New Parton Distribution Functions for the Photon

We present new improved parton distributions for the photon. We fit {\bf all} available data on the photon structure function, $F^γ_{2}(x,Q^2)$, with $Q^2\ge 3$ GeV$^2$, in order to determine the quark distributions. We also pay particular attention to the gluon distribution in the photon, $g^γ(x,Q^2)$, which has been poorly constrained in earlier analyses which only include structure function data. We use large $p_T$ jet production in $γγ$ collisions from TRISTAN to constrain $g^γ$. We also see what information can be gleaned from $γp$ collisions at HERA on $g^γ$ and on the quark distributions at large $x$, where there are no structure function data. We review future prospects of elucidating the parton distributions of the photon.

Prompt Photon Production in $γγ$ Collisions and the Gluon Content of the Photon

We calculate the cross section for inclusive prompt photon production in $γγ$ collisions, i.e. the reaction $e^+e^-\to γγ\to γX$, in next-to-leading order QCD. We show that at LEP2 energies this cross section is measurable and is sensitive to the gluon distribution of the photon, $g^γ$, which is currently very poorly constrained by data.

Multiple Hard Parton Interactions at HERA

At HERA, the large flux of almost real photons accompanying the electron beam leads to the copious photoproduction of jets. Regions of small momentum fractions $x$ of the incoming particles are explored, where the density of partons is high. As a result, the probability for more than one hard partonic scattering occurring in a single $γp$ collision could become significant. It is well known that this effect modifies the contribution of jets (minijets) to the total cross section. We discuss the latest HERA data on the total $γp$ cross section in this context. The possible effects of multiple hard interactions on event shapes and jet cross sections at HERA have been studied using Monte Carlo programs. We review some of the available results, which in general indicate that the effects of multiple interactions should be significant and may already be manifest in the existing HERA data.

Multiple Hard Interactions in Gamma-Gamma and Gamma-P Physics at LEP and HERA

At $e^+e^-$ and $ep$ colliders, the large fluxes of almost on-shell photons accompanying the lepton beams lead to the photoproduction of jets. As the centre-of-mass energy is increased, regions of smaller $x$ in the parton densities are explored and these are regions of high parton density. As a result, the probability for more than one hard partonic scattering occurring in a single $γγ$ or $γp$ collision can become significant. This effect has been simulated using an eikonal prescription combined with the HERWIG Monte Carlo program. The possible effects of multiple hard interactions on event shapes and jet cross sections have been studied in this framework at a range of energies relevant to HERA and LEPII. The results indicate that the effects could be significant.
