Magnetic-field-induced nonlocal effects on the vortex interactions in twin-free YBa2Cu3O7

The vortex lattice (VL) in the high-kappa superconductor YBa2Cu3O7, at 2 K and with the magnetic field parallel to the crystal c-axis, undergoes a sequence of transitions between different structures as a function of applied magnetic field. However, from structural studies alone, it is not possible to determine precisely the system anisotropy that governs the transitions between different structures. To address this question, here we report new small-angle neutron scattering measurements of both the VL structure at higher temperatures, and the field- and temperature-dependence of the VL form factor. Our measurements demonstrate how the influence of anisotropy on the VL, which in theory can be parameterized as nonlocal corrections, becomes progressively important with increasing magnetic field, and suppressed by increasing the temperature towards Tc. The data indicate that nonlocality due to different anisotropies play important roles in determining the VL properties.

Magnetic vortex lattice in HgBa2CuO4+x observed by small-angle neutron scattering

We report a direct observation of the magnetic vortex lattice in the model high-temperature superconductor HgBa2CuO4+x. Using small-angle neutron scattering on high-quality crystals, we observe two equal domains of undistorted triangular vortex lattices well-aligned with the tetragonal crystallographic axes. The signal decreases rapidly with increasing magnetic field and vanishes above 0.4 Tesla, which we attribute to a crossover from a three-dimensional to a two-dimensional vortex system, similar to previous results for the more anisotropic compound Bi2.15Sr1.95CaCu2O8+x. Our result indicates that a triangular vortex lattice at low magnetic fields is a generic property to cuprates with critical temperatures above 80 K.

The pairing state in KFe2As2 studied by measurements of the magnetic vortex lattice

Understanding the mechanism and symmetry of electron pairing in iron-based superconductors represents an important challenge in condensed matter physics [1-3]. The observation of magnetic flux lines - "vortices" - in a superconductor can contribute to this issue, because the spatial variation of magnetic field reflects the pairing. Unlike many other iron pnictides, our KFe2As2 crystals have very weak vortex pinning, allowing small-angle-neutron-scattering (SANS) observations of the intrinsic vortex lattice (VL). We observe nearly isotropic hexagonal packing of vortices, without VL-symmetry transitions up to high fields along the fourfold c-axis of the crystals, indicating rather small anisotropy of the superconducting properties around this axis. This rules out gap nodes parallel to the c-axis, and thus d-wave and also anisotropic s-wave pairing [2, 3]. The strong temperature-dependence of the intensity down to T<<Tc indicates either widely different full gaps on different Fermi surface sheets, or nodal lines perpendicular to the axis.

Observations of Pauli Paramagnetic Effects on the Flux Line Lattice in CeCoIn5

From small-angle neutron scattering studies of the flux line lattice (FLL) in CeCoIn5, with magnetic field applied parallel to the crystal c-axis, we obtain the field- and temperature-dependence of the FLL form factor, which is a measure of the spatial variation of the field in the mixed state. We extend our earlier work [A.D. Bianchi et al. 2008 Science 319, 177] to temperatures up to 1250 mK. Over the entire temperature range, paramagnetism in the flux line cores results in an increase of the form factor with field. Near H_c2 the form factor decreases again, and our results indicate that this fall-off extends outside the proposed FFLO region. Instead, we attribute the decrease to a paramagnetic suppression of Cooper pairing. At higher temperatures, a gradual crossover towards more conventional mixed state behavior is observed.

Fermi surface and order parameter driven vortex lattice structure transitions in twin-free YBa2Cu3O7

We report on small-angle neutron scattering studies of the intrinsic vortex lattice (VL) structure in detwinned YBa2Cu3O7 at 2 K, and in fields up to 10.8 T. Because of the suppressed pinning to twin-domain boundaries, a new distorted hexagonal VL structure phase is stabilized at intermediate fields. It is separated from a low-field hexagonal phase of different orientation and distortion by a first-order transition at 2.0(2) T that is probably driven by Fermi surface effects. We argue that another first-order transition at 6.7(2) T, into a rhombic structure with a distortion of opposite sign, marks a crossover from a regime where Fermi surface anisotropy is dominant, to one where the VL structure and distortion is controlled by the order-parameter anisotropy.

