Dynamical Triangulations, a Gateway to Quantum Gravity ?

We show how it is possible to formulate Euclidean two-dimensional quantum gravity as the scaling limit of an ordinary statistical system by means of dynamical triangulations, which can be viewed as a discretization in the space of equivalence classes of metrics. Scaling relations exist and the critical exponents have simple geometric interpretations. Hartle-Hawkings wave functionals as well as reparametrization invariant correlation functions which depend on the geodesic distance can be calculated. The discretized approach makes sense even in higher dimensional space-time. Although analytic solutions are still missing in the higher dimensional case, numerical studies reveal an interesting structure and allow the identification of a fixed point where we can hope to define a genuine non-perturbative theory of four-dimensional quantum gravity.

Computational Ergodicity of $s^4$

It is known that there are four-manifolds which are not algorithmically recognizable. This implies that there exist triangulations of these manifolds which are separated by large barriers from the point of view of the computer algorithm. We have not observed these barriers for triangulations of $S^4$.

Search for Scaling Dimensions for Random Surfaces with c=1

We study numerically the fractal structure of the intrinsic geometry of random surfaces coupled to matter fields with $c=1$. Using baby universe surgery it was possible to simulate randomly triangulated surfaces made of 260.000 triangles. Our results are consistent with the theoretical prediction $d_H = 2+\sqrt{2}$ for the intrinsic Hausdorff dimension.

A Random Surface Theory with Non-Trivial $γ_{string}$

We measure by Monte Carlo simulations $\g_{string}$ for a model of random surfaces embedded in three dimensional Euclidean space-time. The action of the string is the usual Polyakov action plus an extrinsic curvature term. The system undergoes a phase transition at a finite value $ł_c$ of the extrinsic curvature coupling and at the transition point the numerically measured value of $\g_{string}(ł_c) \approx 0.27\pm 0.06$. This is consistent with $\g_{string}(ł_c)=1/4$, i.e. equal to the first of the non-trivial values of $\g_{string}$ between 0 and $1/2$.

On the exponential bound in four dimensional simplicial gravity

Simplicial quantum gravity has been proposed as a regularization for four dimensional quantum gravity. The partition function is constructed by performing a weighted sum over all triangulations of the 4-sphere. The model is well-defined only if the number of such triangulations consisting of $N$ simplexes is exponentially bounded. Numerical simulations seem so far to favor such a bound.

Simplicial Quantum Gravity on a Computer

We describe a method of Monte-Carlo simulations of simplicial quantum gravity coupled to matter fields. We concentrate mainly on the problem of implementing effectively the random, dynamical triangulation and building in a detailed-balance condition into the elementary transformations of the triangulation. We propose a method of auto-tuning the parameters needed to balance simulations of the canonical ensemble. This method allows us to prepare a whole set of jobs and therefore is very useful in systematic determining the phase diagram in two dimensional coupling space. It is of particular importance when the jobs are run on a parallel machine.

Effective Sampling of Random Surfaces by Baby Universe Surgery

We propose a new, very efficient algorithm for sampling of random surfaces in the Monte Carlo simulations, based on so-called baby universe surgery, i.e. cutting and pasting of baby universes. It drastically reduces slowing down as compared to the standard local flip algorithm, thereby allowing simulations of large random surfaces coupled to matter fields. As an example we investigate the efficiency of the algorithm for 2d simplicial gravity interacting with a one-component free scalar field. The radius of gyration is the slowest mode in the standard local flip/shift algorithm. The use of baby universe surgery decreases the autocorrelation time by three order of magnitude for a random surface of $0.5 \cdot 10^5$ triangles, where it is found to be $τ_{int} = 150 \pm 31$ sweeps.

Observing 4D Baby Universes in Quantum Gravity

We measure the fractal structure of four dimensional simplicial quantum gravity by identifying so-called baby universes. This allows an easy determination of the critical exponent $\g$ connected to the entropy of four-dimensional manifolds.

4D Quantum Gravity Coupled to Matter

We investigate the phase structure of four-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to Ising spins or Gaussian scalar fields by means of numerical simulations. The quantum gravity part is modelled by the summation over random simplicial manifolds, and the matter fields are located in the center of the 4-simplices, which constitute the building blocks of the manifolds. We find that the coupling between spin and geometry is weak away from the critical point of the Ising model. At the critical point there is clear coupling, which qualitatively agrees with that of gaussian fields coupled to gravity. In the case of pure gravity a transition between a phase with highly connected geometry and a phase with very ``dilute'' geometry has been observed earlier. The nature of this transition seems unaltered when matter fields are included. It was the hope that continuum physics could be extracted at the transition between the two types of geometries. The coupling to matter fields, at least in the form discussed in this paper, seems not to improve the scaling of the curvature at the transition point.

Quantum Gravity, Dynamical Triangulation and Higer Derivative Regularization

We consider a discrete model of euclidean quantum gravity in four dimensions based on a summation over random simplicial manifolds. The action used is the Einstein-Hilbert action plus an $R^2$-term. The phase diagram as a function of the bare coupling constants is studied in the search for a sensible continuum limit. For small values of the coupling constant of the $R^2$ term the model seems to belong to the same universality class as the model with pure Einstein-Hilbert action and exhibits the same phase transition. The order of the transition may be second or higher. The average curvature is positive at the phase transition, which makes it difficult to understand the possible scaling relations of the model.

The Theory of Dynamical Random Surfaces with Extrinsic Curvature

We analyze numerically the critical properties of a two-dimensional discretized random surface with extrinsic curvature embedded in a three-dimensional space. The use of the toroidal topology enables us to enforce the non-zero external extension without the necessity of defining a boundary and allows us to measure directly the string tension. We show that a phase transition from the crumpled phase to the smooth phase observed earlier for a spherical topology appears also for a toroidal surface for the same finite value of the coupling constant of the extrinsic curvature term. The phase transition is characterized by the vanishing of the string tension. We discuss the possible non-trivial continuum limit of the theory, when approaching the critical point. Numerically we find a value of the critical exponent $\n$ to be between .38 and .42. The specific heat, related to the extrinsic curvature term seems not to diverge (or diverge slower than logarithmically) at the critical point.

3d quantum gravity coupled to matter

We investigate the phase structure of three-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to an Ising spin system by means of numerical simulations. The quantum gravity part is modelled by the summation over random simplicial manifolds, and the Ising spins are located in the center of the tetrahedra, which constitute the building blocks of the piecewise linear manifold. We find that the coupling between spin and geometry is weak away from the critical point of the Ising model. At the critical point there is clear coupling, which however does not seem to change the first order transition between the ``hot'' and ``cold'' phase of three dimensional simplicial quantum gravity observed earlier.
