Ground state of a mixture of SU($3$) fermions and scalar bosons

We explore a system composed of scalar bosons and SU($3$) fermions in one dimension. Considering only local intra- and interspecies interactions, the system is described by the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian, which is studied using the density matrix renormalization group method. In addition to the common gapless and mixed Mott insulator phases, we identify unknown gapped states, in which bosons couple with some or all flavors of fermions. We unveil different flavor-selective states characterized by itinerant fermions that coexist with an insulator state where the bosons tie with only one- or two-flavor fermions. The states reported here could be implemented in cold-atoms experiments.

Spin-selective insulators in Bose-Fermi mixtures

We investigate an imbalanced mixture composed of two-color fermions and scalar bosons in the hard-core limit, considering repulsive and attractive interspecies and intraspecies interactions. The interplay between commensurability, repulsive interactions and imbalance generates three insulating phases: a mixed Mott state and two spin-selective insulators characterized by the commensurability relations $ρ_B+ρ^{\uparrow,(\downarrow)}_F=1$. For an attractive coupling between fermions and bosons, we found the relations $ρ_B-ρ^{\uparrow,(\downarrow)}_F=0$ for the spin-selective insulators. State-of-the-art cold-atoms setups constitute ideal platforms to implement these unveiled insulating states and verify their commensurability relations.

Rényi Entropy Singularities as Signatures of Topological Criticality in Coupled Photon-Fermion Systems

We show that the topological phase transition for a Kitaev chain embedded in a cavity can be identified by measuring experimentally accessible photon observables such as the Fano factor and the cavity quadrature amplitudes. Moreover, based on density matrix renormalization group numerical calculations, endorsed by an analytical Gaussian approximation for the cavity state, we propose a direct link between those observables and quantum entropy singularities. We study two bipartite entanglement measures, the von Neumann and Rényi entanglement entropies, between light and matter subsystems. Even though both display singularities at the topological phase transition points, remarkably only the Rényi entropy can be analytically connected to the measurable Fano factor. Consequently, we show a method to recover the bipartite entanglement of the system from a cavity observable. Thus, we put forward a path to experimentally access the control and detection of a topological quantum phase transition via the Rényi entropy, which can be measured by standard low noise linear amplification techniques in superconducting circuits. In this way, the main quantum information features of Majorana polaritons in photon-fermion systems can be addressed in feasible experimental setups.

Mixture of scalar bosons and two-color fermions in one dimension: Superfluid-insulator transitions

Superfluid-insulator transitions in a one-dimensional mixture of two-color fermions and scalar bosons are studied within the framework of the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model. Zero-temperature phase diagrams are constructed for repulsive intraspecies interactions and attractive or repulsive interspecies couplings. In addition to the trivial Mott insulator phases, we report the emergence of new non-trivial insulator phases that depend on the sign of the boson-fermion interaction. These non-trivial insulator phases satisfy the conditions $ρ_B\pmρ_F=n$ and $ρ_B\pm \tfrac{1}{2}ρ_F=n$, with the plus (minus) sign for repulsive (attractive) interactions and $n$ an integer. Far from fermionic half-filling, the boson-fermion interaction drives a gapless-gapped transition in the spin sector. Our findings could be observed experimentally in state-of-the-art cold-atom setups.

Insulator phases of a mixture of spinor fermions and hard-core bosons

We study numerically a one-dimensional mixture of spin-$\tfrac{1}{2}$ fermions and scalar bosons in the hard-core limit. Considering repulsive fermion-fermion and boson-fermion interactions, we find superfluid and insulator states whose phase diagram is calculated. We determine that given a fermionic density $ρ_F$, the insulator states are located at the bosonic densities $ρ_B=1-ρ_F$ and $ρ_B=1-\tfrac{1}{2}ρ_F$, and emerge even in the absence of fermion-fermion coupling. In addition, the boson-fermion repulsion drives quantum phase transitions inside the insulator lobes with $ρ_B=1/2$. Our predictions could be observed in current cold-atom experimental platforms.

Enhancing violations of Leggett-Garg inequalities in nonequilibrium correlated many-body systems by interactions and decoherence

We identify different schemes to enhance the violation of Leggett-Garg inequalities in open many-body systems. Considering a nonequilibrium archetypical setup of quantum transport, we show that particle interactions control the direction and amplitude of maximal violation and that in the strongly-interacting and strongly-driven regime bulk dephasing enhances the violation. Through an analytical study of a minimal model, we unravel the basic ingredients to explain this decoherence-enhanced quantumness, illustrating that such an effect emerges in a wide variety of systems.