New structural and magnetic aspects of the nanotube system Na2V3O7

We present new experimental results of low temperature x-ray synchrotron diffraction, neutron scattering and very low temperature (mK-range) bulk measurements on the nanotube system ${\tube}$. The crystal structure determined from our data is similar to the previously proposed model (P. Millet {\it et al.} J. Solid State Chem. $\bf{147}$, 676 (1999)), but also deviates from it in significant details. The structure comprises nanotubes along the c-axis formed by stacking units of two V-rings buckled in the $ab$-plane. The space group is P$\bar{3}$ and the composition is nonstoichiometric, Na(2-x)V3O7, x=0.17. The thermal evolution of the lattice parameters reveals anisotropic lattice compression on cooling. Neutron scattering experiments monitor a very weak magnetic signal at energies from -20 to 9 meV. New magnetic susceptibility, specific heat measurements and decay of remanent magnetization in the 30 mK - 300 mK range reveal that the previously observed transition at ~76 mK is spin-glass like with no long-range order. Presented experimental observations do not support models of isolated clusters, but are compatible with a model of odd-legged S=1/2 spin tubes possibly segmented into fragments with different lengths.

Pressure induced variation of the ground state of CeAl3

Pressure-induced variations of $^{27}$Al NMR spectra of CeAl$_3$ indicate significant changes in the ground-state characteristics of this prototypical heavy-electron compound. Previously reported magnetic and electronic inhomogeneities at ambient pressure and very low temperatures are removed with external pressures exceeding 1.2 kbar. The spectra and results of corresponding measurements of the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rates indicate a pressure-induced emergence of a simple paramagnetic state involving electrons with moderately enhanced masses and no magnetic order above 65 mK.

^{63,65}Cu NMR and NQR evidence for an unusual spin dynamics in PrCu_2 below 100 K

We report the results of a $^{63,65}$Cu NMR/NQR study probing the intermetallic compound PrCu$_2$. The previously claimed onset of magnetic order at 65 K, indicated in a $μ$SR study, is not confirmed. Based on our data we discuss different possible reasons for this apparent discrepancy, including a non negligible influence of the implanted muons on their environment. Competing dipolar and quadrupolar interactions lead to unusual features of the magnetic-ion/conduction-electron system, different from those of common intermetallics exhibiting structural or magnetic instabilities.

Quenching of the Haldane gap in LiVSi2O6 and related compounds

We report results of susceptibility chi and 7Li NMR measurements on LiVSi2O6. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility chi(T) exhibits a broad maximum, typical for low-dimensional magnetic systems. Quantitatively it is in agreement with the expectation for an S=1 spin chain, represented by the structural arrangement of V ions. The NMR results indicate antiferromagnetic ordering below T_N=24 K. The intra- and interchain coupling J and J_p for LiVSi2O6, and also for its sister compounds LiVGe2O6, NaVSi2O6 and NaVGe2O6, are obtained via a modified random phase approximation which takes into account results of quantum Monte Carlo calculations. While J_p is almost constant across the series, J varies by a factor of 5, decreasing with increasing lattice constant along the chain direction. The comparison between experimental and theoretical susceptibility data suggests the presence of an easy-axis magnetic anisotropy, which explains the formation of an energy gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum below T_N, indicated by the variation of the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate at T << T_N.

Magnetic Phase Transition at 88 K in Na0.5CoO2 revealed by 23Na-NMR investigations

Na0.5CoO2 exhibits a metal-insulator transition at 53 K upon cooling. The nature of another transition at 88 K has not been fully clarified yet. We report the results of measurements of the electrical conductivity, the magnetic susceptibility and 23Na NMR on a powder sample of Na0.5CoO2, including the mapping of NMR spectra, as well as probing the spin-lattice relaxation rate and the spin-spin relaxation rate, in the temperature range between 30 K and 305 K. The NMR data reflect the transition at T_X very well but provide less evidence for the metal-insulator transition at T_MI. The temperature evolution of the shape of the spectra implies the formation of a staggered internal field below T_X, not accompained by a rearrangement of the electric charge distribution. Our results thus indicate that in Na0.5CoO2, an unusual type of magnetic ordering in the metallic phase precedes the onset of charge ordering, which finally induces an insulating ground state.

