Dirac spectrum and chiral condensate for QCD at fixed $θ$-angle

We analyze the mass dependence of the chiral condensate for QCD at nonzero $θ$-angle and find that in general the discontinuity of the chiral condensate is not on the support of the Dirac spectrum. To understand this behavior we decompose the spectral density and the chiral condensate into contributions from the zero modes, the quenched part, and a remainder which is sensitive to the fermion determinant and is referred to as the dynamical part. We obtain general formulas for the contributions of the zero modes. Expressions for the quenched part, valid for an arbitrary number of flavors, and for the dynamical part, valid for one and two flavors, are derived in the microscopic domain of QCD. We find that at nonzero $θ$-angle the quenched and dynamical part of the Dirac spectral density are strongly oscillating with an amplitude that increases exponentially with the volume $V$ and a period of order of $1/V$. The quenched part of the chiral condensate becomes exponentially large at $θ\ne0$, but this divergence is canceled by the contribution from the zero modes. The oscillatory behavior of the dynamical part of the density is essential for moving the discontinuity of the chiral condensate away from the support of the Dirac spectrum. As important by-products of this work we obtain analytical expressions for the microscopic spectral density of the Dirac operator at nonzero $θ$-angle for both one- and two-flavor QCD with nonzero quark masses.

Complex Langevin Simulation of a Random Matrix Model at Nonzero Chemical Potential

In this paper we test the complex Langevin algorithm for numerical simulations of a random matrix model of QCD with a first order phase transition to a phase of finite baryon density. We observe that a naive implementation of the algorithm leads to phase quenched results, which were also derived analytically in this article. We test several fixes for the convergence issues of the algorithm, in particular the method of gauge cooling, the shifted representation, the deformation technique and reweighted complex Langevin, but only the latter method reproduces the correct analytical results in the region where the quark mass is inside the domain of the eigenvalues. In order to shed more light on the issues of the methods we also apply them to a similar random matrix model with a milder sign problem and no phase transition, and in that case gauge cooling cooling solves the convergence problems as was shown before in the literature.

Bosonic Partition Functions at Nonzero (Imaginary) Chemical Potential

We consider bosonic random matrix partition functions at nonzero chemical potential and compare the chiral condensate, the baryon number density and the baryon number susceptibility to the result of the corresponding fermionic partition function. We find that as long as results are finite, the phase transition of the fermionic theory persists in the bosonic theory. However, in case that bosonic partition function diverges and has to be regularized, the phase transition of the fermionic theory does not occur in the bosonic theory, and the bosonic theory is always in the broken phase.

Bosonic Partition Functions

The behavior of quenched Dirac spectra of two-dimensional lattice QCD is consistent with spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking which is forbidden according to the Coleman-Mermin-Wagner theorem. One possible resolution of this paradox is that, because of the bosonic determinant in the partially quenched partition function, the conditions of this theorem are violated allowing for spontaneous symmetry breaking in two dimensions or less. This goes back to work by Niedermaier and Seiler on nonamenable symmetries of the hyperbolic spin chain and earlier work by two of the auhtors on bosonic partition functions at nonzero chemical potential. In this talk we discuss chiral symmetry breaking for the bosonic partition function of QCD at nonzero isospin chemical potential and a bosonic random matrix theory at imaginary chemical potential and compare the results with the fermionic counterpart. In both cases the chiral symmetry group of the bosonic partition function is noncompact.

Distribution of Canonical Determinants in QCD

The distribution of canonical determinants in QCD is determined by means of chiral perturbation theory. For a non-zero quark charge the canonical determinants take complex values. In the dilute pion gas approximation, we compute all moments of the magnitude of the canonical determinants, as well as the first nonvanishing moments of the real and imaginary parts. The non-trivial cancellation between the real and the imaginary parts of the canonical determinants is derived and the signal to noise ratio is discussed. The analytical distributions are compared to lattice data. The average density of the magnitude of the canonical determinants is determined as well and is shown to be given by a variant of the log-normal distribution.

Phase Diagram of Wilson and Twisted Mass Fermions at finite isospin chemical potential

Wilson Fermions with untwisted and twisted mass are widely used in lattice simulations. Therefore one important question is whether the twist angle and the lattice spacing affect the phase diagram. We briefly report on the study of the phase diagram of QCD in the parameter space of the degenerate quark masses, isospin chemical potential, lattice spacing, and twist angle by employing chiral perturbation theory. Moreover we calculate the pion masses and their dependence on these four parameters.

The gradient flow of the Dirac spectrum

We construct chiral perturbation theory for the gradient flow of the microscopic Dirac eigenvalues and compute the density of and correlations between the microscopic eigenvalues at zero and non-zero flow time. The results show that the repulsion of the microscopic Dirac eigenvalues from the dynamical quark mass decreases with increasing gradient flow time. Furthermore, the flow of the spectral resolvent is compared to the flow of the chiral condensate obtained from a fermionic gradient flow.

Dirac spectrum of one-flavor QCD at θ=0 and continuity of the chiral condensate

We derive exact analytical expressions for the spectral density of the Dirac operator at fixed θ-angle in the microscopic domain of one-flavor QCD. These results are obtained by performing the sum over topological sectors using novel identities involving sums of products of Bessel functions. Because the fermion determinant is not positive definite for negative quark mass, the usual Banks-Casher relation is not valid and has to be replaced by a different mechanism first observed for QCD at nonzero chemical potential. Using the exact results for the spectral density we explain how this mechanism results in a chiral condensate that remains constant when the quark mass changes sign.

