A Note on Black Hole Entropy and Wormhole Instabilities

We discuss recent approaches to the computation of black hole entropies through semiclassical estimates of appropriate state overlaps, saturated by Euclidean wormhole configurations. We notice that the relevant saddle-point manifolds may exhibit instabilities, thereby compromising the interpretation of the Euclidean path integral as a tool for computing positive-definite inner products. We show that a proper treatment using a microcanonical formulation effectively addresses the puzzles posed by these instabilities.

A Generalized Momentum/Complexity Correspondence

Holographic complexity, in the guise of the Complexity = Volume prescription, comes equipped with a natural correspondence between its rate of growth and the average infall momentum of matter in the bulk. This Momentum/Complexity correspondence can be related to an integrated version of the momentum constraint of general relativity. In this paper we propose a generalization, using the full Codazzi equations as a starting point, which successfully accounts for purely gravitational contributions to infall momentum. The proposed formula is explicitly checked in an exact pp-wave solution of the vacuum Einstein equations.

Proof of a Momentum/Complexity Correspondence

We show that the holographic Complexity = Volume proposal satisfies a very general notion of Momentum/Complexity correspondence (PC), based on the Momentum Constraint of General Relativity. It relates the rate of complexity variation with an appropriate matter momentum flux through spacelike extremal surfaces. This formalizes the intuitive idea that `gravitational clumpling' of matter increases complexity, and the required notion of `infall momentum' is shown to have a Newtonian avatar which expresses this idea. The proposed form of the PC correspondence is found to be exact for any solution of Einstein's equations in 2+1 dimensions, and any spherically symmetric solution in arbitrary dimensions, generalizing all previous calculations using spherical thin shells. Gravitational radiation enters through a correction which does not have a straightforward interpretation as a PC correspondence. Other obstructions to an exact PC duality have a topological origin and arise in the presence of wormholes.

Remarks on the thermodynamic stability of TT-bar deformations

We point out that negative specific heat at high energies is a characteristic feature of many TT-bar deformations, both in the original d = 2 case and in d = 1 quantum mechanical cousins. This note is a contribution to the memorial volume in honor of P. G. O. Freund.

On The Evolution Of Operator Complexity Beyond Scrambling

We study operator complexity on various time scales with emphasis on those much larger than the scrambling period. We use, for systems with a large but finite number of degrees of freedom, the notion of K-complexity employed in arXiv:1812.08657 for infinite systems. We present evidence that K-complexity of ETH operators has indeed the character associated with the bulk time evolution of extremal volumes and actions. Namely, after a period of exponential growth during the scrambling period the K-complexity increases only linearly with time for exponentially long times in terms of the entropy, and it eventually saturates at a constant value also exponential in terms of the entropy. This constant value depends on the Hamiltonian and the operator but not on any extrinsic tolerance parameter. Thus K-complexity deserves to be an entry in the AdS/CFT dictionary. Invoking a concept of K-entropy and some numerical examples we also discuss the extent to which the long period of linear complexity growth entails an efficient randomization of operators.

Higgs Inflation as a Mirage

We discuss a simple unitarization of Higgs inflation that is genuinely weakly coupled up to Planckian energies. A large non-minimal coupling between the Higgs and the Ricci curvature is induced dynamically at intermediate energies, as a simple ratio of mass scales. Despite not being dominated by the Higgs field, inflationary dynamics simulates the `Higgs inflation' one would get by blind extrapolation of the low-energy effective Lagrangian, at least qualitatively. Hence, Higgs inflation arises as an approximate `mirage' picture of the true dynamics. We further speculate on the generality of this phenomenon and show that, if Higgs-inflation arises as an effective description, the details of the UV completion are necessary to extract robust quantitative predictions.

Fast Scramblers Of Small Size

We investigate various geometrical aspects of the notion of `optical depth' in the thermal atmosphere of black hole horizons. Optical depth has been proposed as a measure of fast-crambling times in such black hole systems, and the associated optical metric suggests that classical chaos plays a leading role in the actual scrambling mechanism. We study the behavior of the optical depth with the size of the system and find that AdS/CFT phase transitions with topology change occur naturally as the scrambler becomes smaller than its thermal length. In the context of detailed AdS/CFT models based on D-branes, T-duality implies that small scramblers are described in terms of matrix quantum mechanics.

AdS Crunches, CFT Falls And Cosmological Complementarity

We discuss aspects of the holographic description of crunching AdS cosmologies. We argue that crunching FRW models with hyperbolic spatial sections are dual to semiclassical condensates in deformed de Sitter CFTs. De Sitter-invariant condensates with a sharply defined energy scale are induced by effective negative-definite relevant or marginal operators, which may or may not destabilize the CFT. We find this result by explicitly constructing a `complementarity map' for this model, given by a conformal transformation of the de Sitter CFT into a static time-frame, which reveals the crunch as an infinite potential-energy fall in finite time. We show that, quite generically, the crunch is associated to a finite mass black hole if the de Sitter O(d,1)-invariance is an accidental IR symmetry, broken down to U(1)xO(d) in the UV. Any such regularization cuts off the eternity of de Sitter space-time. Equivalently, the dimension of the Hilbert space propagating into the crunch is finite only when de Sitter is not eternal.

