Compact Objects Revealed by SKA and SKA-VLBI

Compact objects represent a crucial interdisciplinary frontier between astronomy and fundamental physics. The SKA/SKA-VLBI, with exceptional sensitivity (at $μ$Jy levels) and ultrahigh positional precision (at $μ$as levels), will enable direct, precise measurements of orbital dynamics in compact objects including black holes and neutron stars. This facility is expected to achieve at least three breakthroughs: (1) Developing effective methodologies for detecting and identifying black hole-neutron star binaries to construct observational catalogues, thus advancing investigations into the equation of state of ultra-dense nuclear matter and strong-field relativistic effects; (2) Determining critical parameters such as orbital elements and component masses in compact binaries, yielding insights into stellar structures and evolutionary mechanisms under extreme conditions; (3) Identifying intermediate-mass black holes and measuring their masses to deepen understanding of black hole formation and evolution.

Gravitational Light Deflection with SKA-VLBI and Its Application to Precision Tests of General Relativity

Experimental test of general relativity remains an ongoing endeavour. Radio astrometry provides a vital tool for precisely measuring the light deflection caused by the Sun, testing general relativity, and discriminating between gravitational theories. The best accuracy for the post-Newtonian relativistic parameter, $γ$, achieved with very long baseline interferometry is $9 \times 10^{-5}$. With 300-sec integration, SKA-VLBI can achieve a sensitivity of $\sim$15 $μ$Jy at 15 GHz over a bandwidth of 0.256 GHz. This enables detection of $\sim$36 extragalactic radio sources per square degree with flux densities of $\sim$1.5 mJy, and potentially detecting in-beam radio sources. Single-epoch SKA-VLBI observations may achieve an astrometric precision of $\sim$2 $μ$as. Utilising the Sun as a gravitational lens, 10-epoch positional tracking of extragalactic sources could improve $γ$ accuracy to $\sim$10$^{-7}$. Even with Jupiter as a lens, SKA-VLBI can measure $γ$ to $\sim$10$^{-4}$. Critically, it may conduct the first measurement of quadrupolar deflection of light caused by Jupiter, determining the physical oblateness of Jupiter, $J_{\mathrm{2, J}}$, to within $\sim${}$10^{-3}$. These advances are expected to rigorously test and improve gravitational theories or high-order parameterized post-Newtonian formalisms, while laying the foundations for (sub)$μ$as astrometry.

Comprehensive Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Spectrum and Flux at Daya Bay

This Letter reports the precise measurement of reactor antineutrino spectrum and flux based on the full data set of 4.7 million inverse-beta-decay (IBD) candidates collected at Daya Bay near detectors. Expressed in terms of the IBD yield per fission, the antineutrino spectra from all reactor fissile isotopes and the specific $\mathrm{^{235}U}$ and $\mathrm{^{239}Pu}$ isotopes are measured with 1.3$\%$, 3$\%$ and 8$\%$ uncertainties respectively near the 3 MeV spectrum peak in reconstructed energy, reaching the best precision in the world. The total antineutrino flux and isotopic $\mathrm{^{235}U}$ and $\mathrm{^{239}Pu}$ fluxes are precisely measured to be $5.84\pm0.07$, $6.16\pm0.12$ and $4.16\pm0.21$ in units of $10^{-43} \mathrm{cm^2/fission}$. These measurements are compared with the Huber-Mueller (HM) model, the reevaluated conversion model based on the Kurchatov Institute (KI) measurement and the latest Summation Model (SM2023). The Daya Bay flux shows good consistency with KI and SM2023 models, but disagrees with HM model. The Daya Bay spectrum, however, disagrees with all model predictions.

Measurement of Electron Antineutrino Oscillation Amplitude and Frequency via Neutron Capture on Hydrogen at Daya Bay

This Letter reports the first measurement of the oscillation amplitude and frequency of reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay via neutron capture on hydrogen using 1958 days of data. With over 3.6 million signal candidates, an optimized candidate selection, improved treatment of backgrounds and efficiencies, refined energy calibration, and an energy response model for the capture-on-hydrogen sensitive region, the relative $\overlineν_{e}$ rates and energy spectra variation among the near and far detectors gives $\mathrm{sin}^22θ_{13} = 0.0759_{-0.0049}^{+0.0050}$ and $Δm^2_{32} = (2.72^{+0.14}_{-0.15})\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ assuming the normal neutrino mass ordering, and $Δm^2_{32} = (-2.83^{+0.15}_{-0.14})\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ for the inverted neutrino mass ordering. This estimate of $\sin^2 2θ_{13}$ is consistent with and essentially independent from the one obtained using the capture-on-gadolinium sample at Daya Bay. The combination of these two results yields $\mathrm{sin}^22θ_{13}= 0.0833\pm0.0022$, which represents an 8% relative improvement in precision regarding the Daya Bay full 3158-day capture-on-gadolinium result.

