intersect properly. In a special case, this mixed Hodge structure is an oriented biextension, and its height agrees with the higher archimedean height pairing introduced in a previous paper by the first two authors. We also compute a non-trivial example of this height given by Bloch-Wigner dilogarithm function. Finally we study the variation of mixed Hodge structures of Hodge-Tate type, and show that the height extends continuously to degenerate situations.

A comparison of positivity in complex and tropical toric geometry

Given a smooth complex toric variety we will compare real Lagerberg forms and currents on its tropicalization with invariant complex forms and currents on the toric variety. Our main result is a correspondence theorem which identifies the cone of invariant closed positive currents on the complex toric variety with closed positive currents on the tropicalization. In a subsequent paper, this correspondence will be used to develop a Bedford-Taylor theory of plurisubharmonic functions on the tropicalization.

Generalized holomorphic analytic torsion

We extend the holomorphic analytic torsion classes of Bismut and Köhler to arbitrary projective morphisms between smooth algebraic complex varieties. To this end, we propose an axiomatic definition and give a classification of the theories of generalized holomorphic analytic torsion classes for arbitrary projective morphisms.

Semipurity of tempered Deligne cohomology

In this paper we define the formal and tempered Deligne cohomology groups, that are obtained by applying the Deligne complex functor to the complexes of formal differential forms and tempered currents respectively. We then prove the existence of a duality between them, a vanishing theorem for the former and a semipurity property for the latter. The motivation of these results comes from the study of covariant arithmetic Chow groups. The semi-purity property of tempered Deligne cohomology implies, in particular, that several definitions of covariant arithmetic Chow groups agree for projective arithmetic varieties.

Singular Bott-Chern classes and the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for closed immersions

We study the singular Bott-Chern classes introduced by Bismut, Gillet and Soule. Singular Bott-Chern classes are the main ingredient to define direct images for closed immersions in arithmetic K-theory. In this paper we give an axiomatic definition of a theory of singular Bott-Chern classes, study their properties, and classify all possible theories of this kind. We identify the theory defined by Bismut, Gillet and Soule as the only one that satisfies the additional condition of being homogeneous. We include a proof of the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for closed immersions that generalizes a result of Bismut, Gillet and Soule and was already proved by Zha. This result can be combined with the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for submersions to extend this theorem to projective morphisms. As a byproduct of this study we obtain two results of independent interest. First, we prove a Poincare lemma for the complex of currents with fixed wave front set, and second we prove that certain direct images of Bott-Chern classes are closed.

On Goncharov's regulator and higher arithmetic Chow groups

In this paper we show that the regulator defined by Goncharov from higher algebraic Chow groups to Deligne-Beilinson cohomology agrees with Beilinson's regulator. We give a direct comparison of Goncharov's regulator to the construction given by Burgos and Feliu. As a consequence, we show that the higher arithmetic Chow groups defined by Goncharov agree, for all projective arithmetic varieties over an arithmetic field, with the ones defined by Burgos and Feliu.

Higher arithmetic Chow groups

We give a new construction of higher arithmetic Chow groups for quasi-projective arithmetic varieties over a field. Our definition agrees with the higher arithmetic Chow groups defined by Goncharov for projective arithmetic varieties over a field. These groups are the analogue, in the Arakelov context, of the higher algebraic Chow groups defined by Bloch. The degree zero group agrees with the arithmetic Chow groups of Burgos. Our new construction is shown to be a contravariant functor and is endowed with a product structure, which is commutative and associative.

Cohomological arithmetic Chow rings

We develop a theory of abstract arithmetic Chow rings where the role of the fibers at infinity is played by a complex of abelian groups that computes a suitable cohomology theory. This theory allows the construction of many variants of the arithmetic Chow groups with different properties. As particular cases of this formalism we recover the original arithmetic intersection theory of Gillet and Soulé for projective varieties, we introduce a theory of arithmetic Chow groups which are covariant with respect to arbitrary proper morphisms, and we develop a theory of arithmetic Chow rings using a complex of differential forms with log-log singularities along a fixed normal crossings divisor. This last theory is suitable for the study of automorphic line bundles. In particular, we generalize the classical Faltings height with respect to a logarithmically singular hermitian line bundle to higher dimensional cycles. As an application we compute the Faltings height of Hecke correspondences on a product of modular curves.

Arithmetic characteristic classes of automorphic vector bundles

We develop a theory of arithmetic characteristic classes of (fully decomposed) automorphic vector bundles equipped with an invariant hermitian metric. These characteristic classes have values in an arithmetic Chow ring constructed by means of differential forms with certain log-log type singularities. We first study the cohomological properties of log-log differential forms, prove a Poincaré lemma for them and construct the corresponding arithmetic Chow groups. Then we introduce the notion of log-singular hermitian vector bundles, which is a variant of the good hermitian vector bundles introduced by Mumford, and we develop the theory of arithmetic characteristic classes. Finally we prove that the hermitian metrics of automorphic vector bundles considered by Mumford are not only good but also log-singular. The theory presented here provides the theoretical background which is required in the formulation of the conjectures of Maillot-Roessler in the semi-abelian case and which is needed to extend Kudla's program about arithmetic intersections on Shimura varieties to the non compact case.
