WIMPs in a 3-3-1 model with heavy Sterile neutrinos

In this work we show that from the spectrum of particles of a 3-3-1 gauge model with heavy sterile neutrinos we can have up to three Cold Dark Matter candidates as WIMPs. We obtain their relic abundance and analyze their compatibility with recent direct detection experiments, exploring the possibility of explaining the two events reported by CDMS-II. An interesting outcome of this 3-3-1 model, concerning direct detection of two WIMPs in the model, is a strong bound on the symmetry breaking scale, which imposes it to be above 3 TeV.

Deciphering the spin of new resonances in Higgsless models

We study the potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to probe the spin of new massive vector boson resonances predicted by Higgsless models. We consider its production via weak boson fusion which relies only on the coupling between the new resonances and the weak gauge bosons. We show that the LHC will be able to unravel the spin of the particles associated with the partial restoration of unitarity in vector boson scattering for integrated luminosities of 150-560 fb^-1, depending on the new state mass and on the method used in the analyses.

Signals for New Spin-1 Resonances in Electroweak Gauge Boson Pair Production at the LHC

The mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) will be directly scrutinized soon at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We analyze the LHC potential to look for new vector bosons associated with the EWSB sector. We present a possible model independent approach to search for these new spin--1 resonances. We show that the analyses of the processes pp --> l^+ l^- Emiss_T, l^\pm j j Emiss_T, l^\pm l^+ l^- Emiss_T, and l^+ l^- j j (with l=e or μand j=jet) have a large reach at the LHC and can lead to the discovery or exclusion of many EWSB scenarios such as Higgsless models.

Heavy-flavour tagging and the supersymmetry reach of the CERN Large Hadron Collider

The branching fraction for the decays of gluinos to third generation quarks is expected to be enhanced in classes of supersymmetric models where either third generation squarks are lighter than other squarks, or in mixed-higgsino dark matter models constructed to be in concordance with the measured density of cold dark matter. In such scenarios, gluino production events at the CERN Large Hadron Collider should be rich in top and bottom quark jets. Requiring b-jets in addition to missing transverse energy should, therefore, enhance the supersymmetry signal relative to Standard Model backgrounds from V + jet, VV and QCD backgrounds (V=W, Z). We quantify the increase in the supersymmetry reach of the LHC from b-tagging in a variety of well-motivated models of supersymmetry. We also explore ``top-tagging'' at the LHC. We find that while the efficiency for this turns out to be too low to give an increase in reach beyond that obtained via b-tagging, top-tagging can indeed provide a confirmatory signal if gluinos are not too heavy. Finally, we explore the prospects for detecting the direct production of third generation squarks in models with an inverted squark mass hierarchy. This is signalled by b-jets + missing transverse energy events harder than in the Standard Model, but softer than those from the production of gluinos and heavier squarks. We find that while these events can be readily separated from SM background (for third generation squark masses ~300-500 GeV), the contamination from the much heavier gluinos and squarks remains formidable if these are also accessible.

p p -> j j e+/- mu+/- nu nu and j j e+/- mu-/+ nu nu at O(α_{em}^6) and O(α_{em}^4 α_s^2) for the Study of the Quartic Electroweak Gauge Boson Vertex at LHC

We analyze the potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to study the structure of quartic vector-boson interactions through the pair production of electroweak gauge bosons via weak boson fusion q q -> q q W W. In order to study these couplings we have performed a partonic level calculation of all processes p p -> j j e+/- mu+/- nu nu and pp -> j j e+/- mu-/+ nu nu at the LHC using the exact matrix elements at O(α_{em}^6) and O(α_{em}^4 α_s^2) as well as a full simulation of the t tbar plus 0 to 2 jets backgrounds. A complete calculation of the scattering amplitudes is necessary not only for a correct description of the process but also to preserve all correlations between the final state particles which can be used to enhance the signal. Our analyses indicate that the LHC can improve by more than one order of magnitude the bounds arising at present from indirect measurements.