Search for a sub-eV sterile neutrino using Daya Bay's full dataset

This Letter presents results of a search for the mixing of a sub-eV sterile neutrino with three active neutrinos based on the full data sample of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, collected during 3158 days of detector operation, which contains $5.55 \times 10^{6}$ reactor \anue candidates identified as inverse beta-decay interactions followed by neutron-capture on gadolinium. The analysis benefits from a doubling of the statistics of our previous result and from improvements of several important systematic uncertainties. No significant oscillation due to mixing of a sub-eV sterile neutrino with active neutrinos was found. Exclusion limits are set by both Feldman-Cousins and CLs methods. Light sterile neutrino mixing with $\sin^2 2θ_{14} \gtrsim 0.01$ can be excluded at 95\% confidence level in the region of $0.01$ eV$^2 \lesssim |Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.1 $ eV$^2$. This result represents the world-leading constraints in the region of $2 \times 10^{-4}$ eV$^2 \lesssim |Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.2 $ eV$^2$.

On the Structure of the Sagittarius Spiral Arm in the Inner Milky Way

We report measurements of trigonometric parallax and proper motion for two 6.7 GHz methanol and two 22 GHz water masers located in the far portion of the Sagittarius spiral arm as part of the BeSSeL Survey. Distances for these sources are estimated from parallax measurements combined with 3-dimensional kinematic distances. The distances of G033.64$-$00.22, G035.57$-$00.03, G041.15$-$00.20, and G043.89$-$00.78 are $9.9\pm0.5$, $10.2\pm0.6$, $7.6\pm0.5$, and $7.5\pm0.3$ kpc, respectively. Based on these measurements, we suggest that the Sagittarius arm segment beyond about 8 kpc from the Sun in the first Galactic quadrant should be adjusted radially outward relative to previous models. This supports the suggestion of Xu et al. (2023) that the Sagittarius and Perseus spiral arms might merge in the first quadrant before spiraling inward to the far end of the Galactic bar.

Charged-current non-standard neutrino interactions at Daya Bay

The full data set of the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment is used to probe the effect of the charged current non-standard interactions (CC-NSI) on neutrino oscillation experiments. Two different approaches are applied and constraints on the corresponding CC-NSI parameters are obtained with the neutrino flux taken from the Huber-Mueller model with a $5\%$ uncertainty. For the quantum mechanics-based approach (QM-NSI), the constraints on the CC-NSI parameters $ε_{eα}$ and $ε_{eα}^{s}$ are extracted with and without the assumption that the effects of the new physics are the same in the production and detection processes, respectively. The approach based on the weak effective field theory (WEFT-NSI) deals with four types of CC-NSI represented by the parameters $[\varepsilon_{X}]_{eα}$. For both approaches, the results for the CC-NSI parameters are shown for cases with various fixed values of the CC-NSI and the Dirac CP-violating phases, and when they are allowed to vary freely. We find that constraints on the QM-NSI parameters $ε_{eα}$ and $ε_{eα}^{s}$ from the Daya Bay experiment alone can reach the order $\mathcal{O}(0.01)$ for the former and $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ for the latter, while for WEFT-NSI parameters $[\varepsilon_{X}]_{eα}$, we obtain $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ for both cases.

First measurement of the yield of $^8$He isotopes produced in liquid scintillator by cosmic-ray muons at Daya Bay

Daya Bay presents the first measurement of cosmogenic $^8$He isotope production in liquid scintillator, using an innovative method for identifying cascade decays of $^8$He and its child isotope, $^8$Li. We also measure the production yield of $^9$Li isotopes using well-established methodology. The results, in units of 10$^{-8}μ^{-1}$g$^{-1}$cm$^{2}$, are 0.307$\pm$0.042, 0.341$\pm$0.040, and 0.546$\pm$0.076 for $^8$He, and 6.73$\pm$0.73, 6.75$\pm$0.70, and 13.74$\pm$0.82 for $^9$Li at average muon energies of 63.9~GeV, 64.7~GeV, and 143.0~GeV, respectively. The measured production rate of $^8$He isotopes is more than an order of magnitude lower than any other measurement of cosmogenic isotope production. It replaces the results of previous attempts to determine the ratio of $^8$He to $^9$Li production that yielded a wide range of limits from 0 to 30\%. The results provide future liquid-scintillator-based experiments with improved ability to predict cosmogenic backgrounds.

