Magnetic excitations in the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$

We report on high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of magnetic excitations in the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$. Frequency-field diagrams of ESR excitations are measured for different orientations of magnetic fields up to 25 T. We show that the substantial zero-field energy gap, $Δ\approx9.5$ K, observed in the low-temperature excitation spectrum of Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ [Zvyagin $et~al.$, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 077206 (2014)], is present well above $T_N$. Noticeably, the transition into the long-range magnetically ordered phase does not significantly affect the size of the gap, suggesting that even below $T_N$ the high-energy spin dynamics in Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ is determined by short-range-order spin correlations. The experimental data are compared with results of model spin-wave-theory calculations for spin-1/2 triangle-lattice antiferromagnet.

Direct determination of exchange parameters in Cs2CuBr4 and Cs2CuCl4: high-field ESR studies

Spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ and Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ with distorted triangular-lattice structures are studied by means of electron spin resonance spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to the saturation field and above. In the magnetically saturated phase, quantum fluctuations are fully suppressed, and the spin dynamics is defined by ordinary magnons. This allows us to accurately describe the magnetic excitation spectra in both materials and, using the harmonic spin-wave theory, to determine their exchange parameters. The viability of the proposed method was proven by applying it to Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$, yielding $J/k_B=4.7(2)$ K, $J'/k_B=1.42(7)$ K [$J'/J\simeq 0.30$] and revealing good agreement with inelastic neutron-scattering results. For the isostructural Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$, we obtain $J/k_B=14.9(7)$ K, $J'/k_B=6.1(3)$ K, [$J'/J\simeq 0.41$], providing exact and conclusive information on the exchange couplings in this frustrated spin system.

Magnetic excitations in the spin-1 anisotropic antiferromagnet $NiCl_2-4SC(NH_2)_2$

The spin-1 anisotropic antiferromagnet NiCl_2-4SC(NH2)_2 exhibits a field-induced quantum phase transition that is formally analogous to Bose-Einstein condensation. Here we present results of systematic high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) experimental and theoretical studies of this compound with a special emphasis on single-ion two-magnon bound states. In order to clarify some remaining discrepancies between theory and experiment, the frequency-field dependence of magnetic excitations in this material is reanalyzed. In particular, a more comprehensive interpretation of the experimental signature of single-ion two-magnon bound states is shown to be fully consistent with theoretical results. We also clarify the structure of the ESR spectrum in the so-called intermediate phase.

Magnetic properties of the Haldane-gap material NENB

Results of magnetization and high-field ESR studies of the new spin-1 Haldane-chain material [Ni(C2H8N2)2NO2](BF4) (NENB) are reported. A definite signature of the Haldane state in NENB was obtained. From the analysis of the frequency-field dependence of magnetic excitations in NENB, the spin-Hamiltonian parameters were calculated, yielding Delta = 17.4 K, g_parallel = 2.14, D = 7.5 K, and |E| = 0.7 K for the Haldane gap, g factor and the crystal-field anisotropy constants, respectively. The presence of fractional S = 1/2 chain-end states, revealed by ESR and magnetization measurements, is found to be responsible for spin-glass freezing effects. In addition, extra states in the excitation spectrum of NENB have been observed in the vicinity of the Haldane gap, which origin is discussed.

Magnetic Excitations in the Spin-1 Anisotropic Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Chain System NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$

NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN) is a quantum S=1 chain system with strong easy-pane anisotropy and a new candidate for the Bose-Einstein condensation of the spin degrees of freedom. ESR studies of magnetic excitations in DTN in fields up to 25 T are presented. Based on analysis of the single-magnon excitation mode in the high-field spin-polarized phase and previous experimental results [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 077204 (2006)], a revised set of spin-Hamiltonian parameters is obtained. Our results yield $D=8.9$ K, $J_c=2.2$ K, and $J_{a,b}=0.18$ K for the anisotropy, intrachain, and interchain exchange interactions, respectively. These values are used to calculate the antiferromagnetic phase boundary, magnetization and the frequency-field dependence of two-magnon bound-state excitations predicted by theory and observed in DTN for the first time. Excellent quantitative agreement with experimental data is obtained.

Spin-Triplet Excitons in the $S=1/2$ Gapped Antiferromagnet BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$: Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Studies

BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$, a $S=1/2$ quantum antiferromagnet with a double-layer structure of Cu$^{2+}$ ions in a distorted planar-rectangular coordination and with a dimerized spin singlet ground state, is studied by means of the electron paramagnetic resonance technique. It is argued that multiple absorptions observed at low temperatures are intimately related to a thermally-activated spin-triplet exciton superstructure. Analysis of the angular dependence of exciton modes in BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ allows us to accurately estimate anisotropy parameters. In addition, the temperature dependence of EPR intensity and linewidth is discussed.

EMR Measurements of Field-Induced Superconductor lamda-(BETS)2FexGa1-xCl4

We have performed high-field Electron Magnetic Resonance (EMR) measurements of lamda-(BETS)2FexGa1-xCl4 to clarify the role of Pi- and d-electrons in the paramagnetic (PM) and field-induced superconducting (FISC) phases. We found that this system has a non-negligible Pi-d interaction that is very sensitive to the sample cooling rate. The Pi-d interaction is weaker when the sample is rapidly cooled which might affect its FISC phase. The results of the organic alloy lamda-(BETS)2FexGa1-xCl4 (x=0.6) will be presented in this paper.

