From Many Models to ONE THEORY

The year 2024 marks two anniversaries: The 70th anniversary of CERN and the 50th anniversary of the $J/\Psi$ discovery. At this occasion I have been asked to give review talks on the significance of these anniversaries. This article is an expanded version of these talks.

Charting the European Course to the High-Energy Frontier

We review the capabilities of two projects that have been proposed as the next major European facility, for consideration in the upcoming update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics: CLIC and FCC. We focus on their physics potentials and emphasise the key differences between the linear or circular approaches. We stress the uniqueness of the FCC-ee programme for precision electroweak physics at the $Z$ peak and the $WW$ threshold, as well as its unequalled statistics for Higgs physics and high accuracy for observing possible new phenomena in Higgs and $Z$ decays, whereas CLIC and FCC-ee offer similar capabilities near the $t \overline t$ threshold. Whilst CLIC offers the possibility of energy upgrades to 1500 and 3000 GeV, FCC-ee paves the way for FCC-hh. The latter offers unique capabilities for making direct or indirect discoveries in a new energy range, and has the highest sensitivity to the self-couplings of the Higgs boson and any anomalous couplings. We consider the FCC programme to be the best option to maintain Europe's place at the high-energy frontier during the coming decades.

Can we predict the value of the Higgs mass?

In the framework of the Standard Model the mass of the physical Higgs boson is an arbitrary parameter. In this note we examine whether it is possible to determine the ratio of $m_H /M$, where $M$ denotes any other mass in the theory, such as the $W$ or the $Z$-boson mass. We show that no such relation can be stable under renormalisation.

Gauge theories and non-commutative geometry

It is shown that a $d$-dimensional classical SU(N) Yang-Mills theory can be formulated in a $d+2$-dimensional space, with the extra two dimensions forming a surface with non-commutative geometry. In this paper we present an explicit proof for the case of the torus and the sphere.

Perturbative Quantum Gravity And Newton's Law On A Flat Robertson-Walker Background

We derive the Feynman rules for the graviton in the presence of a flat Robertson-Walker background and give explicit expressions for the propagator in the physically interesting cases of inflation, radiation domination, and matter domination. The aforementioned background is generated by a scalar field source which should be taken to be dynamical. As an elementary application, we compute the corrections to the Newtonian gravitational force in the present matter dominated era and conclude -- as expected -- that they are negligible except for the largest scales.

One-loop effective action around de Sitter space

The non-local one-loop contribution to the gravitational effective action around de Sitter space is computed using the background field method with pure trace external gravitational fields and it is shown to vanish. The calculation is performed in a generic covariant gauge and the result is verified to be gauge invariant.
