Single-shot all-optical magnetization switching in in-plane magnetized magnetic tunnel junction

Single pulse All Optical Helicity-Independent Switching is demonstrated in an in-plane magnetized magnetic tunnel junction. A toggle switching of the 2nm thick Co40Fe40B20 soft layer could be achieved by exchange coupling the Co40Fe40B20 with a 10nm thick Co85Gd15 layer monitored by measuring the Tunnel magneto resistance of the device. The use of in plane magnetized electrodes relaxes the constrains linked to perpendicular magnetic anisotropy systems while achieving a tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio exceeding 100%. The influence of the upper electrical electrode, which is opaque to the laser beam in this study, is also discussed.

Charge dynamics in strongly correlated one-dimensional Cu-O chain systems revealed by inelastic X-ray scattering

We report on the Cu 1s resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) of Cu-O one-dimensional (1D) strongly correlated insulator systems with contrasting atomic arrangements, namely edge-sharing CuGeO3 and corner-sharing Sr2CuO3. Owing to good statistics of the high-resolution RIXS data, so far unresolved fine structures are revealed. Detailed photon-energy and momentum dependence of the RIXS spectra in comparison with theoretical calculations has clarified the natures of the low-energy charge excitations and hybridization of the electronic states.

Magnetic Resonant X-Ray Scattering in KCuF3

We study the magnetic resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) spectra around the $K$ edge of Cu in KCuF$_3$ on the basis of an {\em ab initio} calculation. We use the full-potential linearlized augmented plane wave method in the LDA$+U$ scheme, and introduce the lattice distortion as inputs of the calculation. We obtain finite intensity on magnetic superlattice spots, about three orders of magnitude smaller than on orbital superlattice spots, by taking account of the spin-orbit interaction (SOI). No intensity appears without the SOI, indicating that the intensity arises not from the spin polarization but from the orbital polarization in $4p$ states. The present calculation reproduces well the experimental spectra as functions of photon energy and of azimuthal angle. We also calculate the RXS intensity on orbital superlattice spots. It is found that the intensity increases with increasing Jahn-Teller distortion. The spectra remain nearly the same in the nonmagnetic state given by the simple LDA, in which the orbital polarization in the 3d states is much smaller. This strongly suggests that the intensity on orbital spots is mainly controlled by the lattice distortion, not by the 3d orbital order itself.

Magnetic impurities coupled to quantum antiferromagnets in one dimension

Magnetic impurities coupled antiferromagnetically to a one-dimensional Heisenberg model are studied by numerical diagonalization of chains of finite clusters. By calculating the binding energy and the correlation function, it is shown that a local singlet develops around each impurity. This holds true for systems with a single impurity, with two impurities, and for impurities forming a lattice. The local character of the singlet is found to be little affected by the presence of other impurity spins. A small effective interaction is found between a pair of impurity spins, which oscillates depending on impurity distances. For impurity lattices, the energy spectrum shows a gap which is found to be much smaller than the binding energy per impurity if the coupling constants are small. For larger coupling constants, it increases to the same order of magnitude as the binding energy, indicating that a local singlet is broken to create excited states. Impurity lattices with ferromagnetic couplings are also studied and their connection to the Haldane problem is discussed.
