Contact-based and spheroidal vibrational modes of a hexagonal monolayer of microspheres on a substrate

We study acoustic modes of a close-packed hexagonal lattice of spheres adhered to a substrate, propagating along a high-symmetry direction. The model, accounting for both normal and shear coupling between the spheres and between the spheres and the substrate, yields three contact-based vibrational modes involving both translational and rotational motion of the spheres. Furthermore, we study the effect of sphere-substrate and sphere-sphere contacts on spheroidal vibrational modes of the spheres within a perturbative approach. The sphere-substrate interaction results in a frequency upshift for the modes having a non-zero displacement at the contact point with the substrate. Sphere-sphere interactions result in dispersion of spheroidal modes turning them into propagating waves, albeit with a small group velocity. Analytical dispersion relations for both contact-based and spheroidal modes are presented and compared with results obtained for a square lattice.

Steady State and Modulated Heat Conduction in Layered Systems Predicted by the Phonon Boltzmann Transport Equation

Based on the phonon Boltzmann transport equation under the relaxation time approximation, analytical expressions for the temperature profiles of both steady state and modulated heat conduction inside a thin film deposited on a substrate are derived and analyzed. It is shown that both steady state and modulated components of the temperature depend strongly on the ratio between the film thickness and the average phonon mean free path, and they exhibit the diffusive behavior as predicted by the Fourier law of heat conduction when this ratio is much larger than the unity. In contrast, in the ballistic regime when this ratio is comparable to or smaller than the unity, the steady-state temperature tends to be independent of position, while the amplitude and the phase of the modulated temperature appear to be lower than those determined by the Fourier law. Furthermore, we derived an invariant of heat conduction and a simple formula for the cross-plane thermal conductivity of dielectric thin films, which could be a useful guide for understanding and optimizing the thermal performance of the layered systems. This work represents the Boltzmann transport equation-based extension of the Rosencwaig and Gerko work [J. Appl. Phys. 47, 64 (1976)], which is based on the Fourier law and has widely been used as the theoretical framework for the development of photoacoustic and photothermal techniques. This work might shed some light on developing a theoretical basis for the determination of the phonon MFP and relaxation time using ultrafast laser-based transient heating techniques.

Scaling and wavelet-based analyses of the long-term heart rate variability of the Eastern Oyster

Characterisations of the long-term behaviour of heart rate variability in humans have emerged in the last few years as promising candidates to became clinically significant tools. We present two different statistical analyses of long time recordings of the heart rate variation in the Eastern Oyster. The circulatory system of this marine mollusk has important anatomical and physiological dissimilitudes in comparison to that of humans and it is exposed to dramatically different environmental influences. Our results resemble those previously obtained in humans. This suggests that in spite of the discrepancies, the mechanisms of long--term cardiac control on both systems share a common underlying dynamic.
