The magnetic field in M16: new results from the JCMT BISTRO survey

We present a study of the magnetic field (B-field) in the Eagle Nebula (M16) using data from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. We extend our previous study of the well-known `Pillars of Creation' region of the nebula to study two other structures in the region, the `Spire' and the bright-rimmed cloud (BRC) known as `SFO30'. These structures show similar B-field morphologies to the Pillars. We calculate B-field strengths using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi (DCF) method and thereby estimate the magnetic potential energy in each of these regions for comparison with the local gravitational, turbulent and thermal energies, as well as the pressure energy of the shocks from nearby O-type stars. We find approximate equipartition between the energies supporting the regions and those tending towards collapse, with the B-field support playing a significant role. This agrees with our earlier hypothesis that B-fields help support pillar-like structures in molecular clouds and make them longer-lived than they would otherwise have been.

The UK Submillimetre and Millimetre Astronomy Roadmap 2024

In this Roadmap, we present a vision for the future of submillimetre and millimetre astronomy in the United Kingdom over the next decade and beyond. This Roadmap has been developed in response to the recommendation of the Astronomy Advisory Panel (AAP) of the STFC in the AAP Astronomy Roadmap 2022. In order to develop our stragetic priorities and recommendations, we surveyed the UK submillimetre and millimetre community to determine their key priorities for both the near-term and long-term future of the field. We further performed detailed reviews of UK leadership in submillimetre/millimetre science and instrumentation. Our key strategic priorities are as follows: 1. The UK must be a key partner in the forthcoming AtLAST telescope, for which it is essential that the UK remains a key partner in the JCMT in the intermediate term. 2. The UK must maintain, and if possible enhance, access to ALMA and aim to lead parts of instrument development for ALMA2040. Our strategic priorities complement one another: AtLAST (a 50m single-dish telescope) and an upgraded ALMA (a large configurable interferometric array) would be in synergy, not competition, with one another. Both have identified and are working towards the same overarching science goals, and both are required in order to fully address these goals.

High Resolution Observations of HI in the IC 63 Reflection Nebula

Photodissociation regions (PDRs), where the (far-)ultraviolet light from hot young stars interact with the gas in surrounding molecular clouds, provide laboratories for understanding the nature and role of feedback by star formation on the interstellar medium. While the general nature of PDRs is well understood - at least under simplified conditions - the detailed dynamics and chemistry of these regions, including gas clumping, evolution over time etc. can be very complex. We present interferometric observations of the 21 cm atomic hydrogen line, combined with [CII] 158 $μ$m observations, towards the nearby reflection nebula IC 63. We find a clumpy HI structure in the PDR, and a ring morphology for the HI emission at the tip of IC 63. We further unveil kinematic substructure, of the order of 1~km~s$^{-1}$, in the PDR layers and several legs that will disperse IC 63 in $<$0.5 Myr. We find that the dynamics in the PDR explain the observed clumpy HI distribution and lack of a well-defined HI/H$_{2}$ transition front. However, it is currently not possible to conclude whether HI self-absorption (HISA) and non-equilibrium chemistry also contribute to this clumpy morphology and missing HI/H$_{2}$ transition front.
