In-plane magnetic field control of anomalous Hall response enabled by magnetic anisotropy engineering

Engineering magnetic anisotropy provides a powerful route to control magnetization orientation and unlock emerging functionalities in opto-spintronic and current-driven devices. Beyond its role in magnetization reversal, the effective anisotropy can strongly influence the magnetotransport response, offering an additional degree of freedom to tune new device functionalities. In this work, we report a magnetotransport study of a ferrimagnetic [Tb/Co]$_{\times 5}$ multilayer grown with a Tb thickness gradient, whose wedge-shaped tilts the uniaxial anisotropy axis slightly away from the film normal. Anomalous Hall resistivity measurements from 80 K to 300 K reveal a spin reorientation transition, while the angular dependence of the magnetotransport responses exposes the crucial role of the tilted anisotropy. A simplified macrospin model reproduces the full angular response across the transition and shows that the observed anomalous Hall effect when the in-plane magnetic field is applied originates from the tilt of the uniaxial anisotropy axis, which supplies a built-in symmetry-breaking mechanism, enabling in-plane field control over the out-of-plane anomalous Hall response, sign included. These findings establish tilted magnetic anisotropy as a promising route toward Hall effect-based sensor applications and highlight Tb/Co multilayers as a versatile platform for anisotropy-engineered spintronic devices.

Quantum oscillations reveal sixfold fermions in cubic $β$-PtBi$_2$

We report a study of de Haas-van Alphen oscillations in high-quality single crystals of cubic $β$-PtBi$_2$. In combination with density functional theory calculations, we identify quantum oscillations associated with all Fermi surface sheets predicted by theory. Our results uncover three small electron pockets centered on a sixfold band-touching point located approximately 25 meV below the Fermi level at the $R$ point of the Brillouin zone. These findings firmly establish the presence of sixfold fermions in close proximity to the Fermi energy of $β$-PtBi$_2$.

Orbital Complexity in Intrinsic Magnetic Topological Insulators MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$

Using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), we investigate the surface electronic structure of the magnetic van der Waals compounds MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$, the $n=$~1 and 2 members of a modular (Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$(MnBi$_2$Te$_4$) series, which have attracted recent interest as intrinsic magnetic topological insulators. Combining circular dichroic, spin-resolved and photon-energy-dependent ARPES measurements with calculations based on density functional theory, we unveil complex momentum-dependent orbital and spin textures in the surface electronic structure and disentangle topological from trivial surface bands. We find that the Dirac-cone dispersion of the topologial surface state is strongly perturbed by hybridization with valence-band states for Bi$_2$Te$_3$-terminated surfaces but remains preserved for MnBi$_2$Te$_4$-terminated surfaces. Our results firmly establish the topologically non-trivial nature of these magnetic van der Waals materials and indicate that the possibility of realizing a quantized anomalous Hall conductivity depends on surface termination.

Strongly anisotropic spin dynamics in magnetic topological insulators

The recent discovery of magnetic topological insulators has opened new avenues to explore exotic states of matter that can emerge from the interplay between topological electronic states and magnetic degrees of freedom, be it ordered or strongly fluctuating. Motivated by the effects that the dynamics of the magnetic moments can have on the topological surface states, we investigate the magnetic fluctuations across the (MnBi$_{\text{2}}$Te$_{\text{4}}$)(Bi$_{\text{2}}$Te$_{\text{3}}$)$_{\text{n}}$ family. Our paramagnetic electron spin resonance experiments reveal contrasting Mn spin dynamics in different compounds, which manifests in a strongly anisotropic Mn spin relaxation in MnBi$_{\text{2}}$Te$_{\text{4}}$ while being almost isotropic in MnBi$_{\text{4}}$Te$_{\text{7}}$. Our density-functional calculations explain these striking observations in terms of the sensitivity of the local electronic structure to the Mn spin-orientation, and indicate that the anisotropy of the magnetic fluctuations can be controlled by the carrier density, which may directly affect the electronic topological surface states.

Low-temperature physical properties of GdCoIn$_5$

A comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the low temperature properties of GdCoIn$_5$ was performed. Specific heat, thermal expansion, magnetization and electrical resistivity were measured in good quality single crystals down to $^4$He temperatures. All the experiments show a second-order-like phase transition at 30 K probably associated with the onset of antiferromagnetic order. Total energy GGA+U calculations indicate a ground state with magnetic moments localized at the Gd ions and allowed a determination of the Gd-Gd magnetic interactions. Band structure calculations of the electron and phonon contributions to the specific heat and Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the magnetic contributions to the thermodynamic quantities reproduce quite well the experimental data.
