Velocity fluctuations of a piston confining a vibrated granular gas

The steady state velocity fluctuations of a movable piston located on the top of a vibrated granular gas are studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations. From the second moment of the distribution, a temperature parameter for the piston is defined and compared with the granular temperature of the gas located just below it. Then the two temperature parameters refer to two interacting macroscopic systems. The equipartition of energy valid in usual molecular systems is strongly violated, and the temperature of the piston can be larger or smaller than the one of the gas, depending of the parameters defining the system at the particle level. The simulation results for the ratio of temperatures are in agreement with some theoretical predictions from kinetic theory assuming the validity of a hydrodynamic description in the limit of weak inelasticity of the gas.

Shear state of freely evolving granular gases

Hydrodynamic equations are used to identify the final state reached by a freely evolving granular gas above but close to its shear instability. The theory predicts the formation of a two bands shear state with a steady density profile. There is a modulation between temperature and density profiles as a consequence of the energy balance, the density fluctuations remaining small, without producing clustering. Moreover, the time dependence of the velocity field can be scaled out with the squared root of the average temperature of the system. The latter follows the Haff law, but with an effective cooling rate that is smaller than that of the free homogeneous state. The theoretical predictions are compared with numerical results for inelastic hard disks obtained by using the direct Monte Carlo simulation method, and a good agreement is obtained for low inelasticity.

Kinetic Theory of Response Functions for the Hard Sphere Granular Fluid

The response functions for small spatial perturbations of a homogeneous granular fluid have been described recently. In appropriate dimensionless variables, they have the form of stationary state time correlation functions. Here, these functions are expressed in terms of reduced single particle functions that are expected to obey a linear kinetic equation. The functional assumption required for such a kinetic equation, and a Markov approximation for its implementation are discussed. If, in addition, static velocity correlations are neglected, a granular fluid version of the linearized Enskog kinetic theory is obtained. The derivation makes no a priori limitation on the density, space and time scale, nor degree of inelasticity. As an illustration, recently derived Helfand and Green-Kubo expressions for the Navier-Stokes order transport coefficients are evaluated with this kinetic theory. The results are in agreement with those obtained from the Chapman-Enskog solution to the nonlinear Enskog kinetic equation.

Average energy and fluctuations of a granular gas in the threshold of the clustering instability

The behavior of an isolated dilute granular gas near the threshold of its clustering instability is investigated by means of fluctuating hydrodynamics and the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. The theoretical predictions from the former are shown to be in good agreement with the simulation results. The total energy of the the system is renormalized by the fluctuations of the vorticity field. Moreover, the scaled second moment of the energy fluctuations exhibits a power-law divergent behavior

Symmetry breaking and clustering in a vibrated granular gas with several macroscopically connected compartments

The spontaneous symmetry breaking in a vibro-fluidized low-density granular gas in three connected compartments is investigated. When the total number of particles in the system becomes large enough, particles distribute themselves unequally among the three compartments. Particles tend to concentrate in one of the compartments, the other two having the (relatively small) same average number of particles. A hydrodynamical model that accurately predicts the bifurcation diagram of the system is presented. The theory can be easily extended to the case of an arbitrary number of connected compartments.

Linear Response and Hydrodynamics for Granular Fluids

A formal derivation of linear hydrodynamics for a granular fluid is given. The linear response to small spatial perturbations of the homogeneous reference state is studied in detail using methods of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. A transport matrix for macroscopic excitations in the fluid is defined in terms of the response functions. An expansion in the wavevector to second order allows identification of all phenomenological susceptibilities and transport coefficients through Navier-Stokes order, in terms of appropriate time correlation functions. The transport coefficients in this representation are the generalization to granular fluids of the familiar Helfand and Green-Kubo relations for normal fluids. The analysis applies to a wide range of collision rules. Important differences in both the analysis and results from those for normal fluids are identified and discussed. A scaling limit is described corresponding to the conditions under which idealized inelastic hard sphere models can apply. Further details and interpretation are provided in the paper following this one, by specialization to the case of smooth, inelastic hard spheres with constant coefficient of restitution.

Transport Coefficients for the Hard Sphere Granular Fluid

In the preceding paper, linear response methods have been applied to obtain formally exact expressions for the parameters of Navier-Stokes order hydrodynamics. The analysis there is general, applying to both normal and granular fluids with a wide range of collision rules. Those results are specialized here to the case of smooth, inelastic hard spheres with constant coefficient of normal restitution, for further elaboration. Explicit expressions for the cooling rate, pressure, and the transport coefficients are given and compared with the corresponding expressions for a system of elastic hard spheres. The scope of the results for further analytical explorations and possible numerical evaluation is discussed.

Hydrodynamic profiles for an impurity in a open vibrated granular gas

The hydrodynamic state of an impurity immersed in a low density granular gas is analyzed. Explicit expressions for the temperature and density fields of the impurity in terms of the hydrodynamic fields of the gas are derived. It is shown that the ratio between the temperatures of the two components, measuring the departure from energy equipartition, only depends on the mechanical properties of the particles, being therefore constant in the bulk of the system. This ratio plays an important role in determining the density profile of the intruder and its position with respect to the gas, since it determines the sign of the pressure diffusion coefficient. The theoretical predictions are compared with molecular dynamics simulation results for the particular case of the steady state of an open vibrated granular system in absence of macroscopic fluxes, and a satisfactory agreement is found.