Subsets and the canonical partition functions

We explain the physical nature of the subset solution to the sign problem in chiral random matrix theory: The subset sum is shown to project out the canonical determinant with zero quark charge from a given configuration. As the grand canonical chiral random matrix partition function is independent of the chemical potential, the zero quark charge sector provides the full result.

The Realization of the Sharpe-Singleton Scenario

The microscopic spectral density of the Wilson Dirac operator for two flavor lattice QCD is analyzed. The computation includes the leading order a^2 corrections of the chiral Lagrangian in the microscopic limit. The result is used to demonstrate how the Sharpe-Singleton first order scenario is realized in terms of the eigenvalues of the Wilson Dirac operator. We show that the Sharpe-Singleton scenario only takes place in the theory with dynamical fermions whereas the Aoki phase can be realized in the quenched as well as the unquenched theory. Moreover, we give constraints imposed by gamma_5-Hermiticity on the additional low energy constants of Wilson chiral perturbation theory.

The Microscopic Twisted Mass Dirac Spectrum

The microscopic spectral density for lattice QCD with two flavors and maximally twisted mass is computed. The results are given for fixed index of the Dirac operator and include the leading order $a^2$ corrections to the chiral Lagrangian due to the discretization errors. The computation is carried out within the framework of Wilson chiral perturbation theory.

Progress on the Microscopic Spectrum of the Dirac Operator for QCD with Wilson Fermions

Starting from the chiral Lagrangian for Wilson fermions at nonzero lattice spacing we have obtained compact expressions for all spectral correlation functions of the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator in the $ε$-domain of QCD with dynamical quarks. We have also obtained the distribution of the chiralities over the real eigenvalues of the Wilson Dirac operator for any number of flavors. All results have been derived for a fixed index of the Dirac operator. An important effect of dynamical quarks is that they completely suppress the inverse square root singularity in the spectral density of the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator. The analytical results are given in terms of an integral over a diffusion kernel for which the square of the lattice spacing plays the role of time. This approach greatly simplifies the expressions which we here reduce to the evaluation of two-dimensional integrals.

The Wilson Dirac Spectrum for QCD with Dynamical Quarks

All microscopic correlation functions of the spectrum of the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator with any number of flavors with equal masses are computed. In particular, we give explicit results for the spectral density in the physical case with two light quark flavors. The results include the leading effect in the discretization error and are given for fixed index of the Wilson Dirac operator. They have been obtained starting from chiral Lagrangians for the generating function of the Dirac spectrum. Microscopic correlation functions of the real eigenvalues of the Wilson Dirac operator are computed following the same approach.

Spectrum of the Wilson Dirac Operator at Finite Lattice Spacings

We consider the effect of discretization errors on the microscopic spectrum of the Wilson Dirac operator using both chiral Perturbation Theory and chiral Random Matrix Theory. A graded chiral Lagrangian is used to evaluate the microscopic spectral density of the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator as well as the distribution of the chirality over the real eigenvalues of the Wilson Dirac operator. It is shown that a chiral Random Matrix Theory for the Wilson Dirac operator reproduces the leading zero-momentum terms of Wilson chiral Perturbation Theory. All results are obtained for fixed index of the Wilson Dirac operator. The low-energy constants of Wilson chiral Perturbation theory are shown to be constrained by the Hermiticity properties of the Wilson Dirac operator.

How the Quark Number fluctuates in QCD at small chemical potential

We discuss the distribution of the quark number over the gauge fields for QCD at nonzero quark chemical potential. As the quark number operator is non-hermitian, the distribution is over the complex plane. Moreover, because of the fermion determinant, the distribution is not real and positive. The computation is carried out within leading order chiral perturbation theory and gives direct insight into the delicate cancellations that take place in contributions to the total baryon number.

Wilson Fermions, Random Matrix Theory and the Aoki Phase

The QCD partition function for the Wilson Dirac operator, $D_W$, at nonzero lattice spacing $a$ can be expressed in terms of a chiral Lagrangian as a systematic expansion in the quark mass, the momentum and $a^2$. Starting from this chiral Lagrangian we obtain an analytical expression for the spectral density of $γ_5 (D_W+m)$ in the microscopic domain. It is shown that the $γ_5$-Hermiticity of the Dirac operator necessarily leads to a coefficient of the $a^2$ term that is consistent with the existence of an Aoki phase. The transition to the Aoki phase is explained, and the interplay of the index of $D_W$ and nonzero $a$ is discussed. We formulate a random matrix theory for the Wilson Dirac operator with index $ν$ (which, in the continuum limit, becomes equal to the topological charge of gauge field configurations). It is shown by an explicit calculation that this random matrix theory reproduces the $a^2$-dependence of the chiral Lagrangian in the microscopic domain, and that the sign of the $a^2$-term is directly related to the $γ_5$-Hermiticity of $D_W$.

Effects of dynamical quarks on the spectrum of the Wilson Dirac operator

Effects of dynamical quarks on the microscopic spectrum of the Wilson Dirac operator are analyzed by means of effective field theory. We consider the distributions of the real modes of the Wilson Dirac operator as well as the spectrum of the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator, and work out the case of one flavor in all detail. In contrast to the quenched case, the theory has a mild sign problem that manifests itself by giving a spectral density that is not positive definite as the spectral gap closes.

Microscopic Spectrum of the Wilson Dirac Operator

We calculate the leading contribution to the spectral density of the Wilson Dirac operator using chiral perturbation theory where volume and lattice spacing corrections are given by universal scaling functions. We find analytical expressions for the spectral density on the scale of the average level spacing, and introduce a chiral Random Matrix Theory that reproduces these results. Our work opens up a novel approach to the infinite volume limit of lattice gauge theory at finite lattice spacing and new ways to extract coefficients of Wilson chiral perturbation theory.
