Contributions of the LAGO Collaboration to the 36th ICRC

The LAGO (Latin American Giant Observatory) observatory is an experiment that spans over Latin America in a wide range of latitudes that gives different rigidity cut offs for the enter of cosmic rays in the atmosphere. The motivation of the Observatory is to study atmospheric radiation and space weather through the measurement of the secondary emission of low energy cosmic rays at ground level using Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD). This work presents the contributions of the LAGO collaboration to the 2019 36th ICRC.

The Latin American Giant Observatory: Contributions to the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2015)

The Latin American Giant Observatory (LAGO) is an extended cosmic ray observatory composed by a network of water-Cherenkov detectors spanning over different sites located at significantly different altitudes (from sea level up to more than $5000$\,m a.s.l.) and latitudes across Latin America, covering a huge range of geomagnetic rigidity cut-offs and atmospheric absorption/reaction levels. This detection network is designed to measure the temporal evolution of the radiation flux at ground level with extreme detail. The LAGO project is mainly oriented to perform basic research in three branches: high energy phenomena, space weather and atmospheric radiation at ground level. LAGO is built and operated by the LAGO Collaboration, a non-centralized collaborative union of more than 30 institutions from ten countries. These are the contributions of the LAGO Collaboration to the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference, 30 July - 6 August 2015, The Hague, The Netherlands

Fine-structure constant constraints on dark energy: II. Extending the parameter space

Astrophysical tests of the stability of fundamental couplings, such as the fine-structure constant $α$, are a powerful probe of new physics. Recently these measurements, combined with local atomic clock tests and Type Ia supernova and Hubble parameter data, were used to constrain the simplest class of dynamical dark energy models where the same degree of freedom is assumed to provide both the dark energy and (through a dimensionless coupling, $ζ$, to the electromagnetic sector) the $α$ variation. One caveat of these analyses was that it was based on fiducial models where the dark energy equation of state was described by a single parameter (effectively its present day value, $w_0$). Here we relax this assumption and study broader dark energy model classes, including the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder and Early Dark Energy parametrizations. Even in these extended cases we find that the current data constrains the coupling $ζ$ at the $10^{-6}$ level and $w_0$ to a few percent (marginalizing over other parameters), thus confirming the robustness of earlier analyses. On the other hand, the additional parameters are typically not well constrained. We also highlight the implications of our results for constraints on violations of the Weak Equivalence Principle and improvements to be expected from forthcoming measurements with high-resolution ultra-stable spectrographs.

Integral Field Spectroscopy of HII region complexes. The outer disk of NGC 6946

Integral Field Spectroscopy obtained with PPak and the 3.5m telescope at the Calar Alto Observatory has been used to study an outer HII region complex in the well studied galaxy NGC 6946. This technique provides detailed maps of the region in different emission lines yielding spatially resolved information about the physical properties of the gas. The configuration was chosen to cover the whole spectrum from 3600 up to 10000 A. We selected four luminous knots, to perform a detailed integrated spectroscopic analysis of these structures and of the whole PPak field-of-view (FOV). For all the knots the electron density has been found to be very similar and below 100 cm^-3. The [OIII] electron temperature was measured in knots A, B, C and in the integrated PPak-field, and was found to be around 8000 K. The temperatures of [OII] and [SIII] were estimated in the four cases. The elemental abundances computed from the "direct method" are typical of high metallicity disk HII regions, with a mean value of 12+log(O/H)= 8.65, comparable to what has been found in this galaxy by other authors for regions at similar galactocentric distance. Therefore, a remarkable abundance uniformity is found despite the different excitations found throughout the nebula. Wolf-Rayet features have been detected in three of the knots, leading to a derived total number of WR stars of 125, 22 and 5, for knots A, C and B, respectively. The integrated spectrum of the whole PPak FOV shows high excitation and a relatively evolved age which does not correspond to the individual knot evolutionary stages. Some effects associated to the loss of spatial resolution could also be evidenced by the higher ionising temperature that is deduced from the eta' parameter measured in the integrated PPak spectrum with respect to that of the individual knots.

Universal Fluctuations in Correlated Systems

The probability density function (PDF) of a global measure in a large class of highly correlated systems has been suggested to be of the same functional form. Here, we identify the analytical form of the PDF of one such measure, the order parameter in the low temperature phase of the 2D-XY model. We demonstrate that this function describes the fluctuations of global quantities in other correlated, equilibrium and non-equilibrium systems. These include a coupled rotor model, Ising and percolation models, models of forest fires, sand-piles, avalanches and granular media in a self organized critical state. We discuss the relationship with both Gaussian and extremal statistics.
