Standard Model with Partial Gauge Invariance

We argue that an exact gauge invariance may disable some generic features of the Standard Model which could otherwise manifest themselves at high energies. One of them might be related to the spontaneous Lorentz invariance violation (SLIV) which could provide an alternative dynamical approach to QED and Yang-Mills theories with photon and non-Abelian gauge fields appearing as massless Nambu-Goldstone bosons. To see some key features of the new physics expected we propose partial rather than exact gauge invariance in an extended SM framework. This principle applied, in some minimal form, to the weak hypercharge gauge field B_{mu} and its interactions leads to SLIV with B field components appearing as the massless Nambu-Goldstone modes, and provides a number of distinctive Lorentz beaking effects. Being naturally suppressed at low energies they may become detectable in high energy physics and astrophysics. Some of the most interesting SLIV processes are considered in significant detail.

Spontaneously Generated Tensor Field Gravity

An arbitrary local theory of a symmetric two-tensor field $H_{μν}$ in Minkowski spacetime is considered, in which the equations of motion are required to be compatible with a nonlinear length-fixing constraint $H_{μν}^{2}=\pm M^{2}$ leading to spontaneous Lorentz invariance violation, SLIV ($M$ is the proposed scale for SLIV). Allowing the parameters in the Lagrangian to be adjusted so as to be consistent with this constraint, the theory turns out to correspond to linearized general relativity in the weak field approximation, while some of the massless tensor Goldstone modes appearing through SLIV are naturally collected in the physical graviton. In essence the underlying diffeomophism invariance emerges as a necessary condition for the tensor field $H_{μν}$ not to be superfluously restricted in degrees of freedom, apart from the constraint due to which the true vacuum in the theory is chosen by SLIV. The emergent theory appears essentially nonlinear, when expressed in terms of the pure Goldstone tensor modes and contains a plethora of new Lorentz and $CPT$ violating couplings. However, these couplings do not lead to physical Lorentz violation once this tensor field gravity is properly extended to conventional general relativity.

Graviton as a Goldstone boson: Nonlinear Sigma Model for Tensor Field Gravity

Spontaneous Lorentz invariance violation (SLIV) realized through a nonlinear tensor field constraint H_{}^2=\pm M^2 (M is the proposed scale for Lorentz violation) is considered in tensor field gravity theory, which mimics linearized general relativity in Minkowski space-time. We show that such a SLIV pattern, due to which the true vacuum in the theory is chosen, induces massless tensor Goldstone modes some of which can naturally be associated with the physical graviton. When expressed in terms of the pure Goldstone modes, this theory looks essentially nonlinear and contains a variety of Lorentz and CPT violating couplings. Nonetheless, all SLIV effects turn out to be strictly cancelled in all the lowest order processes considered, provided that the tensor field gravity theory is properly extended to general relativity (GR). So, as we generally argue, the measurable effects of SLIV, induced by elementary vector or tensor fields, are related to the accompanying gauge symmetry breaking rather than to spontaneous Lorentz violation. The latter appears by itself to be physically unobservable, only resulting in a non-covariant gauge choice in an otherwise gauge invariant and Lorentz invariant theory. However, while Goldstonic vector and tensor field theories with exact local invariance are physically indistinguishable from conventional gauge theories, there might appear some principal distinctions if this local symmetry were slightly broken at very small distances controlled by quantum gravity in an explicit, rather than spontaneous, way that could eventually allow one to differentiate between them observationally.

Vector-Field Domain Walls

We argue that spontaneous Lorentz violation may generally lead to metastable domain walls related to the simultaneous violation of some accompanying discrete symmetries. Remarkably, such domain wall solutions exist for space-like Lorentz violation and do not exist for the time-like violation. Because a preferred space direction is spontaneously induced, these domain walls have no planar symmetry and produce a peculiar static gravitational field at small distances, while their long-distance gravity appears the same as for regular scalar-field walls. Some possible applications of vector-field domain walls are briefly discussed.