Electron Spin Resonance in sine-Gordon spin chains in the perturbative spinon regime

We report the low-temperature multi-frequency ESR studies of copper pyrimidine dinitrate, a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain with alternating $g$-tensor and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, allowing us to test a new theoretical concept proposed recently by Oshikawa and Affleck [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 5136 (1999)]. Their theory, based on bosonization and the self-energy formalism, can be applied for precise calculation of ESR parameters of $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic chains in the perturbative spinon regime. Excellent quantitative agreement between the theoretical predictions and experiment is obtained.

High Field behavior of the Spin Gap compound Sr$_2$Cu(BO$_3$)$_2$

We report magnetization and heat capacity measurements of single crystal samples of the spin gap compound Sr$_2$Cu(BO$_3$)$_2$. Low-field data show that the material has a singlet ground state comprising dimers with intradimer coupling J = 100 K. High field data reveal the role of weak interdimer coupling. For fields that are large compared to the spin gap, triplet excitations are observed for significantly smaller fields than predicted for isolated dimers, indicating that weak inter-dimer coupling leads to triplet delocalization. High field magnetization behavior at low temperatures suggests additional cooperative effects.

High Field ESR Study of the pi-d Correlated Organic Conductor lambda-(BETS)2Fe0.6Ga0.4Cl4

Submillimeter and millimeter wave electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements of the pi-d correlated organic conductor lambda-(BETS)2Fe0.6Ga0.4Cl4 have been performed. Antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) has been observed in the insulating antiferromagnetic phase, and its frequency-field dependence can be reproduced by the biaxial anisotropic AFMR theory. We find that in this alloy system, the easy-axis is near the b-axis, unlike previous results for the pure lambda-(BETS)2FeCl4 salts where it is closer to the c*-axis. We have also observed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) in the metallic phase at higher fields where the g-value is shown to be temperature and frequency dependent for field applied along the c*-axis. This behavior indicates the existence of strong pi-d interaction. Our measurements further show the magnetic anisotropy associated with the anions (the D term in the spin Hamiltonian) is |D|~0.11 cm-1.

Excitation hierarchy of the quantum sine-Gordon spin chain in strong magnetic field

The magnetic excitation spectrum of copper pyrimidine dinitrate, a material containing S=1/2 antiferromagnetic chains with alternating g-tensor and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and exhibiting a field-induced spin gap, is probed using submillimeter wave electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Ten excitation modes are resolved in the low-temperature spectrum, and their frequency-field diagram is systematically studied in magnetic fields up to 25 T. The experimental data are sufficiently detailed to make a very accurate comparison with predictions based on the quantum sine-Gordon field theory. Signatures of three breather branches and a soliton, as well as those of several multi-particle excitation modes are identified.

Field-induced structural evolution in the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO$_3$: high-field ESR study

The dimerized-incommensurate phase transition in the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO$_3$ is probed using multifrequency high-resolution electron spin resonance (ESR) technique, in magnetic fields up to 17 T. A field-induced development of the soliton-like incommensurate superstructure is clearly indicated as a pronounced increase of the ESR linewidth $ΔB$ (magnon excitations), with a $ΔB_{max}$ at $B_{c}\sim$ 13.8 T. The anomaly is explained in terms of the magnon-soliton scattering, and suggests that the soliton-like phase exists close to the boundary of the dimerized-incommensurate phase transition. In addition, magnetic excitation spectra in 0.8% Si-doped CuGeO$_3$ are studied. Suppression of the $ΔB$ anomaly observed in the doped samples suggests a collapse of the long-range-ordered soliton states upon doping, that is consistent with high-field neutron scattering experiments.

High field magnetic resonant properties of beta'-(ET)2SF5CF2SO3

A systematic electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation of the low temperature regime for the (ET)2SF5CF2SO3 system was performed in the frequency range of ~200-700 GHz, using backward wave oscillator sources, and at fields up to 25 T. Newly acquired access to the high frequency and fields shows experimental ESR results in agreement with the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigation, revealing evidence that the transition seen at 20 K is not of conventional spin-Peierls order. A significant change of the spin resonance spectrum in beta'-(ET)2SF5CF2SO3 at low temperatures, indicates a transition into a three-dimensional-antiferromagnetic (3D AFM) phase.

Long-range ferromagnetic dipolar ordering of high-spin molecular clusters

We report the first example of a transition to long-range magnetic order in a purely dipolarly interacting molecular magnet. For the magnetic cluster compound Mn6O4Br4(Et2dbm)6, the anisotropy experienced by the total spin S=12 of each cluster is so small that spin-lattice relaxation remains fast down to the lowest temperatures, thus enabling dipolar order to occur within experimental times at Tc = 0.16 K. In high magnetic fields, the relaxation rate becomes drastically reduced and the interplay between nuclear- and electron-spin lattice relaxation is revealed.

Magnetic Studies of End-Chain Spin Effects in the Haldane Gap Material Ni(C3H10N2)2N3(ClO4)

Electron spin resonance (ESR), at 9, 94, and 190 GHz, and magnetization studies on polycrystalline, powder, and ultrafine powder samples of Ni(C3H10N2)2N3(ClO4) (NINAZ) have revealed several effects arising from the Haldane phase. Using the g value of the end-chain spin $S$ as determined by ESR, our results confirm that the end-chain spins are S=1/2 and show no evidence for S=1 end-chains. In addition, the ESR signals reveal spectral weight consistent with a model describing interactions between the end-chain spins on the shortest chains and between the magnetic excitations on the chains and the end-chain spins.
