Single-gap two-band superconductivity well above the Pauli limit in non-centrosymmetric TaIr$_2$B$_2$

Non-centrosymmetric superconducting materials represent an exciting class of novel superconductors featuring a variety of unconventional properties, including mixed-parity pairing and very high upper critical fields. Here, we present a comprehensive study of TaIr$_2$B$_2$ (with $T_c$ = 5.1 K), using a set of complementary experimental methods, including bulk- and surface-sensitive techniques. We provide evidence that this system is a two-band, yet it behaves as a single-gap superconductor with a strong coupling. The upper critical field of TaIr$_2$B$_2$ significantly exceeds the Pauli limit and exhibits a nearly linear temperature dependence down to the lowest temperatures. This behavior, rarely seen in superconductors, is discussed in terms of anti-symmetric spin-orbit interaction, two-band-, and strong-coupling effects, as well as disorder.

Disorder- and magnetic field-tuned fermionic superconductor-insulator transition in MoN thin films. Transport and STM studies

Superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) driven by disorder and transverse magnetic field has been investigated in ultrathin MoN films by means of transport measurements and scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Upon decreasing thickness, the homogeneously disordered films show increasing sheet resistance Rs, shift of the superconducting transition Tc to lower temperatures with the 3 nm MoN being the last superconducting film and thinner films already insulating. Fermionic scenario of SIT is evidenced by applicability of the Finkelsteins model, by the fact that Tc and the superconducting gap are coupled with a constant ratio, and by the spatial homogeneity of the superconducting and electronic characteristics. The logarithmic anomaly found in the tunneling spectra of the non-superconducting films is further enhanced in increased magnetic field due to the Zeeman spin effects driving the system deeper into the insulating state and pointing also to fermionic SIT.

Evidence of symmetry lowering in antiferromagnetic metal TmB12 with dynamic charge stripes

Precise angle-resolved magnetoresistance and magnetization measurements have revealed (i) strong charge transport and magnetic anisotropy and (ii) emergence of a huge number of magnetic phases in the ground state of TmB12 antiferromagnetic metal with fcc crystal structure and dynamic charge stripes. By analyzing the angular H-fi magnetic phase diagrams reconstructed from experimental angle-resolved magnetoresistance and magnetization data we argue that the symmetry lowering is a consequence of suppression of the indirect Ruderman- Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange along 110 directions between nearest neighboring magnetic moments of Tm3+ ions and subsequent redistribution of conduction electrons to quantum fluctuations of the electron density (stripes). Magnetoresistance components are discussed in terms of charge scattering on the spin density wave, itinerant ferromagnetic nano-domains and on-site Tm3+ spin fluctuations.

Unusual interplay between superconductivity and field-induced charge order in YBa2Cu3Oy

We present a detailed study of the temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) dependence of the electronic density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level, as deduced from specific heat and Knight shift measurements in underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy. We find that the DOS becomes field-independent above a characteristic field H_{DOS} and that the H_{DOS}(T) line displays an unusual inflection near the onset of the long range 3D charge-density wave order. The unusual S-shape of H_{DOS}(T) is suggestive of two mutually-exclusive orders that eventually establish a form of cooperation in order to coexist at low T. On theoretical grounds, such a collaboration could result from the stabilisation of a pair-density wave state, which calls for further investigations in this region of the phase diagram

Heat Capacity of Single Crystal CuxTiSe2 Superconductors

We present heat capacity measurements on a series of superconducting Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$ single crystals with different Cu content down to 600 mK and up to 1 T performed by ac microcalorimetry. The samples cover a large portion of the phase diagram from an underdoped to a slightly overdoped region with an increasing superconducting critical temperature and the charge density wave (CDW) order gradually suppressed. The electronic heat capacity as a function of normalized temperature $T/T_c$ shows no difference regardless of the concentration of copper, i.e., regardless of how much the CDW order is developed in the samples. The data analysis reveals consistently a single s-wave gap with an intermediate coupling strength $2Δ/k_BT_c$ = 3.7 for all samples.