Using b-tagging to enhance the SUSY reach of the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Assuming that supersymmetry is realized with parameters in the hyperbolic branch/focus point (HB/FP) region of the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model, we show that by searching for multijet + missing E_T events with tagged b jets the reach of experiments at the LHC may be extended by as much as 20% from current projections. The reason for this is that gluino decays to third generation quarks are enhanced because the lightest neutralino has substantial higgsino components. Although we were motivated to perform this analysis because the HB/FP region is compatible with the recent determination of the relic density of cold dark matter, our considerations may well have a wider applicability since decays of gluinos to third generation quarks are favoured in a wide variety of models.

Testing Color Evaporation in Photon-Photon Production of J/Psi at CERN LEP II

The DELPHI Collaboration has recently reported the measurement of J/Psi production in photon-photon collisions at LEP II. These newly available data provide an additional proof of the importance of colored c bar{c} pairs for the production of charmonium because these data can only be explained by considering resolved photon processes. We show here that the inclusion of color octet contributions to the J/Psi production in the framework of the color evaporation model is able to reproduce this data. In particular, the transverse-momentum distribution of the J/Psi mesons is well described by this model.

Higgs-mediated leptonic decays of B_s and B_d mesons as probes of supersymmetry

If tan(beta) is large, down-type quark mass matrices and Yukawa couplings cannot be simultaneously diagonalized, and flavour violating couplings of the neutral Higgs bosons are induced at the 1-loop level. These couplings lead to Higgs-mediated contributions to the decays B_s -> mu+ mu- and B_d -> tau+ tau-, at a level that might be of interest for the current Tevatron run, or possibly, at B-factories. We evaluate the branching ratios for these decays within the framework of minimal gravity-, gauge- and anomaly-mediated SUSY breaking models, and also in SU(5) supergravity models with non-universal gaugino mass parameters at the GUT scale. We find that the contribution from gluino loops, which seems to have been left out in recent phenomenological analyses, is significant. We explore how the branching fraction varies in these models, emphasizing parameter regions consistent with other observations.

Probing Anomalous Quartic Couplings in e-gamma and gamma-gamma Colliders

We analyze the potential of the e+e- Linear Colliders, operating in the e-gamma and gamma-gamma modes, to probe anomalous quartic vector--boson interactions through the multiple production of W's and Z's. We examine all $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ chiral operators of order p^4 that lead to new four--gauge--boson interactions but do not alter trilinear vertices. We show that the e-gamma and gamma-gamma modes are able not only to establish the existence of a strongly interacting symmetry breaking sector but also to probe for anomalous quartic couplings of the order of 10^{-2} at 90% CL. Moreover, the information gathered in the e-gamma mode can be used to reduced the ambiguities of the e+e- mode.

Reach of the CERN LHC for the Minimal Anomaly-Mediated SUSY Breaking Model

We examine the reach of the CERN LHC pp collider for supersymmetric models where the dominant contribution to soft SUSY breaking parameters arises from the superconformal anomaly. In the simplest viable anomaly mediated SUSY breaking (AMSB) model, tachyonic slepton squared masses are made positive by adding a universal contribution m_0^2 to all scalars. We use the event generator ISAJET to generate AMSB signal events as a function of model parameter space. Assuming an integrated luminosity of 10 fb-1, the LHC can reach to values of $m_{\tg}\sim 2.3$ TeV for low values of $m_0$, where the dilepton plus jets plus E_T(missing) channel offers the best reach. For large $m_0$, the best signature is typically 0 or 1 isolated lepton plus jets plus E_T(missing); in this case the reach is typically diminished to values of $m_{\tg}\sim 1.3$ TeV. The presence of terminating tracks in a subset of signal events could serve to verify the presence of a long lived lightest chargino which is generic in the minimal AMSB model.

Supersymmetric Higgs Boson Pair Production: Discovery Prospects at Hadron Colliders

We study the potential of hadron colliders in the search for the pair production of neutral Higgs bosons in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We perform a detailed signal and background analysis, working out efficient kinematical cuts for the extraction of the signal. The important role of squark loop contributions to the signal is re--emphasized. If the signal is sufficiently enhanced by these contributions, it could even be observable at the next run of the upgraded Tevatron collider in the near future. At the LHC the pair production of light and heavy Higgs bosons might be detectable simultaneously.

