Nonequilibrium carrier and phonon dynamics in the ferrimagnetic semiconductor Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$

We investigate the ultrafast carrier and phonon dynamics in the ferrimagnetic semiconductor Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ using time-resolved optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Our results reveal that the electron-phonon thermalization process with a subpicosecond timescale is prolonged by the hot-phonon bottleneck effect. We identify the subsequent relaxation processes associated with two non-radiative recombination mechanisms, i.e., phonon-assisted electron-hole recombination and defect-related Shockley-Read-Hall recombination. Temperature-dependent measurements indicate that all three relaxation components show large variation around 175 and 78 K, which is related to the initiation of spin fluctuation and ferrimagnetic order in Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$. In addition, two pronounced coherent optical phonons are observed, in which the phonon with a frequency of 3.7 THz is attributed to the $A_{1g}$ mode of Te precipitates. Applying the strain pulse propagation model to the coherent acoustic phonons yields a penetration depth of 506 nm and a sound speed of 2.42 km/s in Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$. Our results develop understanding of the nonequilibrium properties of the ferrimagnetic semiconductor Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$, and also shed light on its potential applications in optoelectronic and spintronic devices.

Revealing strong coupling of collective modes between superconductivity and pseudogap in cuprate superconductor by terahertz third harmonic generation

The study of interaction between different degrees of freedom in solids is of fundamental importance to understand the functionalities of materials. One striking example of such interaction is the intertwined coupling or competition between superconductivity (SC), charge density wave (CDW), pseudogap state (PG), and other exotic phases in cuprate superconductors. Recent emergence of nonlinear Terahertz (THz) third harmonic generation (THG) spectroscopy provides a powerful tool for exploring the collective (Higgs) modes of superconductivity order parameters, and its interaction with intertwined/competing phases. In this study, we report on nonlinear THz THG spectroscopy of the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ (YBCO) thin films with different doping. We identify a characteristic temperature $T_{THG}$, below which third order suscepetility $χ^{(3)}$ emerges. Notably, the $T_{THG}$ is coincident with the crossover temperature $T^*$ of pseudogap in a wide range doping of phase diagram. Upon entering the superconducting state, THG increases sharply but exhibits an abnormal dip feature near $T_c$ which is more clearly seen in optimally doped sample. Strikingly, we observe a beating structure directly in the measured real time waveform of THG signal. Fourier transformation of the time domain waveform gives two separate modes below and above original THG frequency. The observation strongly indicates that an additional mode, presumably Higgs mode, appears at $T_c$ and couples to the mode already developed below $T^*$. The strong coupling effect offers new insight into the interplay between superconductivity and pseudogap. The result unambiguously suggests that the pseudogap phase is not a precursor of superconductivity but represents a distinct order.

Superconductivity in Scandium Borocarbide with orbital hybridization

Exploration of superconductivity in light element compounds has drawn considerable attention because those materials can easily realize the high $T_{c}$ superconductivity, such as ${\mathrm{LnNi}}_{2}{\mathrm{B}_{2}}{\mathrm{C}}$ ($T_{c}$ =17 K), ${\mathrm{Mg}}{\mathrm{B}}_{2}$ ($T_{c}$ =39 K), and very recently super-hydrides under pressure ($T_{c}$ =250 K). Here we report the discovery of bulk superconductivity at 7.8 K in scandium borocarbide ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{20}{\mathrm{B}}{\mathrm{C}}_{27}$ with a tetragonal lattice which structure changes based on the compound of ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{3}{\mathrm{C}}_{4}$ with very little B doping. Magnetization and specific heat measurements show bulk superconductivity. An upper critical field of Hc2(0) ~ 8 T is determined. Low temperature specific-heat shows that this system is a BCS fully gapped s-wave superconductor. Electronic structure calculations demonstrate that compared with ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{3}{\mathrm{C}}_{4}$ there are more orbital overlap and hybridization between Sc 3d electrons and 2p electrons of C-C(B)-C fragment in ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{20}{\mathrm{B}}{\mathrm{C}}_{27}$, which form a new electric conduction path of Sc-C(B)-Sc. Those changes influence the band structure at the Fermi level and may be the reason of superconductivity in ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{20}{\mathrm{B}}{\mathrm{C}}_{27}$.

