Pion-Nucleon Scattering in Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory combined with the ${ 1/N_c}$ Expansion

This work implements the combined BChPT and 1/Nc expansions for pion-nucleon elastic scattering. The effective theory is based on the baryon sector dynamical spin-flavor SU(4) symmetry emergent in the large Nc limit, whose breaking is controlled by the $1/N_c$ expansion. The non-commutativity of the chiral and 1/Nc expansions in unitarity corrections (loops) requires a linking of both expansions. As it was shown in the case of baryon masses and currents, the natural linking is the $ξ$-expansion, in which $O(p) = O(1/Nc ) = O(ξ)A$. The spin-flavor symmetry requires that the ground state baryons span an SU(4) symmetric irreducible representation which implies that in particular $N$ and $Δ$ are active degrees of freedom in the effective theory. The scattering amplitude is expanded to the next-to-next-to leading order in the $ξ$ expansion, corresponding to the one-loop contributions with the LO Lagrangian. The results are given for generic $N_c$ in order to demonstrate the consistency of the framework. The spin-flavor symmetry plays a central role in maintaining the consistency of the effective theory with respect to the $1/N_c$ expansion. This consistency manifests itself in an improvement in the convergence of the low energy expansion with respect to the case of the ordinary BChPT without an explicit dynamical $Δ$, which is known to be inconsistent with the constraints of $N_c$ scaling. Fits to the $πN \to πN$ S, P and D partial wave amplitudes from the SAID data base are finally used to test the framework and to determine the energy range of its applicability.

Target normal single-spin asymmetry in inclusive electron-nucleon scattering with two-photon exchange: Analysis using $1/N_c$ expansion

We calculate the target normal single-spin asymmetry caused by two-photon exchange in inclusive electron-nucleon scattering in the resonance region. Our analysis uses the $1/N_c$ expansion of low-energy QCD and combines $N$ and $Δ$ intermediate and final states using the contracted $SU(4)$ spin-flavor symmetry. The normal spin asymmetry obtained in leading-order accuracy in $1/N_c$ has magnitude $\sim 10^{-2}$ and different sign in $ep$ and $en$ scattering. It can be measured in electron scattering at lab energies $\sim$ 0.5-1.5 GeV and provides a clean probe of two-photon exchange dynamics.

Baryon masses and σ-terms in SU(3) BChPT x 1/Nc

Baryon masses and nucleon σ-terms are studied with the effective theory that combines the chiral and 1/Nc expansions for three flavors. In particular the connection between the deviation of the Gell-Mann-Okubo relation and the σ-term corresponding to the scalar density associated with the hypercharge is emphasized. The latter is at lowest order related to a mass combination whose low value has given rise to a σ- term puzzle. It is shown that while the nucleon σ-terms have a well behaved low energy expansion, that mass combination is affected by large higher order corrections non-analytic in quark masses. Adding to the analysis lattice QCD baryon masses, it is found that σπN=69(10) MeV and σs has natural magnitude within its relative large uncertainty.

Workshop on High-Intensity Photon Sources (HIPS2017) Mini-Proceedings

This workshop aimed at producing an optimized photon source concept with potential increase of scientific output at Jefferson Lab, and at refining the science for hadron physics experiments benefitting from such a high-intensity photon source. The workshop brought together the communities directly using such sources for photo-production experiments, or for conversion into $K_L$ beams. The combination of high precision calorimetry and high intensity photon sources greatly enhances scientific benefit to (deep) exclusive processes like wide-angle and time-like Compton scattering. Potential prospects of such a high-intensity source with modern polarized targets were also discussed. The availability of $K_L$ beams would open new avenues for hadron spectroscopy, for example for the investigation of "missing" hyperon resonances, with potential impact on QCD thermodynamics and on freeze-out both in heavy ion collisions and in the early universe.

Workshop on Excited Hyperons in QCD Thermodynamics at Freeze-Out (YSTAR2016) Mini-Proceedings

This Workshop brought top experts, researchers, postdocs, and students from high-energy heavy ion interactions, lattice QCD and hadronic physics communities together. YSTAR2016 discussed the impact of "missing" hyperon resonances on QCD thermodynamics, on freeze-out in heavy ion collisions, on the evolution of early universe, and on the spectroscopy of strange particles. Recent studies that compared lattice QCD predictions of thermodynamic properties of quark-gluon plasma at freeze-out with calculations based on statistical hadron resonance gas models as well as experimentally measured ratios between yields of different hadron species in heavy ion collisions provide indirect evidence for the presence of "missing" resonances in all of these contexts. The aim of the YSTAR2016 Workshop was to sharpen these comparisons and advance our understanding of the formation of strange hadrons from quarks and gluons microseconds after the Big Bang and in todays experiments at LHC and RHIC as well as at future facilities like FAIR, J-PARC and KL at JLab. It was concluded that the new initiative to create a secondary beam of neutral kaons at JLab will make a bridge between the hardron spectroscopy, heavy-ion experiments and lattice QCD studies addressing some major issues related to thermodynamics of the early universe and cosmology in general.

