Distribution Function of the End-to-End Distance of Semiflexible Polymers

The distribution function of the end-to-end distance of a semiflexible polymer, G(R;L) (where R denotes the end-to-end distance and L the contour length), is calculated using a meanfield-like approach. The theory yields an extremely simple expression for G(R;L) which is in excellent agreement with Monte Carlo simulations. The second and fourth moments of G(R;L) agree with exact results for a semiflexible polymer in both the random coil and the rod limit.

Thermodynamic stability of folded proteins against mutations

By balancing the average energy gap with its typical change due to mutations for protein-like heteropolymers with M residues, we show that native states are unstable to mutations on a scale M* ~ (lambda/sigma_mu)^(1/zeta_s), where lambda is the dispersion in the interaction free energies and sigma_mu their typical change. Theoretical bounds and numerical estimates (based on complete enumeration on four lattices) of the instability exponent zeta_s are given. Our analysis suggests that a limiting size of single-domain proteins should exist, and leads to the prediction that small proteins are insensitive to random mutations.

Some properties of a class of coupled Langevin equations

We present a set of coupled continuum equationswith a specific coupling between mobile grains $ρ$ and clusters $h$ on the surface of a sandpile. The equations are analysed self-consistently; we demonstrate that Edwards' infrared divergence is responsible for the unexpected critical exponents we find, which are verified by simulations.

In search of smooth sandpiles: the Edwards-Wilkinson equation with flow

The well-known Edwards-Wilkinson equation with a flow term added exhibits a smoothing fixed point in addition to the normal EW fixed point. Based on this, we present a model of sandpiles involving a coupling between fixed and mobile grains, which then shows the smoothing behaviour that would be expected to obtain after avalanche propagation.

Dynamic Response of Ising System to a Pulsed Field

The dynamical response to a pulsed magnetic field has been studied here both using Monte Carlo simulation and by solving numerically the meanfield dynamical equation of motion for the Ising model. The ratio R_p of the response magnetisation half-width to the width of the external field pulse has been observed to diverge and pulse susceptibility χ_p (ratio of the response magnetisation peak height and the pulse height) gives a peak near the order-disorder transition temperature T_c (for the unperturbed system). The Monte Carlo results for Ising system on square lattice show that R_p diverges at T_c, with the exponent $νz \cong 2.0$, while χ_p shows a peak at $T_c^e$, which is a function of the field pulse width $δt$. A finite size (in time) scaling analysis shows that $T_c^e = T_c + C (δt)^{-1/x}$, with $x = νz \cong 2.0$. The meanfield results show that both the divergence of R and the peak in χ_p occur at the meanfield transition temperature, while the peak height in $χ_p \sim (δt)^y$, $y \cong 1$ for small values of $δt$. These results also compare well with an approximate analytical solution of the meanfield equation of motion.
