The Snowmass Points and Slopes: Benchmarks for SUSY Searches

The ``Snowmass Points and Slopes'' (SPS) are a set of benchmark points and parameter lines in the MSSM parameter space corresponding to different scenarios in the search for Supersymmetry at present and future experiments. This set of benchmarks was agreed upon at the 2001 ``Snowmass Workshop on the Future of Particle Physics'' as a consensus based on different existing proposals.

Analysis of the Neutralino System in Supersymmetric Theories -- Addendum --

In the preceding reference [CKMZ] we have shown how the fundamental gaugino and higgsino parameters of the chargino and neutralino system in supersymmetric theories can be determined in high--precision experiments at $e^+e^-$ linear colliders. Within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model these parameters can be reconstructed completely even if only the light charginos $\tildeχ^\pm_1$ and the light neutralinos $\tildeχ^0_1$ and $\tildeχ^0_2$ are kinematically accessible in the initial phase of these machines, as demonstrated in this Addendum.

Supersymmetric Lepton Flavour Violation

In supersymmetric models new sources of lepton flavour violation (LFV) may enhance the rates of charged lepton flavour violating processes, like mu to e gamma, and generate distinct final states at future colliders, e.g. tau mu + jets + missing energy. We discuss the role of chargino pair production for the LFV signals at e+e- colliders.

Analysis of the Neutralino System in Supersymmetric Theories

Charginos $\tildeχ^\pm$ and neutralinos $\tildeχ^0$ in supersymmetric theories can be produced copiously at $e^+e^-$ colliders and their properties can be measured with high accuracy. Consecutively to the chargino system, in which the SU(2) gaugino parameter $M_2$, the higgsino mass parameter $μ$ and $\tanβ$ can be determined, the remaining fundamental supersymmetry parameter in the gaugino/higgsino sector of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, the U(1) gaugino mass $M_1$, can be analyzed in the neutralino system, including its modulus and its phase in CP-noninvariant theories. The CP properties of the neutralino system are characterized by unitarity quadrangles. Analytical solutions for the neutralino mass eigenvalues and for the mixing matrix are presented for CP-noninvariant theories in general. They can be written in compact form for large supersymmetric mass parameters. The closure of the neutralino and chargino systems can be studied by exploiting sum rules for the pair-production processes in $e^+e^-$ collisions. Thus the picture of the non-colored gaugino and higgsino complex in supersymmetric theories can comprehensively be reconstructed in these experiments.

Supersymmetric lepton flavour violation in a linear collider: the role of charginos

The occurrence of a significant amount of supersymmetric lepton flavour violation at laboratory energies, through $\tildeν_μ- \tildeν_τ$ mixing, has become a realistic possibility in the wake of the super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino result. This effect can be observed in an e+e- linear collider with the distinct final state tau+mu+ jets+E_T. We show that the pair production of charginos can make an important contribution to this process and has to be taken into account in addition to that of sneutrinos or charged sleptons. Some case studies are presented with CM energies of 500 and 800 GeV and integrated luminosities of 50, 500 and 1000 fb-1.

Phenomenology of the Chargino and Neutralino Systems

The chargino and neutralino pair production processes at $e^+e^-$ collisions are explored to determine the underlying SUSY parameters. The sum rules for the couplings are used to check the closure of two-chargino and four-neutralino systems in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model.

Do precision electroweak constraints guarantee $e^+e^-$ collider discovery of at least one Higgs boson of a two-Higgs-doublet model?

We consider a CP-conserving two-Higgs-doublet type II model with a light scalar or pseudoscalar neutral Higgs boson ($\h=\hl$ or $\h=\ha$) that has no $ZZ/WW$ coupling and, thus, cannot be detected in $\epem\to Z\h$ (Higgs-strahlung) or $ν\antiν\h$ (via $WW$ fusion). Despite sum rules which ensure that the light $\h$ must have significant $t\anti t$ or $b\anti b$ coupling, for a wedge of moderate $\tanb$, that becomes increasingly large as $\mh$ increases, the $\h$ can also escape discovery in both $b\anti b \h$ and $t\anti t \h$ production at a $\rts=500-800\gev$ $\epem$ collider (for expected luminosities). If the other Higgs bosons happen to be too heavy to be produced, then no Higgs boson would be detected. We demonstrate that, despite such high masses for the other Higgs bosons, only the low-$\tanb$ portion of the no-discovery wedges in $[\mh,\tanb]$ parameter space can be excluded due to failure to fit precision electroweak observables. In the $\tanb\gsim 1$ regions of the no-discovery wedges, we find that the 2HDM fit to precision electroweak observables has small $Δχ^2$ relative to the best minimal one-doublet SM fit.

