Large-x Parton Distributions

Reliable knowledge of parton distributions at large x is crucial for many searches for new physics signals in the next generation of collider experiments. Although these are generally well determined in the small and medium x range, it has been shown that their uncertainty grows rapidly for x>0.1. We examine the status of the gluon and quark distributions in light of new questions that have been raised in the past two years about "large-x" parton distributions, as well as recent measurements which have improved the parton uncertainties. Finally, we provide a status report of the data used in the global analysis, and note some of the open issues where future experiments, including those planned for Jefferson Labs, might contribute.

Large-x Parton Distributions

Reliable knowledge of parton distributions at large x is crucial for many searches for new physics signals in the next generation of collider experiments. Although these are generally well determined in the small and medium x range, it has been shown that their uncertainty grows rapidly for x > 0.1. We examine the status of the gluon and quark distributions in light of new questions that have been raised in the past two years about large-x parton distributions, as well as recent measurements which have improved the parton uncertainties. We perform several specific global fits to answer the outstanding questions, and to investigate the potential of future experiments, particularly at HERA, which may provide critical constraints on parton distributions at large x.

Tests of Factorization in Diffractive Charm Production and Double Pomeron Exchange

We present predictions for the diffractive production of heavy quarks in deep-inelastic scattering and hadron-hadron collisions and for double diffractive dijet production in hadron-hadron collisions. With the assumption of hard scattering factorization, the predictions are made using diffractive parton densities that we have previously fitted to HERA data. Comparisons of our predictions with preliminary data from HERA and the Tevatron indicate that factorization is obeyed in diffractive DIS but fails in hadron-induced processes.

The Limiting Curve of Leading Particles from Hadron-Nucleus Collisions at Infinite A

We argue that as the atomic number of the target nucleus $A \to \infty$, the multiplicity of leading particles in hadron-nucleus collisions tends to a finite limit. The limiting multiplicities for various particle production are computed for both proton and pion projectiles. Signatures at finite A are discussed. Data from 100 GeV/c central hadron-nucleus collisions are analyzed and found to be in qualitative agreement with this picture.
