Entropy-production fluctuation theorem for a generalized Langevin particle in crossed electric and magnetic fields

We study fluctuations of entropy production for a charged Brownian particle confined in a harmonic trap and driven out of equilibrium by crossed electric and magnetic fields. The magnetic field is constant and perpendicular to the plane of motion, while the electric field is time dependent and provides the driving. The non-Markovian dynamics is modeled by a generalized Langevin equation with memory and Gaussian noise. This setting represents a charged Brownian degree of freedom in a structured bath, where delayed friction modifies relaxation while the magnetic field couples the transverse coordinates. Using the exact solution of this linear dynamics, we obtain the time-dependent Gaussian phase-space probability density and from it compute the trajectory-dependent total entropy production. For two solvable driving protocols -- direct forcing by a prescribed time-dependent electric force and dragging of the harmonic trap center -- we prove analytically that the total entropy production obeys a detailed fluctuation theorem.

Non-Markovian entropy production fluctuation theorem driven by a time-dependent electric field

Fluctuation theorems are key to understanding both fundamental and applied aspects of non-equilibrium thermodynamics of small systems. We study the non-Markovian entropy production fluctuation theorem for the diffusion process of charged particles in a gas inside a harmonic potential and under the action of a time-dependent electric field, using a generalized Langevin equation. By considering the influence of the electric field on both the tagged Brownian particle and the bath particles, an "induced" electric force arises. Despite the additional force, we demonstrate that Kubo's second fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) remains unchanged. The FDT allows us to obtain the Gaussian probability density for the position along a single stochastic trajectory, which is the key to demonstrating the validity of the detailed fluctuation theorem (DFT) for the total entropy production. We study the specific result of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-type friction memory kernel and an oscillating electric field, and analyze the average work and entropy production in different parameter regimes.

Fundamental Klein-Gordon equation from stochastic mechanics in curved spacetime

This work presents an alternative approach to obtain the quantum field equations in curved spacetime, considering that sufficiently small particles follow stochastic trajectories around geodesic. Our proposal is based on a stochastic differential equation in which the noise term experienced by the quantum particles is a consequence of the stochastic background in spacetime. This fact allows the particles to describe erratic movements and locally the universe exhibits characteristics akin to a lake with gentle ripples rather than a flat unyielding surface. Building upon this foundational understanding, we investigate the influence of this background on quantum-scale particles without considering the metric to be stochastic, rather we let test particles move randomly around the geodesic of macroscopic particles. Their behavior aligns with solutions to the Klein-Gordon (KG) equation specific to this curved spacetime. As the KG equation, in its non-relativistic limit within a flat spacetime, reduces to the Schrödinger equation, consequently, we propose a compelling connection: the Schrödinger equation may emerge directly from a spacetime lacking local smoothness.

Performance at maximum figure of merit for a Brownian Carnot refrigerator

This paper focuses on the coefficient of performance (COP) at maximum figure of merit $χ$ for a Brownian Carnot-like refrigerator, within the context of symmetric Low-Dissipation approach. Our proposal is based on the Langevin equation for a Brownian particle bounded to a harmonic potential trap, which can perform Carnot-like cycles at finite time. We show that under quasistatic conditions the COP has the same expression as the macroscopic Carnot refrigerator. However, for irreversible cycles at finite time and under symmetric dissipation, the optimal COP is the counterpart of Curzon-Ahlborn efficiency for irreversible macroscopic refrigerators.

Electronic plasma diffusion with radiation reaction force and time-dependent electric field

In this work the explicit solution of the electronic plasma diffusion with radiation reaction force, under the action of an exponential decay external electric field is given. The electron dynamics is described by a classical generalized Langevin equation characterized by an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-type friction memory kernel, with an effective memory time which accounts for the effective thermal interaction between the electron and its surroundings (thermal collisions between electrons + radiation reaction force). The incident electric field exerts an electric force on the electron, which in turn can induce an additional damping to the braking radiation force, allowing a delay in the electron characteristic time. This fact allows that the effective memory time be finite and positive, and as a consequence, obtaining physically admissible solutions of the stochastic Abraham-Lorentz-like equation. It is shown that the diffusion process is quasi-Markovian which includes the radiation effects.

A forced thermal ratchet in a memory heat bath

The present work studies a non-Markovian forced thermal ratchet model on an asymmetric periodic potential. The Brownian dynamics is described by a generalized Langevin equation with an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-type friction memory kernel. We show that for the case of a time-dependent driving force, also in the form of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-like process, an exact expression of the probability current can be derived. We also obtain the behavior of the particle's average rate of flow as a function of the external amplitude force and of the bath temperature when the driving force behaves as a square wave modulation. All our results are compared with those obtained in the Markovian case and we find, fairly remarkably, that in some cases a friction memory kernel results in an enhancement of the current

Carnot, Stirling, Ericsson stochastic heat engines: Efficiency at maximum power

This work obtains the efficiency at maximum power for a stochastic heat engine performing Carnot-like, Stirling-like and Ericsson-like cycles. For the mesoscopic engine a Brownian particle trapped by an optical tweezers is considered. The dynamics of this stochastic engine is described as an overdamped Langevin equation with a harmonic potential, whereas is in contact with two thermal baths at different temperatures, namely, hot ($T_h$) and cold ($T_c$). The harmonic oscillator Langevin equation is transformed into a macroscopic equation associated with the mean value $\langle x^2(t)\rangle$ using the original Langevin approach. At equilibrium stationary state this quantity satisfies a state-like equation from which the thermodynamic properties are calculated. To obtained the efficiency at maximum power it is considered the finite-time cycle processes under the framework of low dissipation approach.