Localized versus itinerant magnetic moments in Na0.72CoO2

Based on experimental 59Co-NMR data in the temperature range between 0.1 and 300 K, we address the problem of the character of the Co 3d-electron based magnetism in Na0.7CoO2. Temperature dependent 59Co-NMR spectra reveal different Co environments below 300 K and their differentiation increases with decreasing temperature. We show that the 23Na- and 59Co-NMR data may consistently be interpreted by assuming that below room temperature the Co 3d-electrons are itinerant. Their magnetic interaction appears to favor an antiferromagnetic coupling, and we identify a substantial orbital contribution corb to the d-electron susceptibility. At low temperatures corb seems to acquire some temperature dependence, suggesting an increasing influence of spin-orbit coupling. The temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate T1-1(T) confirms significant variations in the dynamics of this electronic subsystem between 200 and 300K, as previously suggested. Below 200 K, Na0.7CoO2 may be viewed as a weak antiferromagnet with TN below 1 K but this scenario still leaves a number of open questions.

NMR and dc-susceptibility studies of NaVGe2O6

We report the results of measurements of the dc magnetic susceptibility chi(T) and of the 23Na nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) response of NaVGe2O6, a material in which the V ions form a network of interacting one-dimensional spin S=1 chains. The experiments were made at temperatures between 2.5 and 300 K. The chi(T) data suggest that the formation of the expected low-temperature Haldane phase is intercepted by an antiferromagnetic phase transition at 18 K. The transition is also reflected in the 23Na NMR spectra and the corresponding spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1(T). In the ordered phase, 1/T1(T) decreases by orders of magnitude with decreasing temperature, indicating the formation of a gap of the order of 12 K in the magnetic excitation spectrum.

Unusual magnetic properties of the low-dimensional quantum magnet Na2V3O7

We report the results of low-temperature measurements of the specific heat Cp(T), ac susceptibility chi(T) and 23Na nuclear magnetic resonance NMR of Na2V3O7. At liquid He temperatures Cp(T)/T exhibits broad field-dependent maxima, which shift to higher temperatures upon increasing the applied magnetic field H. Below 1.5 K the ac magnetic susceptibility chi(T) follows a Curie-Weiss law and exhibits a cusp at 0.086 mK which indicates a phase transition at very low temperatures. These results support the previous conjecture that Na2V3O7 is close to a quantum critical point (QCP) at mu_{0}H = 0 T. The entire data set, including results of measurements of the NMR spin-lattice relaxation 1/T1(T), reveals a complex magnetic behavior at low temperatures. We argue that it is due to a distribution of singlet-triplet energy gaps of dimerized V moments. The dimerization process evolves over a rather broad temperature range around and below 100 K. At the lowest temperatures the magnetic properties are dominated by the response of only a minor fraction of the V moments.

Evidence for s-wave superconductivity in the new beta-pyrochlore oxide RbOs2O6

We report the results of 87Rb NMR measurements on RbOs2O6, a new member of the family of the superconducting pyrochlore-type oxides with a critical temperature Tc = 6.4 K. In the normal state, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time T1 obeys the Korringa-type relation T1T = constant and the Knight shift is independent of temperature, indicating the absence of strong magnetic correlations. In the superconducting state, T1^{-1}(T) exhibits a tiny coherence enhancement just below Tc, and decreases exponentially with further decreasing temperatures. The value of the corresponding energy gap is close to that predicted by the conventional weak-coupling BCS theory. Our results indicate that RbOs2O6 is a conventional s-wave-type superconductor.

