Partial-Wave Analyses of all Proton-Proton and Neutron-Proton Data Below 500 MeV

In 1993 the Nijmegen group published the results of energy-dependent partial-wave analyses (PWAs) of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering data for laboratory kinetic energies below Tlab=350 MeV (PWA93). In this talk some general aspects, but also the newest developments on the Nijmegen NN PWAs are reported. We have almost finished a new energy-dependent PWA and will discuss some typical aspects of this new PWA; where it differs from PWA93, but also what future developments might be, or should be.

Angle-dependent normalization of neutron-proton differential cross sections

Systematic errors in the database of $np$ differential cross sections below 350 MeV are studied. By applying angle-dependent normalizations with the help of the energy-dependent Nijmegen partial-wave analysis PWA93 the $χ^2$-values of some seriously flawed data sets can be reduced significantly at the expense of a few degrees of freedom. It turns out that in these special cases the renormalized data sets can be made statistically acceptable such that they do not have to be discarded any longer in partial-wave analyses of the two-nucleon scattering data.

Determination of the chiral coupling constants c3 and c4 in new pp and np partial-wave analyses

As a first result of two new partial-wave analyses, one of the pp and another one of the np scattering data below 500 MeV, we report a study of the long-range chiral two-pion exchange interaction which contains the chiral coupling constants c1, c3, and c4. By using as input a theoretical value for c1 we are able to determine in pp as well as in np scattering accurate values for c3 and c4. The values determined from the pp data and independently from the np data are in very good agreement, indicating the correctness of the chiral two-pion exchange interaction. The weighted averages are c3 = -4.78(10) / GeV and c4 = 3.96(22) / GeV, where the errors are statistical. The value of c3 is best determined from the pp data and that of c4 from the np data.

Normalization of neutron-proton differential cross sections

The np differential cross section below 350 MeV neutron laboratory energy is studied using the energy-dependent Nijmegen partial-wave analysis PWA93. We analyze in detail three experiments, performed at LAMPF, at TRIUMF, and at the TSL facility in Uppsala. The issue of normalization of $np$ cross sections is discussed, where we distinguish between measured and calculated normalizations. This analysis leads to improved treatments of the LAMPF and TRIUMF data over PWA93. It is shown that the LAMPF and TRIUMF data at Tlab = 212 MeV are in good agreement with PWA93, that the LAMPF data at Tlab = 162 MeV is also in good agreement with PWA93, but that the Uppsala data at 162 MeV is in strong disagreement with PWA93. The reason for the disagreement is, almost certainly, a systematic flaw in the slope of the Uppsala data.

Chiral two-pion exchange and proton-proton partial-wave analysis

The chiral two-pion exchange component of the long-range pp interaction is studied in an energy-dependent partial-wave analysis. We demonstrate its presence and importance, and determine the chiral parameters c_i (i=1,3,4). The values agree well with those obtained from pion-nucleon amplitudes.

Comment on piNN Coupling from High Precision np Charge Exchange at 162 MeV

In this updated and expanded version of our delayed Comment we show that the np backward cross section, as presented by the Uppsala group, is seriously flawed (more than 25 sd.). The main reason is the incorrect normalization of the data. We show also that their extrapolation method, used to determine the charged piNN coupling constant, is a factor of about 10 less accurate than claimed by Ericson et al. The large extrapolation error makes the determination of the coupling constant by the Uppsala group totally uninteresting.

The Status of the Pion-Nucleon Coupling Constant

A review is given of the various determinations of the different piNN coupling constants in analyses of the low-energy pp, np, pbarp, and pi-p scattering data. The most accurate determinations are in the energy-dependent partial-wave analyses of the NN data. The recommended value is f^2 = 0.075 . A recent determination of f^2 by the Uppsala group from backward np cross sections is shown to be model dependent and inaccurate, and therefore completely uninteresting. We also argue that an accurate determination of f^2 using pp forward dispersion relations is not a realistic option.

