First order transition in a three dimensional disordered system

We present the first detailed numerical study in three dimensions of a first-order phase transition that remains first-order in the presence of quenched disorder (specifically, the ferromagnetic/paramagnetic transition of the site-diluted four states Potts model). A tricritical point, which lies surprisingly near to the pure-system limit and is studied by means of Finite-Size Scaling, separates the first-order and second-order parts of the critical line. This investigation has been made possible by a new definition of the disorder average that avoids the diverging-variance probability distributions that plague the standard approach. Entropy, rather than free energy, is the basic object in this approach that exploits a recently introduced microcanonical Monte Carlo method.

Self-Averaging in the Three Dimensional Site Diluted Heisenberg Model at the critical point

We study the self-averaging properties of the three dimensional site diluted Heisenberg model. The Harris criterion \cite{critharris} states that disorder is irrelevant since the specific heat critical exponent of the pure model is negative. According with some analytical approaches \cite{harris}, this implies that the susceptibility should be self-averaging at the critical temperature ($R_χ=0$). We have checked this theoretical prediction for a large range of dilution (including strong dilution) at critically and we have found that the introduction of scaling corrections is crucial in order to obtain self-averageness in this model. Finally we have computed critical exponents and cumulants which compare very well with those of the pure model supporting the Universality predicted by the Harris criterion.

Simulating spin systems on IANUS, an FPGA-based computer

We describe the hardwired implementation of algorithms for Monte Carlo simulations of a large class of spin models. We have implemented these algorithms as VHDL codes and we have mapped them onto a dedicated processor based on a large FPGA device. The measured performance on one such processor is comparable to O(100) carefully programmed high-end PCs: it turns out to be even better for some selected spin models. We describe here codes that we are currently executing on the IANUS massively parallel FPGA-based system.

Simulations for trapping reactions with subdiffusive traps and subdiffusive particles

While there are many well-known and extensively tested results involving diffusion-limited binary reactions, reactions involving subdiffusive reactant species are far less understood. Subdiffusive motion is characterized by a mean square displacement $ \sim t^γ$ with $0<γ<1$. Recently we calculated the asymptotic survival probability $P(t)$ of a (sub)diffusive particle ($γ^\prime$) surrounded by (sub)diffusive traps ($γ$) in one dimension. These are among the few known results for reactions involving species characterized by different anomalous exponents. Our results were obtained by bounding, above and below, the exact survival probability by two other probabilities that are asymptotically identical (except when $γ^\prime=1$ and $0<γ<2/3$). Using this approach, we were not able to estimate the time of validity of the asymptotic result, nor the way in which the survival probability approaches this regime. Toward this goal, here we present a detailed comparison of the asymptotic results with numerical simulations. In some parameter ranges the asymptotic theory describes the simulation results very well even for relatively short times. However, in other regimes more time is required for the simulation results to approach asymptotic behavior, and we arrive at situations where we are not able to reach asymptotia within our computational means. This is regrettably the case for $γ^\prime=1$ and $0<γ<2/3$, where we are therefore not able to prove or disprove even conjectures about the asymptotic survival probability of the particle.

Numerical Simulations of Random Phase Sine-Gordon Model and Renormalization Group Predictions

Numerical Simulations of the random phase sine-Gordon model suffer from strong finite size effects preventing the non-Gaussian $\log^2 r$ component of the spatial correlator from following the universal infinite volume prediction. We show that a finite size prediction based on perturbative Renormalisation Group (RG) arguments agrees well with new high precision simulations for small coupling and close to the critical temperature.

The target problem with evanescent subdiffusive traps

We calculate the survival probability of a stationary target in one dimension surrounded by diffusive or subdiffusive traps of time-dependent density. The survival probability of a target in the presence of traps of constant density is known to go to zero as a stretched exponential whose specific power is determined by the exponent that characterizes the motion of the traps. A density of traps that grows in time always leads to an asymptotically vanishing survival probability. Trap evanescence leads to a survival probability of the target that may be go to zero or to a finite value indicating a probability of eternal survival, depending on the way in which the traps disappear with time.

Ianus: an Adpative FPGA Computer

Dedicated machines designed for specific computational algorithms can outperform conventional computers by several orders of magnitude. In this note we describe {\it Ianus}, a new generation FPGA based machine and its basic features: hardware integration and wide reprogrammability. Our goal is to build a machine that can fully exploit the performance potential of new generation FPGA devices. We also plan a software platform which simplifies its programming, in order to extend its intended range of application to a wide class of interesting and computationally demanding problems. The decision to develop a dedicated processor is a complex one, involving careful assessment of its performance lead, during its expected lifetime, over traditional computers, taking into account their performance increase, as predicted by Moore's law. We discuss this point in detail.

