On the problem of a physical "theory of everything"

No quantitative theory describing all physical phenomena can be made if any arbitrary standard spacetime structure is assumed. This statement is a consequence of transforming the Peano arithmetic axioms into sentences with a physical content.

Suggesting a very simple experiment designed to detect tachyons

Production of tachyons in, among other things, air showers would be in accordance with predictions of general relativity. Some such tachyons would travel with a precisely determined speed, almost equal to 5c/3 relative to the earth, and would be registered high above the region of creation of air showers, e.g. on board of a satellite. A very simple experiment designed to detect these tachyons is outlined here. Brief justification to search for tachyons is also given.

Can We Detect Tachyons Now?

An exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations enables us to construct a hypothesis on the production of tachyons. The hypothesis determines the kinematical relations for the produced tachyon. It also makes possible to estimate the empiric conditions necessary for the production. These conditions can occur when nonpositive subatomic particles of high energy strike atomic nuclei other than the proton. This suggests how experiments to search for tachyons can be performed. According to the hypothesis properly designed experiments with air showers or with the use of the strongest colliders may be successful. Failure of the air shower experiments performed hitherto is explained on the grounds of the hypothesis.

Unfortunate Terminology

The phrase "negative squared rest mass" can sometimes be found in papers on neutrinos and frequently occurs in the tachyonic literature. Consequently, some authors say that "the rest mass of tachyons is imaginary". Besides, the statement "photons have zero rest mass" is almost common. In terms of relativity, however, the state of rest cannot be reasonably defined for luxons and tachyons, and, therefore, today it does not make sense to speak of rest mass of such objects. It is shown here that the phrases "negative squared mass", "imaginary mass", and "photon's zero mass" result from applying bradyonic dynamical relativistic relations to determine properties of luxons and tachyons; and that this erroneous procedure results from an unfortunate interpretation of kinematical relativistic relations. It is also shown that the use of proper relativistic relations, i.e. luxonic or tachyonic ones, gives a positive quantity having the squared mass dimension. Thus we obtain a nonzero real quantity having the mass dimension (called masslike quantity), which is positive for the photon and may (by intuition - should) be positive for other luxons and for tachyons.

An Unexpected Electrovac Solution with the Negative Cosmological Constant

An exact solution of the current-free Einstein-Maxwell equations with the cosmological constant is presented. The solution is of Petrov type D, includes the negative cosmological constant, and could be a ``background addition'' to the present-day models of the universe. It has a surprising property such that its electromagnetic field and cosmological constant are interdependent (this constant is proportional to the energy density of this field), which may suggest a new way of measuring the constant in question. The solution describes a constant electromagnetic background with a preferred direction in the universe, and defines the entire lifetime of the universe as a simple function of the negative cosmological constant. According to our solution the absolute value of this constant should be considerably lower than that recently estimated, when astrophysical data are taken into account. Our solution is a special case of that published by Bertotti in 1959. His solution (in terms of which the cosmological constant and the background electromagnetic field are independent) and its two other special cases, i.e. the conformally flat Robinson solution (1959) and the one which is the counterpart of our solution with the positive cosmological constant, are briefly discussed.

A Hypothesis on Production of Tachyons

An exact solution of the Einstein--Maxwell equations yields a general relativistic picture of the tachyonic phenomenon, suggesting a hypothesis on the tachyon creation. The hypothesis says that the tachyon is produced when a neutral and very heavy (over 75 GeV/c^2) subatomic particle is placed in electric and magnetic fields that are perpendicular, very strong (over 6.9 x 10^17 esu/cm^2 or oersted), and the squared ratio of their strength lies in the interval (1,5]. Such conditions can occur when nonpositive subatomic particles of high energy strike atomic nuclei other than the proton. The kinematical relations for the produced tachyon are given. Previous searches for tachyons in air showers and some possible causes of their negative results are discussed. Experiments with the use of the strongest colliders and improvements in the air shower experiments are suggested. An unfortunate terminology is also discussed.

A Twisting Electrovac Solution of Type II with the Cosmological Constant

An exact solution of the current-free Einstein-Maxwell equations with the cosmological constant is presented. It is of Petrov type II, and its double principal null vector is geodesic, shear-free, expanding, and twisting. The solution contains five constants. Its electromagnetic field is non-null and aligned. The solution admits only one Killing vector and includes, as special cases, several known solutions.