First order transition in trigonal structure ${\textbf{Ca}}{\textbf{Mn}}_{2}{\textbf{P}}_{2}$

We report structural and physical properties of the single crystalline ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$. The X-ray diffraction(XRD) results show that ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$ adopts the trigonal ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Al}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$-type structure. Temperature dependent electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$ measurements indicate an insulating ground state for ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$ with activation energies of 40 meV and 0.64 meV for two distinct regions, respectively. Magnetization measurements show no apparent magnetic phase transition under 400 K. Different from other ${\mathrm{A}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{Pn}}_{2}$ (A = Ca, Sr, and Ba, and Pn = P, As, and Sb) compounds with the same structure, heat capacity $C_{\mathrm{p}}(T)$ and $ρ(T)$ reveal that ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$ has a first-order transition at $T$ = 69.5 K and the transition temperature shifts to high temperature upon increasing pressure. The emergence of plenty of new Raman modes below the transition, clearly suggests a change in symmetry accompanying the transition. The combination of the structural, transport, thermal and magnetic measurements, points to an unusual origin of the transition.

Single crystal growth and magnetoresistivity study of topological semimetal CoSi

We report single crystal growth of CoSi, which has recently been recognized as a new type of topological semimetal hosting fourfold and sixfold degenerate nodes. The Shubnikov-de Haas quantum oscillation (QO) is observed on our crystals. There are two frequencies originating from almost isotropic bulk electron Fermi surfaces, in accordance with band structure calculations. The effective mass, scattering rate, and QO phase difference of the two frequencies are extracted and discussed.

Evolution of Magnetic Double Helix and Quantum Criticality near a Dome of Superconductivity in CrAs

At ambient pressure CrAs undergoes a first-order transition into a double-helical magnetic state at TN = 265 K, which is accompanied by a structural transition. The recent discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in CrAs makes it important to clarify the nature of quantum phase transitions out of its coupled structural/helimagnetic order. Here we show, via neutron diffraction on the single-crystal CrAs under hydrostatic pressure (P), that the combined order is suppressed at Pc ~ 10 kbar, near which bulk superconductivity develops with a maximal transition temperature Tc ~ 2 K. We further show that the coupled order is also completely suppressed by phosphorus doping in CrAs1-xPx at a critical xc ~ 0.05, above which inelastic neutron scattering evidenced persistent antiferromagnetic correlations, providing a possible link between magnetism and superconductivity. In line with the presence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations near Pc (xc), the A coefficient of the quadratic temperature dependence of resistivity exhibits a dramatic enhancement as P (x) approaches Pc (xc), around which Res(T) has a non-Fermi-liquid form. Accordingly, the electronic specific-heat coefficient of CrAs1-xPx peaks out around xc. These properties provide clear evidences for quantum criticality, which we interpret as originating from a nearly second-order helimagnetic quantum phase transition that is concomitant with a first-order structural transition. Our findings in CrAs highlight the distinct characteristics of quantum criticality in bad metals, thereby bringing out new insights into the physics of unconventional superconductivity such as occurring in the high-Tc iron pnictides.

Evidence for triplet superconductivity near an antiferromagnetic instability in CrAs

Superconductivity was recently observed in CrAs as the helimagnetic order is suppressed by applying pressure, suggesting possible unconventional superconductivity. To reveal the nature of the superconducting order parameter of CrAs, here we report the angular dependence of the upper critical field under pressure. Upon rotating the field by 360 degrees in the $bc$-plane, six maxima are observed in the upper critical field, where the oscillations have both six-fold and two-fold symmetric components. Our analysis suggests the presence of an unconventional odd-parity spin triplet state.

Orbital-dependent charge dynamics in MnP revealed by optical study

Unconventional superconductivity often emerges at the border of long-range magnetic orders. Understanding the low-energy charge dynamics may provide crucial information on the formation of superconductivity. Here we report the unpolarized/polarized optical conductivity study of high quality MnP single crystals at ambient pressure. Our data reveal two types of charge carriers with very different lifetimes. In combination with the first-principles calculations, we show that the short-lifetime carriers have flat Fermi sheets which become gapped in the helimagnetic phase, causing a dramatic change in the low-frequency optical spectra, while the long-lifetime carriers are anisotropic three-dimensional like which are little affected by the magnetic transitions and provide major contributions to the transport properties. This orbital-dependent charge dynamics originates from the special crystal structure of MnP and may have an influence on the unconventional superconductivity and its interplay with helimagnetism at high pressures.