Deriving Gauge Symmetry and Spontaneous Lorentz Violation

We consider a class of field theories with a four-vector field $A_μ(x)$ in addition to other fields supplied with a global charge symmetry - theories which have partial gauge symmetry in the sense of only imposing it on those terms in the Lagrangian density which have derivatives as factors in them. We suppose that spontaneous Lorentz invariance breaking occurs in such a theory due to the four-vector field taking a non-zero vacuum expectation value. Under some very mild assumptions, we show that this Lorentz violation is not observable and the whole theory is practically gauge invariant. A very important presupposition for this theorem is that an initial condition is imposed on the no-derivative expressions corresponding to the early Universe being essentially in a vacuum state. This condition then remains true forever and can be interpreted as a gauge constraint. We formulate the conditions under which the spontaneous Lorentz violation becomes observable. Spontaneously broken Lorentz invariance could be seen by some primordially existing or created "fossil" charges with the property of moving through the Universe with a fixed velocity.

Spontaneous Lorentz Violation via QED with Non-Exact Gauge Invariance

We reconsider an alternative theory of the QED with the photon as a massless vector Nambu-Goldstone boson and show that the underlying spontaneous Lorentz violation caused by the vector field vacuum expectation value, while being superficial in gauge invariant theory, becomes physically significant in the QED with a tiny gauge non-invariance. This leads, through special dispersion relations appearing for charged fermions, to a new class of phenomena which could be of distinctive observational interest in particle physics and astrophysics. They include a significant change in the GZK cutoff for UHE cosmic-ray nucleons, stability of high-energy pions and W bosons, modification of nucleon beta decays, and some others.

Constrained Gauge Fields from Spontaneous Lorentz Violation

Spontaneous Lorentz violation realized through a nonlinear vector field constraint of the type $A_μA^μ=M^{2}$ ($M$ is the proposed scale for Lorentz violation) is shown to generate massless vector Goldstone bosons, gauging the starting global internal symmetries in arbitrary relativistically invariant theories. The gauge invariance appears in essence as a necessary condition for these bosons not to be superfluously restricted in degrees of freedom, apart from the constraint due to which the true vacuum in a theory is chosen by the Lorentz violation. In the Abelian symmetry case the only possible theory proves to be QED with a massless vector Goldstone boson naturally associated with the photon, while the non-Abelian symmetry case results in a conventional Yang-Mills theory. These theories, both Abelian and non-Abelian, look essentially nonlinear and contain particular Lorentz (and $CPT$) violating couplings when expressed in terms of the pure Goldstone vector modes. However, they do not lead to physical Lorentz violation due to the simultaneously generated gauge invariance.

Spontaneous Lorentz Violation: Non-Abelian Gauge Fields as Pseudo-Goldstone Vector Bosons

We argue that non-Abelian gauge fields can be treated as the pseudo-Goldstone vector bosons caused by spontaneous Lorentz invariance violation (SLIV). To this end, the SLIV which evolves in a general Yang-Mills type theory with the nonlinear vector field constraint $Tr(% \boldsymbol{A}_{μ}\boldsymbol{A}^μ)=\pm M^{2}$ ($M$ is a proposed SLIV scale) imposed is considered in detail. With an internal symmetry group $G$ having $D$ generators not only the pure Lorentz symmetry SO(1,3), but the larger accidental symmetry $SO(D,3D)$ of the SLIV constraint in itself appears to be spontaneously broken as well. As a result, while the pure Lorentz violation still generates only one genuine Goldstone vector boson, the accompanying pseudo-Goldstone vector bosons related to the $SO(D,3D)$ breaking also come into play in the final arrangement of the entire Goldstone vector field multiplet. Remarkably, they remain strictly massless, being protected by gauge invariance of the Yang-Mills theory involved. We show that, although this theory contains a plethora of Lorentz and $CPT$ violating couplings, they do not lead to physical SLIV effects which turn out to be strictly cancelled in all the lowest order processes considered. However, the physical Lorentz violation could appear if the internal gauge invariance were slightly broken at very small distances influenced by gravity. For the SLIV scale comparable with the Planck one the Lorentz violation could become directly observable at low energies.