On the Naturalness of Higgs Inflation

We critically examine the recent claim that the Standard Model Higgs boson ${\cal H}$ could drive inflation in agreement with observations if $|{\cal H}|^2$ has a strong coupling $ξ\sim 10^4$ to the Ricci curvature scalar. We first show that the effective theory approach upon which that claim is based ceases to be valid beyond a cutoff scale $Λ=m_p/ξ$, where $m_p$ is the reduced Planck mass. We then argue that knowing the Higgs potential profile for the field values relevant for inflation ($|{\cal H}|>m_p/\sqrtξ\gg Λ$) requires knowledge of the ultraviolet completion of the SM beyond $Λ$. In absence of such microscopic theory, the extrapolation of the pure SM potential beyond $Λ$ is unwarranted and the scenario is akin to other ad-hoc inflaton potentials afflicted with significant fine-tuning. The appealing naturalness of this minimal proposal is therefore lost.

A note on the topological order of noncommutative Hall fluids

We evaluate the ground state degeneracy of noncommutative Chern-Simons models on the two-torus, a quantity that is interpreted as the "topological order" of associated phases of Hall fluids. We define the noncommutative theory via T-duality from an ordinary Chern-Simons model with non-abelian 't Hooft magnetic fluxes. Motivated by this T-duality, we propose a discrete family of noncommutative, non-abelian fluid models, arising as a natural generalization of the standard noncommutative Chern-Simons effective models. We compute the topological order for these universality classes, and comment on their possible microscopic interpretation.

Dynamical Higgs potentials with a landscape

We consider one-loop effective potentials for adjoint Higgs fields that originate from flat holonomies in toroidal compactification of gauge theories. We show that such potentials are "landscape-like" for large gauge groups and generic non-supersymmetric matter representations. In particular, there is a large number of vacua with similar local properties, scanning a broad band of vacuum energies.

Topology Change and Unitarity in Quantum Black Hole Dynamics

We discuss to what extent semiclassical topology change is capable of restoring unitarity in the relaxation of perturbations of eternal black holes in thermal equilibrium. The Poincare recurrences required by unitarity are not correctly reproduced in detail, but their effect on infinite time-averages can be mimicked by these semiclassical topological fluctuations. We also discuss the possible implications of these facts to the question of unitarity of the black hole S-matrix.

Touring the Hagedorn Ridge

We review aspects of the Hagedorn regime in critical string theories, from basic facts about the ideal gas approximation to the proposal of a global picture inspired by general ideas of holography. It was suggested that the condensation of thermal winding modes triggers a first-order phase transition. We propose, by an Euclidean analogue of the string/black hole correspondence principle, that the transition is actually related to a topology change in spacetime. Similar phase transitions induced by unstable winding modes can be studied in toy models. There, using T-duality of supersymmetric cycles, one can identify a topology change of the Gregory--Laflamme type, which we associate with large-N phase transitions of Yang--Mills theories on tori. This essay is dedicated to the memory of Ian Kogan.

Long time scales and eternal black holes

We discuss the various scales determining the temporal behaviour of correlation functions in the presence of eternal black holes. We point out the origins of the failure of the semiclassical gravity approximation to respect a unitarity-based bound suggested by Maldacena. We find that the presence of a subleading (in the large-N approximation involved) master field does restore the compliance with one bound but additional configurations are needed to explain the more detailed expected time dependence of the Poincare recurrences and their magnitude.

AdS/CFT, Multitrace Deformations and New Instabilities of Nonlocal String Theories

We study "multitrace" deformations of large N master fields in models with a mass gap. In particular, we determine the conditions for the multitrace couplings to drive tachyonic instabilities. These tachyons represent new local instabilities of the associated nonlocal string theories. In the particular case of Dp-branes at finite temperature, we consider topology-changing phase transitions and the effect of multitrace perturbations on the corresponding phase diagrams.

Very Long Time Scales and Black Hole Thermal Equilibrium

We estimate the very long time behaviour of correlation functions in the presence of eternal black holes. It was pointed out by Maldacena (hep-th 0106112) that their vanishing would lead to a violation of a unitarity-based bound. The value of the bound is obtained from the holographic dual field theory. The correlators indeed vanish in a semiclassical bulk approximation. We trace the origin of their vanishing to the continuum energy spectrum in the presence of event horizons. We elaborate on the two very long time scales involved: one associated with the black hole and the other with a thermal gas in the vacuum background. We find that assigning a role to the thermal gas background, as suggested in the above work, does restore the compliance with a time-averaged unitarity bound. We also find that additional configurations are needed to explain the expected time dependence of the Poincaré recurrences and their magnitude. It is suggested that, while a semiclassical black hole does reproduce faithfully ``coarse grained'' properties of the system, additional dynamical features of the horizon may be necessary to resolve a finer grained information-loss problem. In particular, an effectively formed stretched horizon could yield the desired results.

Remarks on Black Hole Instabilities and Closed String Tachyons

Physical arguments stemming from the theory of black-hole thermodynamics are used to put constraints on the dynamics of closed-string tachyon condensation in Scherk--Schwarz compactifications. A geometrical interpretation of the tachyon condensation involves an effective capping of a noncontractible cycle, thus removing the very topology that supports the tachyons. A semiclassical regime is identified in which the matching between the tachyon condensation and the black-hole instability flow is possible. We formulate a generalized correspondence principle and illustrate it in several different circumstances: an Euclidean interpretation of the transition from strings to black holes across the Hagedorn temperature and instabilities in the brane-antibrane system.