Exciton transport enhancement across quantum Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattices with quartic nonlinearity

In the present work we discuss the propagation of excitons across a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice, which possesses both harmonic oscillations and weak quartic anharmonicities. When quantizing these vibrational degrees of freedom we identify several phonon-conserving nonlinearities, each one with a different impact on the excitonic transport. Our analysis identifies a dominant nonlinear correction to the phonon hopping which leads to a strong enhancement of exciton conduction compared to a purely linear vibrational dynamics. Thus quartic lattice nonlinearities can be exploited to induce transitions from localized to delocalized transport, even for very weak amplitudes.

Universal two-time correlations, out-of-time-ordered correlators and Leggett-Garg inequality violation by edge Majorana fermion qubits

In the present work we propose that two-time correlations of Majorana edge localized fermions constitute a novel and versatile toolbox for assessing the topological phases of 1D open lattices. Using analytical and numerical calculations on the Kitaev model, we uncover universal relationships between the decay of the short-time correlations and a particular family of out-of-time-ordered correlators, which provide direct experimental alternatives to the quantitative analysis of the system regime, either normal or topological. Furthermore we show that the saturation of two-time correlations possesses features of an order parameter. Finally, we find that violations of Leggett-Garg inequalities can indicate the topological-normal phase transition by looking at different qubits formed by pairing local and non-local edge Majorana fermions.

Dynamics of Entanglement and the Schmidt Gap in a Driven Light-Matter System

The ability to modify light-matter coupling in time (e.g. using external pulses) opens up the exciting possibility of generating and probing new aspects of quantum correlations in many-body light-matter systems. Here we study the impact of such a pulsed coupling on the light-matter entanglement in the Dicke model as well as the respective subsystem quantum dynamics. Our dynamical many-body analysis exploits the natural partition between the radiation and matter degrees of freedom, allowing us to explore time-dependent intra-subsystem quantum correlations by means of squeezing parameters, and the inter-subsystem Schmidt gap for different pulse duration (i.e. ramping velocity) regimes -- from the near adiabatic to the sudden quench limits. Our results reveal that both types of quantities indicate the emergence of the superradiant phase when crossing the quantum critical point. In addition, at the end of the pulse light and matter remain entangled even though they become uncoupled, which could be exploited to generate entangled states in non-interacting systems.

Transport enhancement from incoherent coupling between one-dimensional quantum conductors

We study the non-equilibrium transport properties of a highly anisotropic two-dimensional lattice of spin-1/2 particles governed by a Heisenberg XXZ Hamiltonian. The anisotropy of the lattice allows us to approximate the system at finite temperature as an array of incoherently coupled one-dimensional chains. We show that in the regime of strong intrachain interactions, the weak interchain coupling considerably boosts spin transport in the driven system. Interestingly, we show that this enhancement increases with the length of the chains, which is related to superdiffusive spin transport. We describe the mechanism behind this effect, compare it to a similar phenomenon in single chains induced by dephasing, and explain why the former is much stronger.

Beyond mean-field bistability in driven-dissipative lattices: bunching-antibunching transition and quantum simulation

In the present work we investigate the existence of multiple nonequilibrium steady states in a coherently driven XY lattice of dissipative two-level systems. A commonly used mean-field ansatz, in which spatial correlations are neglected, predicts a bistable behavior with a sharp shift between low- and high-density states. In contrast one-dimensional matrix product methods reveal these effects to be artifacts of the mean-field approach, with both disappearing once correlations are taken fully into account. Instead, a bunching-antibunching transition emerges. This indicates that alternative approaches should be considered for higher spatial dimensions, where classical simulations are currently infeasible. Thus we propose a circuit QED quantum simulator implementable with current technology to enable an experimental investigation of the model considered.