What Does the Milky Way Look Like?

In spite of much work, the overall spiral structure morphology of the Milky Way remains somewhat uncertain. In the last two decades, accurate distance measurements have provided us with an opportunity to solve this issue. Using the precise locations of very young objects, for the first time, we propose that our galaxy has a multiple-arm morphology that consists of two-arm symmetry (the Perseus and Norma Arms) in the inner parts and that extends to the outer parts, where there are several long, irregular arms (the Centaurus, Sagittarius, Carina, Outer, and Local Arms).

Precision measurement of reactor antineutrino oscillation at kilometer-scale baselines by Daya Bay

We present a new determination of the smallest neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and the mass-squared difference $Δ{\rm m}^{2}_{32}$ using a final sample of $5.55 \times 10^{6}$ inverse beta-decay (IBD) candidates with the final-state neutron captured on gadolinium. This sample was selected from the complete data set obtained by the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment in 3158 days of operation. Compared to the previous Daya Bay results, selection of IBD candidates has been optimized, energy calibration refined, and treatment of backgrounds further improved. The resulting oscillation parameters are ${\rm sin}^{2}2θ_{13} = 0.0851 \pm 0.0024$, $Δ{\rm m}^{2}_{32} = (2.466 \pm 0.060) \times 10^{-3}{\rm eV}^{2}$ for the normal mass ordering or $Δ{\rm m}^{2}_{32} = -(2.571 \pm 0.060) \times 10^{-3} {\rm eV}^{2}$ for the inverted mass ordering.

First measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay

This Letter reports the first measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay, with nearly 9000 inverse beta decay candidates in the prompt energy region of 8-12~MeV observed over 1958 days of data collection. A multivariate analysis is used to separate 2500 signal events from background statistically. The hypothesis of no reactor antineutrinos with neutrino energy above 10~MeV is rejected with a significance of 6.2 standard deviations. A 29\% antineutrino flux deficit in the prompt energy region of 8-11~MeV is observed compared to a recent model prediction. We provide the unfolded antineutrino spectrum above 7 MeV as a data-based reference for other experiments. This result provides the first direct observation of the production of antineutrinos from several high-$Q_β$ isotopes in commercial reactors.

Joint Determination of Reactor Antineutrino Spectra from $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu Fission by Daya Bay and PROSPECT

A joint determination of the reactor antineutrino spectra resulting from the fission of $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu has been carried out by the Daya Bay and PROSPECT collaborations. This Letter reports the level of consistency of $^{235}$U spectrum measurements from the two experiments and presents new results from a joint analysis of both data sets. The measurements are found to be consistent. The combined analysis reduces the degeneracy between the dominant $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu isotopes and improves the uncertainty of the $^{235}$U spectral shape to about 3\%. The ${}^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu antineutrino energy spectra are unfolded from the jointly deconvolved reactor spectra using the Wiener-SVD unfolding method, providing a data-based reference for other reactor antineutrino experiments and other applications. This is the first measurement of the $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu spectra based on the combination of experiments at low- and highly enriched uranium reactors.

Observation of the $π^2σ^2$-bond linear-chain molecular structure in $^{16}$C

Measurements of the $^2$H($^{16}$C,$^{16}$C$^{*}$$\rightarrow^4$He+$^{12}$Be or $^6$He+$^{10}$Be)$^2$H inelastic excitation and cluster-decay reactions have been carried out at a beam energy of about 23.5 MeV/u. A specially designed detection system, including one multi-layer silicon-strip telescope at around zero degrees, has allowed the high-efficiency three-fold coincident detection and therefore the event-by-event determination of the energy of the unstable nucleus beam. The decay paths from the $^{16}$C resonances to various states of the final $^{10}$Be or $^{12}$Be nucleus are recognized thanks to the well-resolved $Q$-value spectra. The reconstructed resonances at 16.5(1), 17.3(2), 19.4(1) and 21.6(2) MeV are assigned as the $0^+$, $2^+$, $4^+$ and $6^+$ members, respectively, of the positive-parity $(3/2_π^-)^2(1/2_σ^-)^2$-bond linear-chain molecular band in $^{16}$C, based on the angular correlation analysis for the 16.5 MeV state and the excellent agreement of decay patterns between the measurements and theoretical predictions. Moreover, another intriguing high-lying state was observed at 27.2(1) MeV which decays almost exclusively to the $\sim$6 MeV states of $^{10}$Be, in line with the newly predicted pure $σ$-bond linear-chain configuration.