Point-contact spectroscopy of the phononic mechanism of superconductivity in YB6

Lortz et al. [Phys. Rev. B 73, 024512 (2006)] have utilized specific heat and resistivity measurements as "thermal spectroscopies" to deconvolve the spectrum of the electron-phonon interaction in YB$_6$ assuming a major role of the low frequency phonon mode in mediating superconductivity. Here, we present direct point-contact spectroscopy studies of the superconducting interaction in this system. As a result the normalized superconducting gap reveals a strong coupling with $2Δ/k_BT_c = 4$ and moreover the spectra contain nonlinearities typical of the electron-phonon interaction at energies around 8 meV. The in-magnetic-field measurements evidence that the phonon features found in the second derivative of the current-voltage characteristics are due to the energy dependence of the superconducting energy gap as their energy position shrinks equally as the gap is closing. This is a direct proof that the superconducting coupling in the system is due to the low energy Einstein-like phonon mode associated with the yttrium ion vibrations in a perfect agreement with determinations from bulk measurements.

Superconducting energy gap in MgCNi3 single crystals: Point-contact spectroscopy and specific-heat measurements

Specific heat has been measured down to 600 mK and up to 8 Tesla by the highly sensitive AC microcalorimetry on the MgCNi3 single crystals with Tc ~ 7 K. Exponential decay of the electronic specific heat at low temperatures proved that a superconducting energy gap is fully open on the whole Fermi surface, in agreement with our previous magnetic penetration depth measurements on the same crystals. The specific-heat data analysis shows consistently the strong coupling strength 2D/kTc ~ 4. This scenario is supported by the direct gap measurements via the point-contact spectroscopy. Moreover, the spectroscopy measurements show a decrease in the critical temperature at the sample surface accounting for the observed differences of the superfluid density deduced from the measurements by different techniques.

Specific-heat measurements of superconducting NbS2 single crystal in an external magnetic field: Study on the energy gap structure

The heat capacity of a 2H-NbS2 single crystal has been measured by a highly sensitive ac technique down to 0.6 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. At very low temperatures data show excitations over an energy gap (2DS/kBTc \approx 2.1) much smaller than the BCS value. The overall temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat Ce can be explained either by the existence of a strongly anisotropic single-energy gap or within a two-gap scenario with the large gap about twice bigger than the small one. The field dependence of the Sommerfeld coefficient shows a strong curvature for both principal-field orientations, parallel and perpendicular to the c axis of the crystal, resulting in a magnetic field dependence of the superconducting anisotropy. These features are discussed in comparison to the case of MgB2 and to the data obtained by scanning-tunneling spectroscopy. We conclude that the two-gap scenario better describes the gap structure of NbS2 than the anisotropic s-wave model.

Low temperature transition to a superconducting phase in boron-doped silicon films grown on (001)-oriented silicon wafers

We report on a detailed analysis of the superconducting properties of boron-doped silicon films grown along the 001 direction by Gas Immersion Laser Doping. The doping concentration cB has been varied up to approx. 10 at.% by increasing the number of laser shots to 500. No superconductivity could be observed down to 40mK for doping level below 2.5 at.%. The critical temperature Tc then increased steeply to reach 0.6K for cB = 8 at%. No hysteresis was found for the transitions in magnetic field, which is characteristic of a type II superconductor. The corresponding upper critical field Hc2(0) was on the order of 1000 G, much smaller than the value previously reported by Bustarret et al. in Nature (London) 444, 465 (2006).

Upper and lower critical fields in NdFeAs(O,F) single crystals : a study by Hall probe magnetization and specific heat

The upper and lower critical fields have been deduced from specific heat and Hall probe magnetization measurements in non-optimally doped NdFeAs(O,F) single crystals ($T_c \sim 32-35$K). The anisoptropy of the penetration depth ($Γ_λ$) is temperature independent and on the order of $4.0 \pm 1.5$. Similarly specific heat data lead an anisotropy of the coherence lenght $Γ_ξ\sim 5.5 \pm 1.5$ close to $T_c$. Our results suggest the presence of rather large thermal fluctuations and to the existence of a vortex liquid phase over a broad temperature range ($\sim 5$K large at 2T).