Electromagnetic Corrections to the One-Pion-Exchange Potential

Leading-order electromagnetic loop corrections to the one-pion-exchange potential are computed within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. These corrections generate an effective nucleon-nucleon potential, $V_{πγ}$, which supplements the sum of OPEP and the nucleon-nucleon Coulomb potential. This potential is charge dependent and its construction is demonstrated to be gauge invariant. The potential $V_{πγ}$ has been included in the Nijmegen partial-wave analysis of np data. A particular renormalization scheme is chosen that leads to a negligible change in the charged-piNN coupling constant and in the np 1S0 scattering length and effective range.

The Low-Energy Neutron-Proton Scattering Parameters and the Deuteron

The low-energy parameters describing the np scattering in the 3S1 + 3D1 partial waves, the deuteron parameters, and their relations are discussed. These parameters can be determined quite accurately in the energy-dependent Nijmegen partial-wave analyses of the np data and are also given by the high-quality Nijmegen potentials. The newest values for these parameters are presented.

Comparison of potential models with the np scattering data below 350 MeV

As a follow-up on our earlier paper we calculate the $χ^{2}$ of various $N\!N$ potential models with respect to the $np$ scattering data. We find that only the most recent potential models give a reasonably good description of these data. Almost none of the potentials is truly an $N\!N$ potential in the sense that it gives a good description of both $pp$ and $np$ scattering simultaneously.

Construction of high-quality Nucleon-Nucleon potential models

We present an updated version (Nijm93) of the Nijmegen soft-core potential, which gives a much better description of the np data than the older version (Nijm78). The chi^2 per datum is 1.87. The configuration-space and momentum-space versions of this potential are exactly equivalent; a unique feature among meson-theoretical potentials. We also present three new NN potential models: a non-local Reid-like Nijmegen potential (NijmI), a local version (NijmII), and an updated regularized version (Reid93) of the Reid soft-core potential. These three potentials all have a nearly optimal chi^2 per datum and can therefore be considered as alternative partial-wave analyses. All potentials contain the proper charge-dependent one-pion-exchange tail. Fortran code for the potentials can be obtained via anonymous ftp from thef-nym.sci.kun.nl

Partial Wave Analyses of the pp data alone and of the np data alone

We present results of the Nijmegen partial-wave analyses of all NN scattering data below Tlab = 500 MeV. We have been able to extract for the first time the important np phase shifts for both I = 0 and I = 1 from the np scattering data alone. This allows us to study the charge independence breaking between the pp and np I = 1 phases. In our analyses we obtain for the pp data chi^2_{min}/Ndf = 1.13 and for the np data chi^2_{min}/Ndf = 1.12.

The One-Boson-Exchange Potential Model Approach

A review is given of the present situation in YN scattering. Special attention is given to the handling of SU(3) in the various meson exchanges. The importance of the almost always ignored contribution of the Pomeron is reiterated.

Antiproton-proton partial-wave analysis below 925 MeV/c

A partial-wave analysis of all antiproton-proton scattering data below 925 MeV/c antiproton laboratory momentum is presented. The method used is adapted from the Nijmegen phase-shift analyses of pp and np scattering data. The Nijmegen 1993 antiproton-proton database, consisting of 3646 antiproton-proton scattering data, is presented and discussed. The best fit to this database results in chi^2_min/Ndata = 1.043. The pseudovector coupling constant of the charged pion to nucleons is determined to be (f_c)^2 = 0.0732(11) at the pion pole, where the error is statistical.

pbarp partial wave analysis and NbarN potentials

Invited talk given at the NAN '93 Conference in Moscow, Russia, sept 1993. A review is given of the different ways to describe pbarp scattering. Next the Nijmegen partial wave analyses of the pbarp data as well as the corresponding Nijmegen NbarN database are discussed. These partial wave analyses are finally used as a tool to construct a better NbarN potential model and also to clarify questions raised in the literature.