Workshop on Physics with Neutral Kaon Beam at JLab (KL2016) Mini-Proceedings

The KL2016 Workshop is following the Letter of Intent LoI12-15-001 "Physics Opportunities with Secondary KL beam at JLab" submitted to PAC43 with the main focus on the physics of excited hyperons produced by the Kaon beam on unpolarized and polarized targets with GlueX setup in Hall D. Such studies will broaden a physics program of hadron spectroscopy extending it to the strange sector. The Workshop was organized to get a feedback from the community to strengthen physics motivation of the LoI and prepare a full proposal. Further details about the Workshop can be found on the web page of the conference: http://www.jlab.org/conferences/kl2016/index.html .

Heavy baryons in the large Nc limit

It is shown that in the large Nc limit heavy baryon masses can be estimated quantitatively in a 1/Nc expansion using the Hartree approximation. The results are compared with available lattice calculations for different values of the ratio between the square root of the string tension and the heavy quark mass tension independent of Nc. Using a potential adjusted to agree with the one obtained in lattice QCD, a variational analysis of the ground state spin averaged baryon mass is performed using Gaussian Hartree wave functions. Relativistic corrections through the quark kinetic energy are included. The results provide good estimates for the first sub-leading in 1/Nc corrections.

QCD and strongly coupled gauge theories: challenges and perspectives

We highlight the progress, current status, and open challenges of QCD-driven physics, in theory and in experiment. We discuss how the strong interaction is intimately connected to a broad sweep of physical problems, in settings ranging from astrophysics and cosmology to strongly-coupled, complex systems in particle and condensed-matter physics, as well as to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We also discuss how success in describing the strong interaction impacts other fields, and, in turn, how such subjects can impact studies of the strong interaction. In the course of the work we offer a perspective on the many research streams which flow into and out of QCD, as well as a vision for future developments.

The Nc dependencies of baryon masses: Analysis with Lattice QCD and Effective Theory

Baryon masses at varying values of Nc and light quark masses are studied with Lattice QCD and the results are analyzed in a low energy effective theory based on a combined framework of the 1/Nc and Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory expansions. Lattice QCD results for Nc = 3, 5 and 7 obtained in quenched calculations, as well as results for unquenched calculations for Nc = 3, are used for the analysis. The results are consistent with a previous analysis of Nc = 3 Lattice QCD results, and in addition permit the determination of sub-leading in 1/Nc effects in the spin-flavor singlet component of the baryon masses as well as in the hyperfine splittings.

Global analysis of the negative parity non-strange baryons in the 1/Nc expansion

A global study of the negative parity non-strange baryon observables is performed in the frame- work of the 1/Nc expansion. Masses, partial decay widths and photo-couplings are simultaneously analyzed. A main objective is to determine the composition of the spin 1/2 and 3/2 nucleon states, which come in pairs and involve two mixing angles which can be determined and tested for consistency by the mentioned observables. The issue of the assignment of those nucleon states to the broken SU(4) x O(3) mixed-symmetry multiplet is studied in detail, with the conclusion that the assignment made in the old studies based on the non-relativistic quark model is the preferred one. In addition, the analysis involves an update of the input data with respect to previous works.

QCD condensates and holographic Wilson loops for asymptotically AdS spaces

The minimization of the Nambu-Goto action for a surface whose contour defines a circular Wilson loop of radius a placed at a finite value of the coordinate orthogonal to the boundary is considered. This is done for asymptotically AdS spaces. The condensates of even dimension $n=2$ through $10$ are calculated in terms of the coefficient of $a^{n}$ in the expansion of the on-shell subtracted Nambu-Goto action for small $a$ The subtraction employed is such that it presents no conflict with conformal invariance in the AdS case and need not introduce an additional infrared scale for the case of confining geometries. It is shown that the UV value of the condensates is universal in the sense that they only depends on the first coefficients of the difference with the AdS case.

Nucleon and Delta axial-vector couplings in 1/Nc - Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory

In this contribution, baryon axial-vector couplings are studied in the framework of the combined 1/Nc and chiral expansions. This framework is implemented on the basis of the emergent spin-flavor symmetry in baryons at large Nc and HBChPT, and linking both expansions (ξ-expansion), where 1/Nc is taken to be a quantity O(p). The study is carried out including one-loop contributions, which corresponds to O(ξ^3) for baryon masses and O(ξ^2) for the axial couplings. An analysis of the Lattice QCD results for the axial couplings of both N and Δis presented.