Tunneling Spectroscopy and Vortex Imaging in Boron-Doped Diamond

We present the first scanning tunneling spectroscopy study of single-crystalline boron doped diamond. The measurements were performed below 100 mK with a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The tunneling density of states displays a clear superconducting gap. The temperature evolution of the order parameter follows the weak coupling BCS law with $Δ(0)/k_B T_c \simeq 1.74$. Vortex imaging at low magnetic field also reveals localized states inside the vortex core that are unexpected for such a dirty superconductor.

Two band/two gap superconductivity in carbon-substituted MgB2 evidenced by point-contact spectroscopy

The Andreev reflection measurements of the superconducting energy gap in the carbon-substituted MgB$_2$ are presented. Despite the strong suppression of the transition temperature by 17 K in comparison with the pure MgB$_2$, the same reduced value of the small superconducting energy gap with $2Δ/kT_c \approx$ 1.7 has been systematically observed. This indicates that the two band/two gap superconductivity is still preserved here.

Point-contact spectroscopy of MgB2

Point-contact spectroscopy measurements on magnesium diboride reveal the existence of two superconducting energy gaps closing at the same transition temperature in line with the multiband model of superconductivity. The sizes of the two gaps ($Δ_π$ = 2.8 meV and $Δ_σ$ = 6.5-7 meV) are respectively smaller and larger than the expected weak coupling value of the one-gap superconductor. The smaller gap is rapidly filled by a small magnetic field of about 1-2 Tesla much lower than the real upper critical field $H_{c2}$. The larger gap is closed at the anisotropic $H_{c2}$. Above the gap energies reproducible non-linearities are observed at the characteristic phonon energies of MgB$_2$.

3D-2D crossover in the naturally layered superconductor (LaSe)1.14(NbSe2)

The temperature and angular dependencies of the resistive upper critical magnetic field $B_{c2}$ reveal a dimensional crossover of the superconducting state in the highly anisotropic misfit-layer single crystal of (LaSe)$_{1.14}$(NbSe$_2$) with the critical temperature $T_c$ of 1.23 K. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field $B_{c2\parallel ab}(T)$ for a field orientation along the conducting $(ab)$-planes displays a characteristic upturn at 1.1 K and below this temperature the angular dependence of $B_{c2}$ has a cusp around the parallel field orientation. Both these typical features are observed for the first time in a naturally crystalline layered system.

Evidence for two superconducting energy gaps in MgB2 by point-contact spectroscopy

Experimental support is found for the multiband model of the superconductivity in the recently discovered system MgB2 with the transition temperature Tc = 39 K. By means of Andreev reflection evidence is obtained for two distinct superconducting energy gaps. The sizes of the two gaps (Delta_S = 2.8 meV and Delta_L = 7 meV) are respectively smaller and larger than the expected weak coupling value. Due to the temperature smearing of the spectra the two gaps are hardly distinguishable at elevated temperatures but when a magnetic field is applied the presence of two gaps can be demonstrated close to the bulk T_c in the raw data.

Interlayer transport in highly anisotropic misfit-layer superconductor (LaSe)1.14(NbSe2)

We show that the interlayer transport in a two-dimensional superconductor can reveal a peak in the temperature as well as the magnetic field dependence of the resistivity near the superconducting transition. The magnetotransport experiment was performed on the highly anisotropic misfit-layer superconductor (LaSe)$_{1.14}$(NbSe$_2$) with critical tempertaure $T_c$ of 1.2 K. The effect is interpreted within the tunneling mechanism of the charge transport across the Josephson-coupled layers via two parallel channels - the quasiparticles and the Cooper pairs. Similar behavior can be found in the high-$T_c$ cuprates but there it is inevitably interfering with the anomalous normal state. The upper critical magnetic field can be obtained from the interlayer tunneling conductance.