Search Strategies for Non-Standard Higgs Bosons at Future e^+e^- Colliders

Already in the simplest two-Higgs-doublet model with CP violation in the Higgs sector, the $3\times3$ mixing matrix for the neutral Higgs bosons can substantially modify their couplings, thereby endangering the ``classical'' Higgs search strategies. However, there are sum rules relating Yukawa and Higgs-Z couplings which ensure that the ZZ, $b\anti b$ and $t\anti t$ couplings of a given neutral 2HDM Higgs boson cannot all be simultaneously suppressed. This result implies that any single Higgs boson will be detectable at an e^+e^- collider if the Z+Higgs, $b\anti b+$Higgs {\it and} $t\anti t+$Higgs production channels are all kinematically accessible {\it and} if the integrated luminosity is sufficient. We explore, as a function of Higgs mass, the luminosity required to guarantee Higgs boson detection, and find that for moderate $\tanβ$ values the needed luminosity is unlikely to be available for all possible mixing scenarios. The additional difficulties for the case when the two-doublet Higgs sector is extended by adding one more singlet are summarized. Implications of the sum rules for Higgs discovery at the Tevatron and LHC are briefly discussed.

Report of the Beyond the Standard Model Working Group of the 1999 UK Phenomenology Workshop on Collider Physics (Durham)

The Beyond the Standard Model Working Group discussed a variety of topics relating to exotic searches at current and future colliders, and the phenomenology of current models beyond the Standard Model. For example, various supersymmetric (SUSY) and extra dimensions search possibilities and constraints are presented. Fine-tuning implications of SUSY searches are derived. The implications of Higgs (non)-discovery are discussed, as well as the program HDECAY. The individual contributions are included seperately. Much of the enclosed work is original, although some is reviewed.

Reconstructing the Chargino System at $e^+e^-$ Linear Colliders

In most supersymmetric theories charginos, $\tildeχ^\pm_{1,2}$, belong to the class of the lightest supersymmetric particles. The chargino system can be reconstructed completely in $e^+e^-$ collider experiments: $e^+e^-\to\tildeχ_i^+ \tildeχ_j^- [i,j=1,2]$. By measuring the total cross sections and the asymmetries with polarized beams, the chargino masses and the gaugino-higgsino mixing angles of these states can be determined accurately. If only the lightest charginos $\tildeχ_1^\pm$ are kinematically accessible in a first phase of the machine, transverse beam polarization or the measurement of chargino polarization in the final state is needed to determine the mixing angles. From these observables the fundamental SUSY parameters can be derived: the SU(2) gaugino mass $M_2$, the modulus and the cosine of the CP-violating phase of the higgsino mass parameter $μ$, and $\tanβ= v_2/v_1$, the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two neutral Higgs doublet fields. The remaining two-fold ambiguity of the phase can be resolved by measuring the normal polarization of the charginos. Sum rules of the cross sections can be exploited to investigate the closure of the two-chargino system.

Chargino Pair Production at $e^+e^-$ Colliders with Polarized Beams

The chargino $\tildeχ^\pm_{1,2}$ system can be reconstructed completely in $e^+e^-$ collisions. By measuring the total cross sections and the asymmetries with polarized beams in $e^+e^-\to\tildeχ_i^+ \tildeχ_j^- [i,j=1,2]$, the chargino masses and the gaugino-higgsino mixing angles of these states can be determined very accurately. If only the lightest charginos $\tildeχ_1^\pm$ are kinematically accessible, transverse beam polarization is needed to determine the mixing angles unambiguously. [The remaining two-fold ambiguity of the phase can be resolved by measuring the normal polarization of the charginos.]

Reconstruction of Basic Parameters from Chargino Production

The event characteristics of chargino pair production at e+e- collisions are explored to determine gaugino-higgsino mixing angles. We demonstrate that by measuring total cross sections and left-right asymmetries with polarized beams or angular correlations among chargino decay products the fundamental SUSY parameters M_2, μand tan(beta) can be uniquely determined in a model independent way.

Finding the CP-Violating Higgs Bosons at e^+e^- Colliders

We discuss a general two-Higgs-doublet model with CP violation in the Higgs sector. In general, the three neutral Higgs fields of the model all mix and the resulting physical Higgs bosons have no definite CP properties. We derive a new sum rule relating Yukawa and Higgs-Z couplings which implies that a neutral Higgs boson cannot escape detection at an e^+e^- collider if it is kinematically accessible in Z+Higgs, $b\anti b+$Higgs and $t\anti t+$Higgs production, irrespective of the mixing angles and the masses of the other neutral Higgs bosons. We also discuss modifications of the sum rules and their phenomenological consequences in the case when the two-doublet Higgs sector is extended by adding one or more singlets.