Transport coefficients for dense hard-disk systems

A study of the transport coefficients of a system of elastic hard disks, based on the use of Helfand-Einstein expressions is reported. The self-diffusion, the viscosity, and the heat conductivity are examined with averaging techniques especially appropriate for the use in event-driven molecular dynamics algorithms with periodic boundary conditions. The density and size dependence of the results is analyzed, and comparison with the predictions from Enskog's theory is carried out. In particular, the behavior of the transport coefficients in the vicinity of the fluid-solid transition is investigated and a striking power law divergence of the viscosity in this region is obtained, while all other examined transport coefficients show a drop in that density range.

Mesoscopic Theory of Critical Fluctuations in Isolated Granular Gases

Fluctuating hydrodynamics is used to describe the total energy fluctuations of a freely evolving gas of inelastic hard spheres near the threshold of the clustering instability. They are shown to be governed by vorticity fluctuations only, that also lead to a renormalization of the average total energy. The theory predicts a power-law divergent behavior of the scaled second moment of the fluctuations, and a scaling property of their probability distribution, both in agreement with simulations results. A more quantitative comparison between theory and simulation for the critical amplitudes and the form of the scaling function is also carried out.

Linear Response for Granular Fluids

The linear response of an isolated, homogeneous granular fluid to small spatial perturbations is studied by methods of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. The long wavelength linear hydrodynamic equations are obtained, with formally exact expressions for the susceptibilities and transport coefficients. The latter are given in equivalent Einstein-Helfand and Green-Kubo forms. The context of these results and their contrast with corresponding results for normal fluids are discussed.

Energy partition and segregation for an intruder in a vibrated granular system under gravity

The difference of temperatures between an impurity and the surrounding gas in an open vibrated granular system is studied. It is shown that, in spite of the high inhomogeneity of the state, the temperature ratio remains constant in the bulk of the system. The lack of energy equipartition is associated to the change of sign of the pressure diffusion coefficient for the impurity at certain values of the parameters of the system, leading to a segregation criterium. The theoretical predictions are consistent with previous experimental results, and also in agreement with molecular dynamics simulation results reported in this paper.

Hydrodynamic Modes for a Granular Gas from Kinetic Theory

Small perturbations of the homogeneous cooling state (HCS) for a low density granular gas are described by means of the linearized Boltzmann equation. The spectrum of the generator for this dynamics is shown to contain points corresponding to hydrodynamic excitations. The corresponding eigenvectors and eigenvalues are calculated to Navier-Stokes order and shown to agree with those obtained by the Chapman-Enskog method. The conditions for the hydrodynamic excitations to dominate all other excitations are discussed.

Scaling and universality of critical fluctuations in granular gases

The global energy fluctuations of a low density gas granular gas in the homogeneous cooling state near its clustering instability are studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The relative dispersion of the fluctuations is shown to exhibit a power-law divergent behavior. Moreover, the probability distribution of the fluctuations presents data collapse as the system approaches the instability, for different values of the inelasticity. The function describing the collapse turns out to be the same as the one found in several molecular equilibrium and non-equilibrium systems, except for the change in the sign of the fluctuations.

Hydrodynamic modes, Green-Kubo relations, and velocity correlations in dilute granular gases

It is shown that the hydrodynamic modes of a dilute granular gas of inelastic hard spheres can be identified, and calculated in the long wavelength limit. Assuming they dominate at long times, formal expressions for the Navier-Stokes transport coefficients are derived. They can be expressed in a form that generalizes the Green-Kubo relations for molecular systems, and it is shown that they can also be evaluated by means of $N$-particle simulation methods. The form of the hydrodynamic modes to zeroth order in the gradients is used to detect the presence of inherent velocity correlations in the homogeneous cooling state, even in the low density limit. They manifest themselves in the fluctuations of the total energy of the system. The theoretical predictions are shown to be in agreement with molecular dynamics simulations. Relevant related questions deserving further attention are pointed out.

Origins of Hydrodynamics for a Granular Gas

The basis for a hydrodynamic description of granular gases is discussed for a low density gas of smooth, inelastic hard spheres. The more fundamental mesoscopic description is taken to be the nonlinear Boltzmann kinetic equation. Two arguments are presented in favor of a hydrodynamics for granular gases. The first one is the concept of a "normal" solution and its explicit approximate construction via the Chapman-Enskog method. The second is the demonstration of hydrodynamic modes in the spectrum of the generator for the dynamics of small spatial perturbations of the homogeneous reference state. In the first case, a derivation of the nonlinear hydrodynamic equations is given to Navier-Stokes order, with explicit expressions for the transport coefficients. The approach is formal and the context of the derivation is left unspecified, although internal mathematically consistency is demonstrated. The second method is more restricted, leading only to linearized hydrodynamics, but with the potential to define more sharply the context of hydrodynamics.

Steady state representation of the homogeneous cooling state of a granular gas

The properties of a dilute granular gas in the homogeneous cooling state are mapped to those of a stationary state by means of a change in the time scale that does not involve any internal property of the system. The new representation is closely related with a general property of the granular temperature in the long time limit. The physical and practical implications of the mapping are discussed. In particular, simulation results obtained by the direct simulation Monte Carlo method applied to the scaled dynamics are reported. This includes ensemble averages and also the velocity autocorrelation function, as well as the self-diffusion coefficient obtained from the latter by means of the Green-Kubo representation. In all cases, the obtained results are compared with theoretical predictions.

On the validity of the Boltzmann equation to describe low density granular systems

The departure of a granular gas in the instable region of parameters from the initial homogeneous cooling state is studied. Results from Molecular Dynamics and from Direct Monte Carlo simulation of the Boltzmann equation are compared. It is shown that the Boltzmann equation accurately predicts the low density limit of the system. The relevant role played by the parallelization of the velocities as time proceeds and the dependence of this effect on the density is analyzed in detail.