Massless and Massive Vector Goldstone Bosons in Nonlinear Quantum Electrodynamics

The spontaneous Lorentz invariance violation (SLIV) developing in QED type theories with the nonlinear four-vector field constraint $A_μ^{2}=M^{2}$ (where $M$ is a proposed scale of the Lorentz violation) is considered in the case when the internal U(1) charge symmetry is also spontaneously broken. We show that such a SLIV pattern induces the genuine vector Goldstone boson which appears massless when the U(1) symmetry is exact and becomes massive in its broken phase. However, for both of phases an apparent Lorentz violation is completely canceled out in all the observable processes so that the physical Lorentz invariance in theory is ultimately restored.

Nonlinear QED and Physical Lorentz Invariance

The spontaneous breakdown of 4-dimensional Lorentz invariance in the framework of QED with the nonlinear vector potential constraint A_μ^{2}=M^{2}(where M is a proposed scale of the Lorentz violation) is shown to manifest itself only as some noncovariant gauge choice in the otherwise gauge invariant (and Lorentz invariant) electromagnetic theory. All the contributions to the photon-photon, photon-fermion and fermion-fermion interactions violating the physical Lorentz invariance happen to be exactly cancelled with each other in the manner observed by Nambu a long ago for the simplest tree-order diagrams - the fact which we extend now to the one-loop approximation and for both the time-like (M^{2}>0) and space-like (M^{2}<0) Lorentz violation. The way how to reach the physical breaking of the Lorentz invariance in the pure QED case taken in the flat Minkowskian space-time is also discussed in some detail.

Photon as a Vector Goldstone Boson: Nonlinear $σ$ Model for QED

We show that QED in the Coulomb gauge can be considered as a low energy linear approximation of a non-linear $σ$-type model where the photon emerges as a vector Goldstone boson related to the spontaneous breakdown of Lorentz symmetry down to its spatial rotation subgroup at some high scale $M$. Starting with a general massive vector field theory one naturally arrives at this model if the pure spin-1 value for the vector field $A_μ(x)$ provided by the Lorentz condition $\partial_μA_μ(x)=0$ is required. The model coincides with conventional QED in the Coulomb gauge in the limit of M going to infinity and generates a very particular form for the Lorentz and CPT symmetry breaking terms, which are suppressed by powers of $M$.

Minimal Mixing of Quarks and Leptons in the SU(3) Theory of Flavour

We argue that flavour mixing, both in the quark and lepton sector, follows the minimal mixing pattern, according to which the whole of this mixing is basically determined by the physical mass generation for the first family of fermions. So, in the chiral symmetry limit when the masses of the lightest ($u$ and $d$) quarks vanish, all the quark mixing angles vanish. This minimal pattern is shown to fit extremely well the already established CKM matrix elements and to give fairly distinctive predictions for the as yet poorly known ones. Remarkably, together with generically small quark mixing, it also leads to large neutrino mixing, provided that neutrino masses appear through the ordinary ``see-saw'' mechanism. It is natural to think that this minimal flavour mixing pattern presupposes some underlying family symmetry, treating families of quarks and leptons in a special way. Indeed, we have found a local chiral $SU(3)_{F}$ family symmetry model which leads, through its dominant symmetry breaking vacuum configuration, to a natural realization of the proposed minimal mechanism. It can also naturally generate the quark and lepton mass hierarchies. Furthermore spontaneous CP violation is possible, leading to a maximal CP violating phase $δ=\fracπ{2}$, in the framework of the MSSM extended by a high-scale $SU(3)_{F}$ chiral family symmetry.

