About Locality and the Relativity Principle Beyond Special Relativity

Locality of interactions is an essential ingredient of Special Relativity. Recently, a new framework under the name of relative locality \cite{AmelinoCamelia:2011bm} has been proposed as a way to consider Planckian modifications of the relativistic dynamics of particles. We note in this paper that the loss of absolute locality is a general feature of theories beyond Special Relativity with an implementation of a relativity principle. We give an explicit construction of such an implementation and compare it both with the previously mentioned framework of relative locality and the so-called Doubly Special Relativity theories.

Asymptotic approach to Special Relativity compatible with a relativistic principle

We propose a general framework to describe Planckian deviations from Special Relativity (SR) compatible with a relativistic principle. They are introduced as the leading corrections in an asymptotic approach to SR going beyond the energy power expansion of effective field theories. We discuss the conditions in which these Planckian effects might be experimentally observable in the near future, together with the non-trivial limits of applicability of this asymptotic approach that such a situation would produce, both at the very high (ultraviolet) and the very low (infrared) energy regimes.

Quantum Noncanonical Field Theory: Symmetries and Interaction

The symmetry properties of a proposal to go beyond relativistic quantum field theory based on a modification of the commutation relations of fields are identified. Poincaré invariance in an auxiliary spacetime is found in the Lagrangian version of the path integral formulation. This invariance is contrasted with the idea of Doubly (or Deformed) Special Relativity (DSR). This analysis is then used to go from the free theory of a complex field to an interacting field theory.

An extension of the cosmological standard model with a bounded Hubble expansion rate

The possibility of having an extension of the cosmological standard model with a Hubble expansion rate $H$ constrained to a finite interval is considered. Two periods of accelerated expansion arise naturally when the Hubble expansion rate approaches to the two limiting values. The new description of the history of the universe is confronted with cosmological data and with several theoretical ideas going beyond the standard cosmological model.

Linearized Treatment of Scalar perturbations in the Asymptotic Cosmological Model

In this paper the implications of a recently proposed phenomenological model of cosmology, the Asymptotic Cosmological Model (ACM), on the behavior of scalar perturbations are studied. Firstly we discuss new fits of the ACM at the homogeneous level, including fits to the Type Ia Supernovae UNION dataset, first CMB peak of WMAP5 and BAOs. The linearized equations of scalar perturbations in the FRW metric are derived. A simple model is used to compute the CMB temperature perturbation spectrum. The results are compared with the treatment of perturbations in other approaches to the problem of the accelerated expansion of the universe.

An Adiabatic Approximation to the Path Integral for Relativistic Fermionic Fields

A new approach to the path integral over fermionic fields, based on the extension of a reformulation of the adiabatic approximation to some quantum mechanical systems, is presented. A novel non-analytic contribution to the efective fermionic action for a fermion field coupled to a non-Abelian vector field is identified. The possible interpretation of this contribution as a violation of the decoupling theorem in Quantum Field Theory (QFT) is discussed. The generalization of the approach to the case of finite temperature and density suggests the possibility to apply it to the understanding of non-perturbative properties in QFT and their dependence on temperature and density.

Quantum Uncertainty in Doubly Special Relativity

The modification of the quantum mechanical commutators in a relativistic theory with an invariant length scale (DSR) is identified. Two examples are discussed where a classical behavior is approached in one case when the energy approaches the inverse of the invariant length which appears as a cutoff in the energy and in the second case when the mass is much larger than the inverse of the invariant length.

Particle and Antiparticle sectors in DSR1 and kappa-Minkowski space-time

In this paper we explore the problem of antiparticles in DSR1 and $κ$-Minkowski space-time following three different approaches inspired by the Lorentz invariant case: a) the dispersion relation, b) the Dirac equation in space-time and c) the Dirac equation in momentum space. We find that it is possible to define a map $S_{dsr}$ which gives the antiparticle sector from the negative frequency solutions of the wave equation. In $κ$-Poincaré, the corresponding map $S_{kp}$ is the antipodal mapping, which is different from $S_{dsr}$. The difference is related to the composition law, which is crucial to define the multiparticle sector of the theory. This discussion permits to show that the energy of the antiparticle in DSR is the positive root of the dispersion relation, which is consistent with phenomenological approaches.

Noncommutativity in Field Space and Lorentz Invariance Violation

The connection between Lorentz invariance violation and noncommutativity of fields in a quantum field theory is investigated. A new dispersion relation for a free field theory with just one additional noncommutative parameter is obtained. While values for the noncommutative scale much larger than 10^{-20} eV^{-1} are ruled out by the present experimental status, cosmic ray physics would be compatible with and sensible to a noncommutativity arising from quantum gravity effects. We explore the matter-antimatter asymmetry which is naturally present in this framework.

Quantum Theory of Noncommutative Fields

Generalizing the noncommutative harmonic oscillator construction, we propose a new extension of quantum field theory based on the concept of "noncommutative fields". Our description permits to break the usual particle-antiparticle degeneracy at the dispersion relation level and introduces naturally an ultraviolet and an infrared cutoff. Phenomenological bounds for these new energy scales are given.

Does a relativistic metric generalization of Newtonian gravity exist in 2+1 dimensions?

It is shown that, contrary to previous claims, a scalar tensor theory of Brans-Dicke type provides a relativistic generalization of Newtonian gravity in 2+1 dimensions. The theory is metric and test particles follow the space-time geodesics. The static isotropic solution is studied in vacuum and in regions filled with an incompressible perfect fluid. It is shown that the solutions can be consistently matched at the matter vacuum interface, and that the Newtonian behavior is recovered in the weak field regime.

Infrared and ultraviolet cutoffs of quantum field theory

Quantum gravity arguments and the entropy bound for effective field theories proposed in PRL 82, 4971 (1999) lead to consider two correlated scales which parametrize departures from relativistic quantum field theory at low and high energies. A simple estimate of their possible phenomenological implications leads to identify a scale of around 100 TeV as an upper limit on the domain of validity of a quantum field theory description of Nature. This fact agrees with recent theoretical developments in large extra dimensions. Phenomenological consequences in the beta-decay spectrum and cosmic ray physics associated to possible Lorentz invariance violations induced by the infrared scale are discussed. It is also suggested that this scale might produce new unexpected effects at the quantum level.

Testing Lorentz invariance violations in the tritium beta-decay anomaly

We consider a Lorentz non-invariant dispersion relation for the neutrino, which would produce unexpected effects with neutrinos of few eV, exactly where the tritium beta-decay anomaly is found. We use this anomaly to put bounds on the violation of Lorentz invariance. We discuss other consequences of this non-invariant dispersion relation in neutrino experiments and high-energy cosmic-ray physics.

Mass protection via translational invariance

We propose a way of protecting a Dirac fermion interacting with a scalar field from acquiring a mass from the vacuum. It is obtained through an implementation of translational symmetry when the theory is formulated with a momentum cutoff, which forbids the usual Yukawa term. We consider that this mechanism can help to understand the smallness of neutrino masses without a tuning of the Yukawa coupling. The prohibition of the Yukawa term for the neutrino forbids at the same time a gauge coupling between the right-handed electron and neutrino. We prove that this mechanism can be implemented on the lattice.

A new mechanism of mass protection for fermions

We present a way of protecting a Dirac fermion interacting with a scalar (Higgs) field from getting a mass from the vacuum.
