Virtual Effects of Physics Beyond the Standard Model

We examine the indirect effects of new physics on a variety of processes in the $B$ system, such as the $Z\to b\bar b$ vertex, the decays $B\to X_s γ$ and $B\to X_s\ell^+\ell^-$, and CP violation. {Presented at the 4th International Conference on Physics Beyond the Standard Model, Lake Tahoe, CA, December 13-18, 1994}

The Charm Physics Potential of a Tau-Charm Factory

The charm physics program accessible to a Tau-Charm Factory is summarized. Semileptonic, leptonic, hadronic, rare and forbidden charm decay modes are discussed, as well as \dmix\ mixing and CP violation in the charm sector. The theoretical expectations in the Standard Model and beyond as well as the experimental capabilities of a Tau-Charm Factory are examined for each of the above processes. {To appear in {\it The Tau-Charm Factory in the Era of B-Factories and CESR}, Stanford, CA, August 15-16, 1994}

Probing New Physics in Rare Charm Processes

The possibility of using the charm system to search for new physics is addressed. Phenomena such as $D^0-\bar D^0$ mixing and rare decays of charmed mesons are first examined in the Standard Model to test our present understanding and to serve as benchmarks for signals from new sources. The effects of new physics from various classes of non-standard dynamical models on $D^0-\bar D^0$ mixing are investigated.

Top Ten Models Constrained by b to s gamma

The radiative decay b to s gamma is examined in the Standard Model and in nine classes of models which contain physics beyond the Standard Model. The constraints which may be placed on these models from the recent results of the CLEO Collaboration on both inclusive and exclusive radiative $B$ decays is summarized. Reasonable bounds are found for the parameters in some cases.

Using `Invisible' Decay Modes as Probes of Z' Couplings

We explore the possibility that $Z'$ couplings can be probed using decay modes which involve neutrinos once Standard Model backgrounds are directly determined by the data itself. For some models, sufficient statistics are available at either the SSC or LHC to render these modes useful for coupling determinations, provided the mass of the $Z'$ is not much larger than 1 TeV, if we assume other new physics background sources are absent.

Extended Gauge Sectors at Linear Colliders

Signatures of extended gauge models at high energy \epem\ linear colliders are summarized. Talk presented at the Workshop on Physics and Experiments with Linear \epem\ Colliders, Waikoloa, Hawaii, April 1993.

Using $b \to sγ$ to Probe Top Quark Couplings

Possible anomalous couplings of the top-quark to on-shell photons and gluons are constrained by the recent results of the CLEO Collaboration on both inclusive and exclusive radiative $B$ decays. We find that the process \bsg\ can lead to reasonable bounds on both the anomalous electric and magnetic dipole moments of the top-quark, while essentially no limits are obtained on the corresponding chromoelectric and chromomagnetic moments, which enter the expression for the decay rate only through operator mixing.

Signals for Virtual Leptoquark Exchange at Colliders

We study the effects of virtual leptoquark exchange on charged current and neutral current processes at HERA, on di-lepton production at the Tevatron, and on quark pair production at LEP II. We present the areas of parameter space that can be excluded at these colliders by searching for deviations from Standard Model expectations.

Can $b\to sγ$ Close the Supersymmetric Higgs Production Window?

We show that the present limit from CLEO on the inclusive decay $b\to sγ$ provides strong constraints on the parameters of the charged Higgs sector in two-Higgs-Doublet-Models. Only a slight improvement in the experimental bound will exclude the region in the Supersymmetric Higgs parameter space which is inaccessible to collider searches.

A Separate Higgs?

We investigate the possibility of a multi-Higgs doublet model where the lightest neutral Higgs boson ($h^0$) decouples from the fermion sector. We are partially motivated by the four $\ell^+\ell^-γγ$ events with $M_{γγ}\simeq60$\,GeV recently observed by the L3 collaboration, which could be a signal for $Z\to (Z^*\to \ell^+\ell^-)+(h^0\to γγ)$. Collider signatures for the additional physical Higgs bosons present in such models are discussed.

The Effects of Detector Descoping and Neutral Boson Mixing on New Gauge Boson Physics at the SSC

We examine how the abilities of an SDC-like detector to discover and identify the origin of a new neutral gauge boson are affected by $Z_1-Z_2 $ mixing and by variations in detector parameters such as lepton pair mass resolution, particle identification efficiency, and rapidity coverage. Also examined is the sensitivity of these results to variations in structure function uncertainties and uncertainties in the machine integrated luminosity. Such considerations are of importance when dealing with the issues of detector descoping and design.

Probing New Gauge Boson Couplings via Three-Body Decays

We examine the possibility of using rare, 3-body decays of a new neutral gauge boson, \ztwo, to probe its gauge couplings at hadron colliders. Specifically, we study the decays $\ztwo\to W\ellν$ and $\ztwo\to Zν\barν$ and find that much knowledge of the \ztwo\ properties can be obtained from these processes. In particular, these decay modes can yield valuable information on the amount of $Z_1-Z_2$ mixing, on the generation dependence of the \ztwo\ couplings, on the properties of the new generator associated with the \ztwo, as well as being used to distinguish between possible extended models. The analogous 3-body decays into a new, heavy charged gauge boson, $\ztwo\to W_2^\pm\ell^\mpν$, are also investigated in models where this can occur.

Signals for Virtual Leptoquark Exchange at HERA

We study the effects of virtual leptoquarks on charged current and neutral current processes at the $ep$ collider HERA. We present the areas of parameter space that can be excluded at HERA by searching for deviations from Standard Model expectations. The best results are obtained by examining the ratio of neutral current to charged current cross sections, $R=σ_{NC}/σ_{CC}$, where, with $200\inpb$ of integrated luminosity for unpolarized $e^-$ and $e^+$ beams, HERA can search for leptoquarks with masses up to $\sim 800\gev$, with leptoquark coupling strengths of order $α_{em}$.