Evolution of the local spiral structure of the Milky Way revealed by open clusters

The structure and evolution of the spiral arms of our Milky Way are basic but long-standing questions in astronomy. In particular, the lifetime of spiral arms is still a puzzle and has not been well constrained from observations. In this work, we aim to inspect these issues using a large catalogue of open clusters. We compiled a catalogue of 3794 open clusters based on Gaia EDR3. A majority of these clusters have accurately determined parallaxes, proper motions, and radial velocities. The age parameters for these open clusters are collected from references or calculated in this work. In order to understand the nearby spiral structure and its evolution, we analysed the distributions, kinematic properties, vertical distributions, and regressed properties of subsamples of open clusters. We find evidence that the nearby spiral arms are compatible with a long-lived spiral pattern and might have remained approximately stable for the past 80 million years. In particular, the Local Arm, where our Sun is currently located, is also suggested to be long-lived in nature and probably a major arm segment of the Milky Way. The evolutionary characteristics of nearby spiral arms show that the dynamic spiral mechanism might be not prevalent for our Galaxy. Instead, density wave theory is more consistent with the observational properties of open clusters.

Antineutrino Energy Spectrum Unfolding Based on the Daya Bay Measurement and Its Applications

The prediction of reactor antineutrino spectra will play a crucial role as reactor experiments enter the precision era. The positron energy spectrum of 3.5 million antineutrino inverse beta decay reactions observed by the Daya Bay experiment, in combination with the fission rates of fissile isotopes in the reactor, is used to extract the positron energy spectra resulting from the fission of specific isotopes. This information can be used to produce a precise, data-based prediction of the antineutrino energy spectrum in other reactor antineutrino experiments with different fission fractions than Daya Bay. The positron energy spectra are unfolded to obtain the antineutrino energy spectra by removing the contribution from detector response with the Wiener-SVD unfolding method. Consistent results are obtained with other unfolding methods. A technique to construct a data-based prediction of the reactor antineutrino energy spectrum is proposed and investigated. Given the reactor fission fractions, the technique can predict the energy spectrum to a 2% precision. In addition, we illustrate how to perform a rigorous comparison between the unfolded antineutrino spectrum and a theoretical model prediction that avoids the input model bias of the unfolding method.

Characterization of VUV4 SiPM for Liquid Argon Detector

Particle detectors based on liquid argon are now recognised as an attractive technology for dark matter direct detection and coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering measurement. A program using a dual-phase liquid argon detector with a fiducial mass of 200~kg to detect coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering at Taishan Nuclear Power Plant has been proposed. SiPMs will be used as the photon sensor because of their high radio-purity and high photon detection efficiency. S13370-6050CN SiPM, made by Hamamatsu, is a candidate for the detector. In this paper, the characterisation of S13370-6050CN SiPM, including the cross talk and after pulse probabilities at liquid argon temperature and the temperature dependence of break down voltage, dark counting rate and relative quantum efficiency were presented.

Trigonometric Parallaxes of Four Star-forming Regions in the Distant Inner Galaxy

We have measured trigonometric parallaxes for four water masers associated with distant massive young stars in the inner regions of the Galaxy using the VLBA as part of the BeSSeL Survey. G026.50$+$0.28. is located at the near end of the Galactic bar, perhaps at the origin of the Norma spiral arm. G020.77$-$0.05 is in the Galactic Center region and is likely associated with a far-side extension of the Scutum arm. G019.60$-$0.23 and G020.08$-$0.13 are likely associated and lie well past the Galactic Center. These sources appear to be in the Sagittarius spiral arm, but an association with the Perseus arm cannot be ruled out.

Local spiral structure based on the Gaia EDR3 parallaxes

Context. The astrometric satellite Gaia is expected to significantly increase our knowledge as to the properties of the Milky Way. The Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) provides the most precise parallaxes for many OB stars, which can be used to delineate the Galactic spiral structure. Aims. We investigate the local spiral structure with the largest sample of spectroscopically confirmed young OB stars available to date, and we compare it with what was traced by the parallax measurements of masers. Methods. A sample consisting of three different groups of massive young stars, including O-B2 stars, O-B0 stars and O-type stars with parallax accuracies better than 10% was compiled and used in our analysis. Results. The local spiral structures in all four Galactic quadrants within $\approx$5 kpc of the Sun are clearly delineated in detail. The revealed Galactic spiral pattern outlines a clear sketch of nearby spiral arms, especially in the third and fourth quadrants where the maser parallax data are still absent. These O-type stars densify and extend the spiral structure constructed by using the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) maser data alone. The clumped distribution of O-type stars also indicates that the Galaxy spiral structure is inhomogeneous.