Unconventional Charge Ordering in Na0.70CoO2 below 300 K

We present the results of measurements of the dc-magnetic susceptibility chi(T) and the 23Na-NMR response of Na_{0.70}CoO_{2} at temperatures between 50 and 340 K. The chi(T) data suggest that for T > 75 K, the Co ions adopt an effective configuration of Co^{3.4+}. The 23Na-NMR response reveals pronounced anomalies near 250 and 295 K, but no evidence for magnetic phase transitions is found in chi(T). Our data suggest the onset of a dramatic change in the Co 3d-electron spin dynamics at 295 K. This process is completed at 230 K. Our results maybe interpreted as evidence for either a tendency to electron localization or an unconventional charge-density wave phenomenon within the cobalt oxide layer, CoO_2, 3d electron system near room temperature.

Inhomogeneous magnetism in decagonal Al$_{69.8}$Pd$_{12.1}$Mn$_{18.1}$

We report the results of measurements of $^{27}$Al and $^{55}$Mn NMR spectra, the related spin-lattice relaxation rates, and the dc magnetic susceptibility of the stable decagonal quasicrystal Al$_{69.8}$Pd$_{12.1}$Mn$_{18.2}$. The temperature-variation of the magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ reveals that the Mn ions carry only an average magnetic moment of approximately $2μ_{\mathrm{B}}$, and confirms a spin-glass type freezing of the Mn-moments at $T_f=12$K. The NMR spectra reveal two partially resolved lines for the $^{27}$Al-nuclei, indicating that there are two different sets of environments for the Al-sites. The integrated intensity of the Mn line in the spectra suggests that about half of the Mn ions carry no magnetic moment. Below 50K, and upon decreasing the temperature, the $^{27}$Al NMR-linewidth $w$ and the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ both grow with an increasingly negative slope, as it is often observed and interpreted as a critical "slowing down" of magnetic moments in systems approaching a spin-glass transition. Various features, such as a broad maximum in $T_1^{-1}(T)$ and a slope change in the $w(χ)$ plot, both around 120K, suggest a gradual reduction of the number of Mn moments with decreasing temperature below 120K.

A low-dimensional spin S = 1/2 system at the quantum critical limit: Na2V2O7

We report the results of measurements of the dc-susceptibility and the 23Na-NMR response of Na2V2O7, a recently synthesized, non metallic low dimensional spin system. Our results indicate that upon reducing the temperature to below 100 K, the V^{4+} moments are gradually quenched, leaving only one moment out of 9 active. The NMR data reveal a phase transition at very low temperatures. With decreasing applied field H, the critical temperature shifts towards T = 0 K, suggesting that Na2V2O7 may be regarded as an insulator reaching a quantum critical point at H = 0.

High Magnetic Field NMR Studies of LiVGe$_2$O$_6$, a quasi 1-D Spin $S = 1$ System

We report $^{7}$Li pulsed NMR measurements in polycrystalline and single crystal samples of the quasi one-dimensional S=1 antiferromagnet LiVGe$_2$O$_6$, whose AF transition temperature is $T_{\text{N}}\simeq 24.5$ K. The field ($B_0$) and temperature ($T$) ranges covered were 9-44.5 T and 1.7-300 K respectively. The measurements included NMR spectra, the spin-lattice relaxation rate ($T_1^{-1}$), and the spin-phase relaxation rate ($T_2^{-1}$), often as a function of the orientation of the field relative to the crystal axes. The spectra indicate an AF magnetic structure consistent with that obtained from neutron diffraction measurements, but with the moments aligned parallel to the c-axis. The spectra also provide the $T$-dependence of the AF order parameter and show that the transition is either second order or weakly first order. Both the spectra and the $T_1^{-1}$ data show that $B_0$ has at most a small effect on the alignment of the AF moment. There is no spin-flop transition up to 44.5 T. These features indicate a very large magnetic anisotropy energy in LiVGe$_2$O$_6$ with orbital degrees of freedom playing an important role. Below 8 K, $T_1^{-1}$ varies substantially with the orientation of $B_0$ in the plane perpendicular to the c-axis, suggesting a small energy gap for magnetic fluctuations that is very anisotropic.