Phase diagram of the (bosonic) Double-Exchange Model

The phase diagram of the simplest approximation to Double-Exchange systems, the bosonic Double-Exchange model with antiferromagnetic super-exchange coupling, is fully worked out by means of Monte Carlo simulations, large-N expansions and Variational Mean-Field calculations. We find a rich phase diagram, with no first-order phase transitions. The most surprising finding is the existence of a segment like ordered phase at low temperature for intermediate AFM coupling which cannot be detected in neutron-scattering experiments. This is signaled by a maximum (a cusp) in the specific heat. Below the phase-transition, only short-range ordering would be found in neutron-scattering. Researchers looking for a Quantum Critical Point in manganites should be wary of this possibility. Finite-Size Scaling estimates of critical exponents are presented, although large scaling corrections are present in the reachable lattice sizes.

Low Temperature Properties of Finite Dimensional Ising Spin Glasses : (some) Numerical Simulations

We review some recent results on finite dimensional spin glasses by studying recent numerical simulations and their relationship with experiments. In particular we will show results obtained at zero and non zero temperature, focusing in the low temperature properties of the model, and contrast them with different pictures of the low temperature phase of spin glasses: Replica Symmetry Breaking, Droplet Model and Trivial-Not-Trivial Scenario.

Off-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relations in the 3d Ising Spin Glass in a magnetic field

We study the fluctuation-dissipation relations for a three dimensional Ising spin glass in a magnetic field both in the high temperature phase as well as in the low temperature one. In the region of times simulated we have found that our results support a picture of the low temperature phase with broken replica symmetry, but a droplet behavior can not be completely excluded.

Dynamical generation of a gauge symmetry in the Double-Exchange model

It is shown that a bosonic formulation of the double-exchange model, one of the classical models for magnetism, generates dynamically a gauge-invariant phase in a finite region of the phase diagram. We use analytical methods, Monte Carlo simulations and Finite-Size Scaling analysis. We study the transition line between that region and the paramagnetic phase. The numerical results show that this transition line belongs to the Universality Class of the Antiferromagnetic RP(2) model. The fact that one can define a Universality Class for the Antiferromagnetic RP(2) model, different from the one of the O(N) models, is puzzling and somehow contradicts naive expectations about Universality.

Low T Dynamical Properties of Spin Glasses Smoothly Extrapolate to T=0

We compare ground state properties of 3D Ising Spin Glasses with Gaussian couplings with results from off-equilibrium numerical simulations at non zero (but low) temperatures. We find that the non-zero temperature properties of the system smoothly connect to the T=0 behavior, confirming the point of view that results established at T=0 typically also give relevant information about the $T\ne 0$ physics of the system.

Critical Behavior of the Three-Dimensional Ising Spin Glass

We have simulated, using parallel tempering, the three dimensional Ising spin glass model with binary couplings in a helicoidal geometry. The largest lattice (L=20) has been studied using a dedicated computer (the SUE machine). We have obtained, measuring the correlation length in the critical region, a strong evidence for a second-order finite temperature phase transition ruling out other possible scenarios like a Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition. Precise values for the $ν$ and $η$ critical exponents are also presented.

Off-Equilibrium Dynamics at Very Low Temperatures in 3d Spin Glasses

We present a high statistic systematic study of the overlap correlation function well below the critical temperature in the three dimensional Gaussian spin glass. The off-equilibrium correlation function has been studied confirming the power law behavior for the dynamical correlation length. In particular we have computed the dynamical critical exponent $z$ in a wide range of temperatures, $0.35 \le T \le 0.9$, obtaining a dependence $z(T)=6.2/T$ in a very good agreement with recent experiments. Moreover, we report a study of the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for very low temperatures $T=0.5$ and $T=0.35$. All our numerical results avoid a droplet model interpretation even when $T$ is as low as $T=0.35$.

Summability of the perturbative expansion for a zero-dimensional disordered spin model

We show analytically that the perturbative expansion for the free energy of the zero dimensional (quenched) disordered Ising model is Borel-summable in a certain range of parameters, provided that the summation is carried out in two steps: first, in the strength of the original coupling of the Ising model and subsequently in the variance of the quenched disorder. This result is illustrated by some high-precision calculations of the free energy obtained by a straightforward numerical implementation of our sequential summation method.

Study of a microcanonical algorithm on the $\pm J$ spin glass model in d=3

We consider a microcanonical local algorithm to be applied on the $\pm J$ spin glass model. We have compared the results coming from a microcanonical Monte Carlo simulation with those from a canonical one: Thermalization times, spin glass susceptibilities and Binder parameters. For a fixed lattice size we found different results between the two thermodynamic ensembles, which tend to vanish at bigger volumes. Moreover, microcanonical thermalization times are longer than the canonical ones. Finally we have checked that one of the Guerra relations is satisfied with good precision for the two largest lattices.

Effect of Dilution on First Order Transitions: The Three Dimensional Three States Potts Model

We have studied numerically the effect of quenched site dilution on a first order phase transition in three dimensions. We have simulated the site diluted three states Potts model studying in detail the second order region of its phase diagram. We have found that the $ν$ exponent is compatible with the one of the three dimensional diluted Ising model whereas the $η$ exponent is definitely different.