Baryon Masses and Axial Couplings in the Combined 1/Nc and Chiral Expansions

The effective theory for baryons with combined 1/Nc and chiral expansions is analyzed for non-strange baryons. Results for baryon masses and axial couplings are obtained in the small scale expansion, to be coined as the ξ-expansion, in which the 1/Nc and the low energy power countings are linked according to 1/Nc=O(ξ)=O(p). Masses and axial couplings are analyzed to O(ξ^3) and O(ξ^2) respectively, which correspond to next-to-next to leading order evaluations, and require one-loop contributions in the effective theory. The role of the spin-flavor approximate symmetry in baryons, consequence of the large Nc limit, is manifested in the physical world with Nc=3 in a significant way, as the analysis of its breaking in the masses and the axial couplings shows. Applications to the recent lattice QCD results on baryon masses and the nucleon's axial coupling are presented. It is shown that those results are naturally described within the effective theory at the order considered in the ξ-expansion.

Baryon masses and axial charges in 1/Nc - ChPT

An analysis is presented of the ground state baryon's (N and Δ) masses and axial couplings in the combined 1/Nc and chiral expansions. Renormalization and alternative power counting schemes are discussed to one loop (NNLO). An application is made to lattice QCD results for non-strange baryon masses and the nucleon axial coupling as functions of the pion mass. This work represents a brief summary of a more extensive analysis to be presented elsewhere.

Partial Decay Widths of Negative Parity Baryons in the 1/Nc Expansion

The partial decay widths of lowest lying negative parity baryons belonging to the 70-plet of SU(6) are analyzed in the framework of the 1/Nc expansion The channels considered are those with single pseudo-scalar meson emission. The analysis is carried out to sub-leading order in 1/Nc and to first order in SU(3) symmetry breaking. Conclusions about the magnitude of SU(3) breaking effects along with predictions for some unknown or poorly determined partial decay widths of known resonances are obtained.

Analysis of 56-plet positive parity baryon decays in the 1/Nc expansion

The partial decay widths of positive parity baryons belonging to 56-plets of SU(6) are analyzed in the framework of the 1/Nc expansion. The channels considered are those with emission of a single pion, K or K-bar mesons, and the analysis is carried out to subleading order in 1/Nc and to first order in SU(3) symmetry breaking. The results for the multiplet [56,0+], to which the Roper resonance belongs, indicate a poor description at leading order, requiring important next to leading order corrections. For the multiplet [56,2+], the P-wave decays in the non-strange sector are well described at leading order, while the F-wave decays require the next to leading order corrections, which turn out to be of natural magnitude. SU(3) breaking effects are poorly determined, because only few decays with K meson in final state are established, and their widths are not known with sufficient accuracy.

Electromagnetic two-body currents of one- and two-pion range

Nuclear electromagnetic currents are derived in time-ordered perturbation theory within an effective-field-theory framework including explicit nucleons, $Δ$ isobars, and pions up to one loop, or N$^3$LO. The currents obtained at N$^2$LO, {\it i.e.} ignoring loop corrections, are used in a study of neutron radiative captures on protons and deuterons at thermal energies, and of $A$=2 and 3 nuclei magnetic moments. The wave functions for $A$=2 are derived from solutions of the Schrödinger equation with the Argonne $v_{18}$ (AV18) or CD-Bonn (CDB) potentials, while those for $A$=3 are obtained with the hyperspherical-harmonics-expansion method from a realistic Hamiltonian including, in addition to the AV18 or CDB two-nucleon, also a three-nucleon potential. With the strengths of the $Δ$-excitation currents occurring at N$^2$LO determined to reproduce the $n$-$p$ cross section and isovector combination of the trinucleon magnetic moments, we find that the cross section and photon circular polarization parameter, measured in $n$-$d$ and $\vec{n}$-$d$ processes, are underpredicted by theory, for example the cross section by (11--38)% as the cutoff is increased from 500 to 800 MeV. A complete analysis of the results, in particular their large cutoff dependence, is presented.

Electromagnetic Processes in $χ$EFT

Nuclear electromagnetic currents derived in a chiral-effective-field-theory framework including explicit nucleons, $Δ$ isobars, and pions up to N$^2$LO, {\it i.e.} ignoring loop corrections, are used in a study of neutron radiative captures on protons and deuterons at thermal energies, and of $A$=2 and 3 nuclei magnetic moments. With the strengths of the $Δ$-excitation currents determined to reproduce the $n$-$p$ cross section and isovector combination of the trinucleon magnetic moments, we find that the cross section and photon circular polarization parameter, measured respectively in $n$-$d$ and $\vec{n}$-$d$ processes, are significantly underpredicted by theory.
