Comparative study of the high-pressure behavior of ZnV2O6, Zn2V2O7, and Zn3V2O8

We report a study of the high-pressure structural behavior of ZnV2O6, Zn2V2O7, and Zn3V2O8, which has been explored by means of synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction. We found that ZnV2O6 and Zn3V2O8 remain in the ambient-pressure structure up to 15 GPa. In contrast, in the same pressure range, Zn2V2O7 undergoes three phase transitions at 0.7, 3.0, and 10.8 GPa, respectively. Possible crystal structures for the first and second high-pressure phases are proposed. Reasons for the distinctive behavior of Zn2V2O7 are discussed. The compressibility of the different polymorphs has been determined. The response to pressure is found to be anisotropic in all the considered compounds and the room-temperature equations of state have been determined. The bulk moduli of ZnV2O6 (129(2) GPa) and Zn3V2O8 (120(2) GPa) are consistent with a structural framework composed of compressible ZnO6 octahedra and uncompressible VO4 tetrahedra. In contrast, Zn2V2O7 is highly compressible with a bulk modulus of 58(9) GPa, which is almost half of the bulk modulus of the other two vanadates. The large compressibility of Zn2V2O7 and its sequence of structural transitions are related to the fact that this material is less dense than the other zinc vanadates and to the penta-coordination of Zn atoms by oxygen atoms in Zn2V2O7. A comparison to the high-pressure behavior of related compounds is presented.

Excitonic luminescence of iodine-intercalated HfS$_2$

Photoluminescence from bulk HfS$_2$ grown by the chemical vapor transport method is reported. A series of emission lines is apparent at low temperature in the energy range of 1.4 - 1.5 eV. Two groups of the observed excitonic transitions followed by their replicas involving acoustic and optical phonons are distinguished using classical intensity correlation analysis. The emission is attributed to the recombination of excitons bound to iodine (I$_2$) molecules intercalated between layers of HfS$_2$. The I$_2$ molecules are introduced to the crystal during the growth as halogen transport agents in the growth process. Their presence in the crystal is confirmed by secondary ion mass spectroscopy.

High-pressure high-temperature phase diagram of zinc

The phase diagram of Zn has been explored up to 140 GPa and 6000 K, by combining optical observations, x-ray diffraction, and ab-initio calculations. In the pressure range covered by this study, Zn is found to retain a hexagonal close-packed crystal symmetry up to the melting temperature. The known decrease of the axial ratio of the hcp phase of Zn under compression is observed in x-ray diffraction experiments from 300 K up to the melting temperature. The pressure at which the axial ratio reaches the square root of 3 value, around 10 GPa, is slightly affected by temperature. When this axial ratio is reached, we observed that single crystals of Zn, formed at high temperature, break into multiple polycrystals. In addition, a noticeable change in the pressure dependence of the axial ratio takes place at the same pressure. Both phenomena could be caused by an isomorphic second-order phase transition induced by pressure in Zn. The reported melt curve extends previous results from 24 to 135 GPa. The pressure dependence obtained for the melting temperature is accurately described up to 135 GPa by using a Simon-Glatzel equation. The determined melt curve agrees with previous low-pressure studies and with shock-wave experiments, with a melting temperature of 5060 K at 135 GPa. Finally, a thermal equation of state is reported, which at room-temperature agrees with the literature.

Bianchi II Brane-world Cosmologies (${\cal U}\geq 0$)

The asymptotic properties of the Bianchi type II cosmological model in the Brane-world scenario are investigated. The matter content is assumed to be a combination of a perfect fluid and a minimimally coupled scalar field that is restricted to the Brane. The isotropic braneworld solution is determined to represent the initial singularity in all brane-world cosmologies. Additionally, it is shown that it is the kinetic energy of the scalar field which dominates the initial dynamics in these brane-world cosmologies. It is important to note that, the dynamics of these brane-world cosmologies is not necessarily asymptotic to general relativistic cosmologies to the future in the case of a zero four-dimensional cosmological constant.

On Scaling Solutions with a Dissipative Fluid

We study the asymptotic behaviour of scaling solutions with a dissipative fluid and we show that, contrary to recent claims, the existence of stable accelerating attractor solution which solves the `energy' coincidence problem depends crucially on the chosen equations of state for the thermodynamical variables. We discuss two types of equations of state, one which contradicts this claim, and one which supports it.

On the dual interpretation of zero-curvature Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models

Two possible interpretations of FRW cosmologies (perfect fluid or dissipative fluid)are considered as consecutive phases of the system. Necessary conditions are found, for the transition from perfect fluid to dissipative regime to occur, bringing out the conspicuous role played by a particular state of the system (the ''critical point '').

Qualitative analysis of dissipative cosmologies

The evolution of an homogeneous and isotropic dissipative fluid is analyzed using dynamical systems techniques. The dissipation is driven by bulk viscous pressure and the truncated Israel-Stewart theory is used. Although almost all solutions inflate, we show that only few of them can be considered as physical solutions since the dominant energy condition is not satisfied.

Scalar Field Cosmologies with Barotropic Matter: Models of Bianchi class B

We investigate in detail the qualitative behaviour of the class of Bianchi type B spatially homogeneous cosmological models in which the matter content is composed of two non-interacting components; the first component is described by a barotropic fluid having a gamma-law equation of state, whilst the second is a non-interacting scalar field (phi) with an exponential potential V=Lambda exp(k phi). In particular, we study the asymptotic properties of the models both at early and late times, paying particular attention on whether the models isotropize (and inflate) to the future, and we discuss the genericity of the cosmological scaling solutions.

On the evolution of a large class of inhomogeneous scalar field cosmologies

The asymptotic behaviour of a family of inhomogeneous scalar field cosmologies with exponential potential is studied. By introducing new variables we can perform an almost complete analysis of the evolution of these cosmologies. Unlike the homogeneous case (Bianchi type solutions), when k^2<2 the models do not isotropize due to the presence of the inhomogeneities

Exponential-Potential Scalar Field Universes I: The Bianchi I Models

We obtain a general exact solution of the Einstein field equations for the anisotropic Bianchi type I universes filled with an exponential-potential scalar field and study their dynamics. It is shown, in agreement with previous studies, that for a wide range of initial conditions the late-time behaviour of the models is that of a power-law inflating FRW universe. This property, does not hold, in contrast, when some degree of inhomogeneity is introduced, as discussed in our following paper II.

Exponential-Potential Scalar Field Universes II: The Inhomogeneous Models

We obtain exact solutions for the Einstein equations with an exponential-potential scalar field (\(V=Λe^{kϕ}\)) which represent simple inhomogeneous generalizations of Bianchi I cosmologies. Studying these equations numerically we find that in most of the cases there is a certain period of inflationary behaviour for \(k^2<2\). We as well find that for \(k^2>2\) the solutions homogenize generically at late times. Yet, {\em none of the solutions} isotropize. For some particular values of the integration constants we find a multiple inflationary behaviour for which the deceleration and the inflationary phases interchange each other several times during the history of the model.