Quantum Phase Transitions detected by a local probe using Time Correlations and Violations of Leggett-Garg Inequalities

In the present paper we introduce a way of identifying quantum phase transitions of many-body systems by means of local time correlations and Leggett-Garg inequalities. This procedure allows to experimentally determine the quantum critical points not only of finite-order transitions but also those of infinite order, as the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition that is not always easy to detect with current methods. By means of simple analytical arguments for a general spin-$1 / 2$ Hamiltonian, and matrix product simulations of one-dimensional $X X Z$ and anisotropic $X Y$ models, we argue that finite-order quantum phase transitions can be determined by singularities of the time correlations or their derivatives at criticality. The same features are exhibited by corresponding Leggett-Garg functions, which noticeably indicate violation of the Leggett-Garg inequalities for early times and all the Hamiltonian parameters considered. In addition, we find that the infinite-order transition of the $X X Z$ model at the isotropic point can be revealed by the maximal violation of the Leggett-Garg inequalities. We thus show that quantum phase transitions can be identified by purely local measurements, and that many-body systems constitute important candidates to observe experimentally the violation of Leggett-Garg inequalities.

Coexistence of energy diffusion and local thermalization in nonequilibrium XXZ spin chains with integrability breaking

In this work we analyze the simultaneous emergence of diffusive energy transport and local thermalization in a nonequilibrium one-dimensional quantum system, as a result of integrability breaking. Specifically, we discuss the local properties of the steady state induced by thermal boundary driving in a XXZ spin chain with staggered magnetic field. By means of efficient large-scale matrix product simulations of the equation of motion of the system, we calculate its steady state in the long-time limit. We start by discussing the energy transport supported by the system, finding it to be ballistic in the integrable limit and diffusive when the staggered field is finite. Subsequently, we examine the reduced density operators of neighboring sites and find that for large systems they are well approximated by local thermal states of the underlying Hamiltonian in the nonintegrable regime, even for weak staggered fields. In the integrable limit, on the other hand, this behavior is lost, and the identification of local temperatures is no longer possible. Our results agree with the intuitive connection between energy diffusion and thermalization.

Dephasing enhanced transport in nonequilibrium strongly correlated quantum systems

A key insight from recent studies is that noise, such as dephasing, can improve the efficiency of quantum transport by suppressing coherent single-particle interference effects. However, it is not yet clear whether dephasing can enhance transport in an interacting many-body system. Here, we address this question by analyzing the transport properties of a boundary driven spinless fermion chain with nearest-neighbor interactions subject to bulk dephasing. The many-body nonequilibrium stationary state is determined using large-scale matrix product simulations of the corresponding quantum master equation. We find dephasing enhanced transport only in the strongly interacting regime, where it is shown to induce incoherent transitions bridging the gap between bound dark states and bands of mobile eigenstates. The generic nature of the transport enhancement is illustrated by a simple toy model, which contains the basic elements required for its emergence. Surprisingly, the effect is significant even in the linear response regime of the full system, and it is predicted to exist for any large and finite chain. The response of the system to dephasing also establishes a signature of an underlying nonequilibrium phase transition between regimes of transport degradation and enhancement. The existence of this transition is shown not to depend on the integrability of the model considered. As a result, dephasing enhanced transport is expected to persist in more realistic nonequilibrium strongly correlated systems.

An Explicit Bound for Dynamical Localisation in an Interacting Many-Body System

We characterise and study dynamical localisation of a finite interacting quantum many-body system. We present explicit bounds on the disorder strength required for the onset of localisation of the dynamics of arbitrary ensemble of sites of the XYZ spin-1/2 model. We obtain these results using a novel form of the fractional moment criterion, which we establish, together with a generalisation of the self-avoiding walk representation of the system Green's functions, called path-sums. These techniques are not specific to the XYZ model and hold in a much more general setting. We further present bounds for two observable quantities in the localised regime: the magnetisation of any sublattice of the system as well as the linear magnetic response function of the system. We confirm our results through numerical simulations.

Heat transport in the $XXZ$ spin chain: from ballistic to diffusive regimes and dephasing enhancement

In this work we study the heat transport in an XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with homogeneous magnetic field, incoherently driven out of equilibrium by reservoirs at the boundaries. We focus on the effect of bulk dephasing (energy-dissipative) processes in different parameter regimes of the system. The non-equilibrium steady state of the chain is obtained by simulating its evolution under the corresponding Lindblad master equation, using the time evolving block decimation method. In the absence of dephasing, the heat transport is ballistic for weak interactions, while being diffusive in the strongly-interacting regime, as evidenced by the heat-current scaling with the system size. When bulk dephasing takes place in the system, diffusive transport is induced in the weakly-interacting regime, with the heat current monotonically decreasing with the dephasing rate. In contrast, in the strongly-interacting regime, the heat current can be significantly enhanced by dephasing for systems of small size.
