Surface spin fluctuations probed with flux noise and coherence in Josephson phase qubits

We measure the dependence of qubit phase coherence and surface spin induced flux noise on inductor loop geometry. While wider inductor traces change neither the flux noise power spectrum nor the qubit dephasing time, increased inductance leads to a simultaneous increase in both. Using our protocol for measuring low frequency flux noise, we make a direct comparison between the flux noise spectrum and qubit phase decay, finding agreement within 10% of theory. The dependence of the measured flux noise on inductor geometry is consistent with a noise source correlation length between 6 and 400 um.

Surface loss simulations of superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators

Losses in superconducting planar resonators are presently assumed to predominantly arise from surface-oxide dissipation, due to experimental losses varying with choice of materials. We model and simulate the magnitude of the loss from interface surfaces in the resonator, and investigate the dependence on power, resonator geometry, and dimensions. Surprisingly, the dominant surface loss is found to arise from the metal-substrate and substrate-air interfaces. This result will be useful in guiding device optimization, even with conventional materials.

Loss and decoherence due to stray infrared light in superconducting quantum circuits

We find that stray infrared light from the 4 K stage in a cryostat can cause significant loss in superconducting resonators and qubits. For devices shielded in only a metal box, we measured resonators with quality factors Q = 10^5 and qubits with energy relaxation times T_1=120 ns, consistent with a stray light-induced quasiparticle density of 170-230 μm^{-3}. By adding a second black shield at the sample temperature, we found about an order of magnitude improvement in performance and no sensitivity to the 4 K radiation. We also tested various shielding methods, implying a lower limit of Q = 10^8 due to stray light in the light-tight configuration.

Quantum process tomography of two-qubit controlled-Z and controlled-NOT gates using superconducting phase qubits

We experimentally demonstrate quantum process tomography of controlled-Z and controlled-NOT gates using capacitively-coupled superconducting phase qubits. These gates are realized by using the $|2\rangle$ state of the phase qubit. We obtain a process fidelity of 0.70 for the controlled-phase and 0.56 for the controlled-NOT gate, with the loss of fidelity mostly due to single-qubit decoherence. The controlled-Z gate is also used to demonstrate a two-qubit Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm with a single function query.

Quark-Hadron Duality in Neutron (3He) Spin Structure

We present experimental results of the first high-precision test of quark-hadron duality in the spin-structure function g_1 of the neutron and $^3$He using a polarized 3He target in the four-momentum-transfer-squared range from 0.7 to 4.0 (GeV/c)^2. Global duality is observed for the spin-structure function g_1 down to at least Q^2 = 1.8 (GeV/c)^2 in both targets. We have also formed the photon-nucleon asymmetry A_1 in the resonance region for 3He and found no strong Q^2-dependence above 2.2 (GeV/c)^2.

ULTRACAM: an ultra-fast, triple-beam CCD camera for high-speed astrophysics

ULTRACAM is a portable, high-speed imaging photometer designed to study faint astronomical objects at high temporal resolutions. ULTRACAM employs two dichroic beamsplitters and three frame-transfer CCD cameras to provide three-colour optical imaging at frame rates of up to 500 Hz. The instrument has been mounted on both the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope on La Palma and the 8.2-m Very Large Telescope in Chile, and has been used to study white dwarfs, brown dwarfs, pulsars, black-hole/neutron-star X-ray binaries, gamma-ray bursts, cataclysmic variables, eclipsing binary stars, extrasolar planets, flare stars, ultra-compact binaries, active galactic nuclei, asteroseismology and occultations by Solar System objects (Titan, Pluto and Kuiper Belt objects). In this paper we describe the scientific motivation behind ULTRACAM, present an outline of its design and report on its measured performance.

Photoinduced 3D orientational order in side chain liquid crystalline azopolymers

We apply experimental technique based on the combination of methods dealing with principal refractive indices and absorption coefficients to study the photoinduced 3D orientational order in the films of liquid crystalline (LC) azopolymers. The technique is used to identify 3D orientational configurations of trans azobenzene chromophores and to characterize the degree of ordering in terms of order parameters. We study two types of LC azopolymers which form structures with preferred in-plane and out-of-plane alignment of azochromophores, correspondingly. Using irradiation with the polarized light of two different wavelengths we find that the kinetics of photoinduced anisotropy can be dominated by either photo-reorientation or photoselection mechanisms depending on the wavelength. We formulate the phenomenological model describing the kinetics of photoinduced anisotropy in terms of the isomer concentrations and the order parameter tensor. We present the numerical results for absorption coefficients that are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The model is also used to interpret the effect of changing the mechanism with the wavelength of the pumping light.

Sparticle Production in Electron-Photon Collisions

We explore the potential of electron-photon colliders to measure fundamental supersymmetry parameters via the processes $eγ\to \tilde e \tildeχ^0$ (selectron-neutralino) and $eγ\to \tildeν\tildeχ^-$ (sneutrino-chargino). Given the $\tildeχ^0$ and $\tildeχ^-$ masses from $e^+e^-$ and hadron collider studies, cross section ratios $σ(γ_-)/σ(γ_+)$ for opposite photon helicities determine the $\tildeν_L$, $\tilde e_L$ and $\tilde e_R$ masses, independent of the sparticle branching fractions. The difference $m_{\tildeν_L}^2-m_{\tilde e_L}^2$ measures $M_W^2\cos2β$ in a model-independent way. The $\tilde e_L$ and $\tilde e_R$ masses test the universality of soft supersymmetry breaking scalar masses. The cross section normalizations provide information about the gaugino mixing parameters.

Detecting and Studying $e^+e^-\to H^0A^0,H^+H^-$ in the MSSM: Implications of Supersymmetric Decays and Discriminating GUT Scenarios

We demonstrate that supersymmetric decays, as typified by the predictions of several GUT-scale boundary condition choices, do not prevent detection of $Z^* \to H^0A^0,H^+H^-$, at a $1-4$ TeV $e^+e^-$ or $μ^+μ^-$ collider operating at anticipated luminosity. For much of parameter space the relative branching ratios for various SUSY and non-SUSY decays can be measured with sufficient accuracy that different GUT-scale boundary condition choices can be distinguished from one another at a very high confidence level.