The Paradox of Charmonium Production

The CDF preliminary analysis on polarized charmonium production at moderate transverse momentum, $p_T \sim 4 - 20$ GeV, severely challenges the color octet model (COM), which predicts quarkonium to be transversely polarized with increasing $p_T$. Based on this data, we analyze the compatibility of the Tevatron and the photoproduction at HERA in the context of the COM. Due to the uncertainty on the extraction of non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) matrix elements and a lack of complete next-to-leading order calculations, one cannot completely rule out the COM. Nonetheless, both collider experiments seem to push the input matrix elements to opposite directions, and the puzzle of quarkonium polarization remains unsolved.

Supersymmetric Higgs pair discovery prospects at hadron colliders

We study the potential of hadron colliders in the search for the pair production of neutral Higgs bosons in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Using analytical expressions for the relevant amplitudes, we perform a detailed signal and background analysis, working out efficient kinematical cuts for the extraction of the signal. The important role of squark loop contributions to the signal is emphasised. If the signal is sufficiently enhanced by these contributions, it could even be observable at the next run of the upgraded Tevatron collider in the near future. At the LHC the pair production of light and heavy Higgs bosons might be detectable simultaneously.

Supersymmetric Higgs Pair Production at Hadron Colliders

We study the pair production of neutral Higgs bosons through gluon fusion at hadron colliders in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We present analytical expressions for the relevant amplitudes, including both quark and squark loop contributions, and allowing for mixing between the superpartners of left- and right-handed quarks. Squark loop contributions can increase the cross section for the production of two CP-even Higgs bosons by more than two orders of magnitude, if the relevant trilinear soft breaking parameter is large and the mass of the lighter squark eigenstate is not too far above its current lower bound. In the region of large $\tan β$, neutral Higgs boson pair production might even be observable in the $4 b$ final state during the next run of the Tevatron collider.

Hunting a Light U(1)_B Gauge Boson Coupled to Baryon Number in Collider Experiments

We analyze several signals at HERA and the Tevatron of a light $U(1)_B$ gauge boson ($γ_B$) coupling to baryon number. We show that the study of the production of $b \bar{b}$ pairs at the (upgraded) Tevatron can exclude $γ_B$ with masses ($m_B$) in the range $40 \lesssim m_B \lesssim 300$ GeV for $γ_B$ couplings ($α_B$) greater than $2 \times 10^{-2}$ ($3 \times 10^{-3}$). We also show that the HERA experiments cannot improve the present bounds on $γ_B$. Moreover, we demonstrate that the production at HERA and the Tevatron of di--jet events with large rapidity gaps between the jets cannot be explained by the existence of a light $γ_B$.

Strongly Interacting Vector Bosons at the LHC: Quartic Anomalous Couplings

We analyze the potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider to study anomalous quartic vector--boson interactions through the production of vector--boson pairs accompanied by jets. In the framework of $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ chiral Lagrangians, we examine all effective operators of order $p^4$ that lead to new four--gauge--boson interactions but do not alter trilinear vertices. In our analyses, we perform the full tree level calculation of the processes leading to two jets plus vector--boson pairs, $W^+W^-$, $W^\pm W^\pm$, $W^\pm Z$, or $ZZ$, taking properly into account the interference between the standard model and the anomalous contributions. We obtain the bounds that can be placed on the anomalous quartic interactions and we study the strategies to distinguish the possible new couplings.

Tests of Anomalous Quartic Couplings at the NLC

We analyze the potential of the Next Linear $e^+e^-$ Collider to study anomalous quartic vector-boson interactions through the processes $e^+ e^- \to W^+W^-Z$ and $ZZZ$. In the framework of $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ chiral Lagrangians, we examine all effective operators of order $p^4$ that lead to four-gauge-boson interactions but do not induce anomalous trilinear vertices. In our analysis, we take into account the decay of the vector bosons to fermions and evaluate the efficiency in their reconstruction. We obtain the bounds that can be placed on the anomalous quartic interactions and we study the strategies to distinguish the possible couplings.
