Critical Points in the QCD Phase Diagram with Two Flavors of Quarks

We employ the linear sigma model to study the chiral dynamics of two flavors of quarks at finite temperature and density. Our calculations include thermal fluctuations of both the bosonic and fermionic fields. In particular, we determine the phase diagram in the plane of temperature and baryon chemical potential as a function of the pion mass. An interesting phase structure occurs that results in zero, one, or two critical points depending on the value of the vacuum pion mass.

Shear Transport Coefficients from Gauge/Gravity Correspondence

We study the shear mode in the gauge/gravity correspondence at finite temperature. First, we confirm the general formula for the shear viscosity in an arbitrary background metric which includes a black hole in the fifth dimension. We then derive a general formula for the shear mode relaxation time which appears in the theory of relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics; it agrees with known expressions in the limit of conformal fields. These results may be useful in relativistic viscous fluid descriptions of high energy nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC.

Formation of Gapless Phases of $K^0$ Condensed Color-Flavor Locked Superconducting Quark Matter

Electric and color neutral solutions, and the critical conditions for the formation of gapless color superconductors, are investigated in $K^0$ condensed color-flavor locked quark matter for nonzero strange quark mass. We show that as the strange quark mass increases, gapless modes for up-strange quark pairing occur first, followed by down-strange quark pairing. The behavior of the gaps, the dispersion relations, and the thermodynamic potential are all found as functions of the strange quark mass on the basis of a Nambu Jona-Lasinio type model. To a high degree of accuracy, they are presented as relatively simple elementary functions. This allows for easy computation for any reasonable range of baryon chemical potential and strange quark mass.

Near-Fields and Initial Energy Density in High Energy Nuclear Collisions

We calculate the classical gluon field created at early times in collisions of large nuclei at high energies. We find that the field is dominated by the longitudinal chromoelectric and chromomagnetic components. We estimate the initial energy density of this gluon field to be approximately 260 GeV/fm$^3$ at RHIC.

Gapless formation in the $K^0$ condensed color-flavor locked quark matter : a model-independent treatment

The electric/color neutral solution and the critical conditions for gapless formation are investigated in the $K^0$ condensed color-flavor locked matter. We point out that there exist no longer gapless modes for down-strange quark pairing while the gapless phenomenon for up-strange one is dominated in the $K^0$ condensed environment. In a model-independent way, the phase transition to the resulting gapless phase is found to be of first-order. The novel phase structure implies that the chromomagnetic instability happens in the previous-predicted gapless phase might be removed at least partly.

Antimatter from Microscopic Black Holes

The spectrum of positrons and antiprotons produced by the outflow of high temperature matter surrounding microscopic black holes is calculated for energies between five GeV and the Planck energy. The results may be applicable for the last few hours and minutes of a microscopic black hole's lifetime.

Rescattering Effects on Intensity Interferometry

We derive a general formula for the correlation function of two identical particles with the inclusion of multiple elastic scatterings in the medium in which the two particles are produced. This formula involves the propagator of the particle in the medium. As illustration of the effect we apply the formula to the special case where the scatterers are static, localized 2-body potentials. In this illustration both $R^2_{\rm side}$ and $R^2_{\rm out}$ are increased by an amount proportional to the square of the spatial density of scatterers and to the differential cross section. Specific numbers are used to show the expected magnitude of the rescattering effect on kaon interferometry.

Neutrino Superfluidity

It is shown that Dirac-type neutrinos display BCS superfluidity for any nonzero mass. The Cooper pairs are formed by attractive scalar Higgs boson exchange between left- and right-handed neutrinos; in the standard SU(2)xU(1) theory, right-handed neutrinos do not couple to any other boson. The value of the gap, the critical temperature, and the Pippard coherence length are calculated for arbitrary values of the neutrino mass and chemical potential. Although such a superfluid could conceivably exist, detecting it would be a major challenge.

Rate Equation Network for Baryon Production in High Energy Nuclear Collisions

We develop and solve a network of rate equations for the production of baryons and anti-baryons in high energy nuclear collisions. We include all members of the baryon octet and decuplet and allow for transformations among them. This network is solved during a relativistic 2+1 hydrodynamical expansion of the of the hot matter created in the collision. As an application we compare to the number of protons, lambdas, negative cascades, and omega baryons measured at mid-rapidity in central collisions of gold nuclei at 65 GeV per nucleon at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC).

