A MATLAB Tool for the Stable Generation of Matrix Polynomial Evaluation Schemes with Two-Product Savings

Computing numerical approximations of matrix functions frequently relies on the efficient evaluation of high-degree matrix polynomials. Although computational bounds are historically governed by the Paterson--Stockmeyer (PS) method, recent theoretical developments have demonstrated the viability of evaluation schemes that eliminate two matrix products ($2M$). Existing literature documents stable instances of this $2M$ reduction only for isolated cases, such as specific degrees of Taylor approximations for the matrix exponential and the matrix logarithm. However, a generalized approach for arbitrary polynomials remains unestablished. To address this limitation, this work presents a software-driven procedure that extends these computational savings to polynomials of degrees $m \in \{18, 21, 24, 26, 27, 28\}$ and all $m \ge 30$, requiring primarily a non-zero leading coefficient. Since the underlying evaluation coefficients must be determined by solving systems of nonlinear equations (SNEs), selecting a numerically stable solution set is critical. We introduce an automated verification routine designed to filter and validate robust coefficient sets for floating-point execution. The primary contribution is a MATLAB implementation leveraging variable precision arithmetic to handle the underlying SNEs, verify stability, and project precision bounds. Numerical experiments involving various matrix functions verify that the developed implementation preserves or, in some instances, enhances the numerical accuracy of the classic PS method, while systematically achieving the theoretical reduction of $2M$.

A Systematic Framework for Stable and Cost-Efficient Matrix Polynomial Evaluation

A method for evaluating matrix polynomials have recently been developed that require one fewer matrix product ($1M$) than the Paterson--Stockmeyer (PS) method. Since the computational cost for large-scale matrices is asymptotically determined by the number of matrix products, this reduction directly affects the total execution time. However, the coefficients in these optimized formulas emerge as solutions to systems of nonlinear polynomial equations, resulting in multiple potential solution sets. An inappropriate selection of these coefficients can lead to numerical instability in floating-point arithmetic. This paper presents a systematic framework and a MATLAB implementation, MatrixPolEval1, used to obtain and validate stable coefficient sets for matrix polynomials of degrees $m \in \{8, 10, 12\}$ and above. The framework introduces structural variants to maintain stability even when the original configuration fails to yield a robust solution. The provided tool identifies stable coefficient sets using variable precision arithmetic (VPA) and provides a reliability indicator for expected accuracy. Numerical experiments on polynomials arising in applications, including the matrix exponential and geometric series, show that the framework achieves the $1M$ saving while maintaining numerical accuracy comparable to the PS method.

Pressure-driven phase transitions in bulk HfS$_2$

The effect of hydrostatic pressure up to 27 GPa on the Raman scattering (RS) in bulk HfS$_2$ is investigated. There are two transformations of RS spectra, which take place during compression at pressure between 5.7 GPa and 9.8 GPa as well as between 12.8 GPa and 15.2 GPa. Seven vibrational modes can be observed after the transformation, as compared to four modes before the transformation. The observed change suggests structural change in the material of yet unknown nature. The frequencies of the RS modes observed above the transformation change linearly with pressure and corresponding pressure coefficients have been determined. The other transition manifests itself as a change in the RS lineshape. While a series of well-defined RS modes are observed under pressure below the transition, broad spectral bands can be seen at higher pressure. The overall lineshape of the spectra resembles that of disordered materials. The lineshape does not change during decompression, which suggests permanent nature of the high-pressure transition.

Nature of the vorticity in the Gödel spacetime

The physical meaning of the vorticity of the matter content in Gödel spacetime is analyzed in some detail. As we shall see, unlike the situation in general stationnary axially symmetric spacetimes (Lewis--Papapetrou), the vorticity in Gödel spacetime is not associated to a circular flow of superenergy on the plane orthogonal to the vorticity vector. This fact might be at the origin of the strange behaviour of gyroscopes in such spacetime. The analysis emerging from the tilted version of Gödel spacetime supports further this point of view. In order to tell apart the two situations (with and without circular flow of superenergy) we introduce two different definitions of vorticity, related to the presence (absence) of such a flow.

Disks in Expanding FRW Universes

We construct exact solutions to Einstein equations which represent relativistic disks immersed into an expanding FRW Universe. It is shown that the expansion influences dynamical characteristics of the disks such as rotational curves, surface mass density, etc. The effects of the expansion is exemplified with non-static generalizations of Kuzmin-Curzon and generalized Schwarzschild disks.

Asymptotic behaviour of a class of inhomogeneous scalar field cosmologies

The asymptotic behaviour of a class of inhomogeneous scalar field cosmologies with a Liouville type of potential is studied. We define a set of new variables for which the phase space of the system of Einstein equations is bounded. This allows us to perform a complete analysis of the evolution of these cosmologies. We also discuss the extension of the cosmic no-hair theorem.

Cosmologies with Two-Dimensional Inhomogeneity

We present a new generating algorithm to construct exact non static solutions of the Einstein field equations with two-dimensional inhomogeneity. Infinite dimensional families of $G_1$ inhomogeneous solutions with a self interacting scalar field, or alternatively with perfect fluid, can be constructed using this algorithm. Some families of solutions and the applications of the algorithm are discussed.

Scalar Field Inhomogeneous Cosmologies

Some exact solutions for the Einstein field equations corresponding to inhomogeneous $G_2$ cosmologies with an exponential-potential scalar field which generalize solutions obtained previously are considered. Several particular cases are studied and the properties related to generalized inflation and asymptotic behaviour of the models are discussed.