Minimal Flavour Mixing of Quarks and Leptons

Present situation in the flavour mixing of quarks and leptons is briefly reviewed and a new approach called the Minimal Flavour Mixing (MFM) is considered in detail. According to MFM the whole of the flavour mixing is basically determined by the physical mass generation of the first family of fermions. So, in the chiral symmetry limit when the masses of the lightest quarks, u and d, vanish, all the weak mixing angle vanish. This minimal pattern is shown to fit extremely well the already established CKM matrix elements and to give fairly distinctive predictions for the as yet poorly known ones. Remarkably, together with generically small quark mixing it also leads to the large neutrino mixing thus giving adequate solution to the solar and athmospheric neutrino oscillation problem. The possible origin of this approach in the MSSM extended by the high-scale $SU(3)_{F}$ chiral family symmetry is discussed.

Composite quarks and leptons in higher space-time dimensions

A new approach towards the composite structure of quarks and leptons in the context of the higher dimensional unified theories is proposed. Owing to the certain strong dynamics, much like an ordinary QCD, every possible vectorlike multiplets of composites appear in higher dimensional bulk space-time, however, through a proper Sherk-Schwarz compactification only chiral set of composite quarks and leptons survive as the massless states in four dimensions. In this scenario restrictions related with the 't Hooft's anomaly matching condition are turned out to be avoided and, as a result, the composite models look rather simple and economic. We demonstrate our approach by an explicit construction of model of preons and their composites unified in the supersymmetric SU(5) GUT in five space-time dimensions. The model predicts exactly three families of the composite quarks and leptons being the triplets of the chiral horizontal symmetry SU(3)_h which automatically appears in the composite spectrum when going to ordinary four dimensions.

Spontaneously Generated Gauge Invariance

We argue that the non-observability of the spontaneous breakdown of Lorentz symmetry (SBLS) caused by the vacuum expectation values of vector fields could provide the origin of all internal symmetries observed. Remarkably, the application of this principle to the most general relativistically invariant Lagrangian, with arbitrary couplings for all the fields involved, leads by itself to the appearance of a symmetry and, what is more, to the massless vector field(s) gauging this symmetry. A simple model for the SBLS based on massive vector and real scalar field interactions is considered; it is found that spontaneously broken gauge symmetries could also appear, when SBLS happens and is required to be physically unobservable.

Lorentz Invariance and Origin of Symmetries

In this letter we reconsider the role of Lorentz invariance in the dynamical generation of the observed internal symmetries. We argue that, generally, Lorentz invariance can only be imposed in the sense that all Lorentz non-invariant effects caused by the spontaneous breakdown of Lorentz symmetry are physically unobservable. Remarkably, the application of this principle to the most general relativistically invariant Lagrangian, with arbitrary couplings for all the fields involved, leads by itself to the appearance of a symmetry and, what is more, to the massless vector fields gauging this symmetry in both Abelian and non-Abelian cases. In contrast, purely global symmetries are only generated as accidental consequences of the gauge symmetry.

Lepton Number Violation in Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories

We argue that the nature of the global conservation laws in Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories is determined by the basic vacuum configuration in the model rather than its Lagrangian. It is shown that the suppression of baryon number violation in a general (R-parity violating) superpotential can naturally appear in some extended SU(N) SUSY GUTs which, among other degenerate symmetry-breaking vacua, have a missing VEV vacuum configuration giving a solution to the doublet-triplet splitting problem. We construct SU(7) and SU(8) GUTs where the effective lepton number violating couplings immediately evolve, while the baryon number non-conserving ones are safely projected out as the GUT symmetry breaks down to that of the MSSM. However at the next stage, when SUSY breaks, the radiative corrections shift the missing VEV components to some nonzero values of order M_{SUSY}, thereby inducing the ordinary Higgs doublet mass, on the one hand, and tiny baryon number violation, on the other. So, a missing VEV solution to the gauge hierarchy problem leads at the same time to a similar hierarchy of baryon vs lepton number violation.

Among them are a solution to the doublet-triplet splitting problem, string scale unification, proton decay, the hierarchy of baryon vs lepton number violation and neutrino masses.