Dileptons and Photons from Coarse-Grained Microscopic Dynamics and Hydrodynamics Compared to Experimental Data

Radiation of dileptons and photons from high energy nuclear collisions provides information on the space-time evolution of the hot dense matter produced therein. We compute this radiation using relativistic hydrodynamics and a coarse-grained version of the microscopic event generator UrQMD, both of which provide a good description of the hadron spectra. The currently most accurate dilepton and photon emission rates from perturbative QCD and from experimentally-based hadronic calculations are used. Comparisons are made to data on central Pb-Pb and Pb-Au collisions taken at the CERN SPS at a beam energy of 158 A GeV. Both hydrodynamics and UrQMD provide very good descriptions of the photon transverse momentum spectrum measured between 1 and 4 GeV, but slightly underestimate the low mass spectrum of e+e- pairs, even with greatly broadened rho and omega vector mesons. Predictions are given for the transverse momentum distribution of dileptons.

Possible Evidence of Disoriented Chiral Condensates from the Anomaly in Omega and AntiOmega Abundances at the SPS

No conventional picture of nucleus-nucleus collisions has yet been able to explain the abundance of Omega and AntiOmega in central collisions between Pb nuclei at 158 A GeV at the CERN SPS. We argue that such a deviation from predictions of statistical thermal models and numerical simulations is evidence that they are produced as topological defects in the form of skyrmions arising from the formation of disoriented chiral condensates. The estimated domain size falls in the right range to be consistent with the so far non-observation of DCC from the distribution of neutral pions.

Domain Wall Dynamics of Phase Interfaces

The statics and dynamics of a surface separating two phases of a relativistic quantum field theory at or near the critical temperature typically make use of a free energy as a functional of an order parameter. This free energy functional also affords an economical description of states away from equilibrium. The similarities and differences between using a scalar field as the order parameter versus the energy density are examined, and a peculiarity is noted. We also point out several conceptual errors in the literature dealing with the dynamical prefactor in the nucleation rate.

Cosmic Shells

When a potential for a scalar field has two local minima there arise spherical shell-type solutions of the classical field equations due to gravitational attraction. We establish such solutions numerically in a space which is asymptotically de Sitter. It generically arises when the energy scale characterizing the scalar field potential is much less than the Planck scale. It is shown that the mirror image of the shell appears in the other half of the Penrose diagram. The configuration is smooth everywhere with no physical singularity.

Collective Deceleration of Ultrarelativistic Nuclei and Creation of Quark-Gluon Plasma

We propose a unified space-time picture of baryon stopping and quark-gluon plasma creation in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. It is assumed that the highly Lorentz contracted nuclei are decelerated by the coherent color field which is formed between them after they pass through each other. This process continues until the field is neutralized by the Schwinger mechanism. Conservation of energy and momentum allow us to calculate the energy losses of the nuclear slabs and the initial energy density of the quark-gluon plasma.

High Temperature Matter and Gamma Ray Spectra from Microscopic Black Holes

The relativistic viscous fluid equations describing the outflow of high temperature matter created via Hawking radiation from microscopic black holes are solved numerically for a realistic equation of state. We focus on black holes with initial temperatures greater than 100 GeV and lifetimes less than 6 days. The spectra of direct photons and photons from $π^0$ decay are calculated for energies greater than 1 GeV. We calculate the diffuse gamma ray spectrum from black holes distributed in our galactic halo. However, the most promising route for their observation is to search for point sources emitting gamma rays of ever-increasing energy.

Two-Loop Self-Energy and Multiple Scattering at Finite Temperature

One and two loop self-energies are worked out explicitly for a heavy scalar field interacting weakly with a light self-interacting scalar field at finite temperature. The ring/daisy diagrams and a set of necklace diagrams can be summed simultaneously. This simple model serves to illustrate the connection between multi-loop self-energy diagrams and multiple scattering in a medium.

Relativistic Viscous Fluid Description of Microscopic Black Hole Wind

Microscopic black holes explode with their temperature varying inversely as their mass. Such explosions would lead to the highest temperatures in the present universe, all the way to the Planck energy. Whether or not a quasi-stationary shell of matter undergoing radial hydrodynamic expansion surrounds such black holes is been controversial. In this paper relativistic viscous fluid equations are applied to the problem. It is shown that a self-consistent picture emerges of a fluid just marginally kept in local thermal equilibrium; viscosity is a crucial element of the dynamics.