Single crystal growth and physical property characterizations of mixed valent compound YbFe$_2$Al$_{10}$

We report single crystal growth and physical properties characterization of YbFe$_2$Al$_{10}$ compounds. The measurements of resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat show different behaviors from previous studies on polycrystal samples. A mixed valent characteristic with moderate mass enhancement is indicated. In particular, the optical spectroscopy measurement reveals formation of multiple hybridization energy gaps which become progressively pronounced at low temperature. The multiple hybridization energy gaps are likely caused by the hybridizations between the flat band from Yb 4$f$ electrons and different bands of conduction electrons.

Magnetic Pitch as a Tuning Fork for Superconductivity

Magnetism and superconductivity often compete for preeminence as a material's ground state, and in the right circumstances the fluctuating remains of magnetic order can induce superconducting pairing. The intertwining of the two on the microscopic level, independent of lattice excitations, is especially pronounced in heavy fermion compounds, rare earth cuprates, and iron pnictides. Here we point out that for a helical arrangement of localized spins, a variable magnetic pitch length provides a unique tuning process from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic ground state in the long and short wavelength limits, respectively. Such chemical or pressure adjustable helical order naturally provides the possibility for continuous tuning between ferromagnetically and antiferromagnetically mediated superconductivity. At the same time, phonon mediated superconductivity is suppressed because of the local ferromagnetic spin configuration. We employ synchrotron-based magnetic x-ray diffraction techniques to test these ideas in the recently discovered superconductor, MnP. This sensitive probe directly reveals a reduced-moment, helical spin order at high pressure proximate to the superconducting state, with a tightened pitch in comparison to that at ambient pressure where superconductivity is absent. The correlation between magnetic pitch length and superconducting transition temperature in the (Cr/Mn/Fe)(P/As) family suggests a strategy for using spiral magnets as interlocutors for spin fluctuation mediated superconductivity.

Penetration depth measurements of K2Cr3As3 and Rb2Cr3As3

The newly discovered superconductors A2Cr3As3 (A = K, Rb, Cs), with a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure have attracted considerable interest. The crystal structure consists of double-walled tubes of [Cr3As3]^(2-) that extend along the c-axis. Previously we reported measurements of the change in London penetration depth of polycrystalline samples of K2Cr3As3 using a tunnel diode oscillator based technique, which show a linear temperature dependence at low temperatures, giving evidence for line nodes in the superconducting gap. Here we report similar measurements of the penetration depth for polycrystalline Rb2Cr3As3 and several single crystals of K2Cr3As3, prepared by two different research groups. The single crystal measurements show similar behavior to polycrystalline samples down to 0.9-1.2 K, where a downturn is observed in the frequency shift for all single crystal samples. These results give further evidence for nodal superconductivity in K2Cr3As3, which indicates that the superconducting pairing state is unconventional. The different low temperature behavior observed in samples which have deteriorated after being exposed to air, emphasises that it is necessary to properly handle the samples prior to being measured because the A2Cr3As3 compounds are extremely air sensitive and evidence for nodal superconductivity from penetration depth measurements is only observed in the samples which display a sharp superconducting transition. Therefore further work is required to improve the quality of single crystals and to identify the origin of the downturn.

Observation of Raman active phonon with Fano lineshape in quasi-one-dimensional superconductor K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$

We performed a polarized Raman scattering study of quasi-one-dimensional superconductor K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. We detect two A$_1^\prime$ phonons and three E$^\prime$ phonons. One of the A$_1^\prime$ modes exhibits a nearly temperature-independent Fano lineshape. Based on our first-principles calculations, we ascribe this mode to the in-phase vibrations of Cr atoms within one layer. This observation strongly suggests that the magnetic fluctuations in K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ are coupled to the electronic structure \emph{via} the lattice.

Pressure induced superconductivity on the border of magnetic order in MnP

We report the discovery of superconductivity on the border of long-range magnetic order in the itinerant-electron helimagnet MnP via the application of high pressure. Superconductivity with Tsc~1 K emerges and exists merely near the critical pressure Pc~8 GPa, where the long-range magnetic order just vanishes. The present finding makes MnP the first Mn-based superconductor. The close proximity of superconductivity to a magnetic instability suggests an unconventional pairing mechanism. Moreover, the detailed analysis of the normal-state transport properties evidenced non-Fermi-liquid behavior and the dramatic enhancement of the quasi-particle effective mass near Pc associated with the magnetic quantum fluctuations.

Kondo effect in a novel 5d quasi-skutterudite Yb3Os4Ge13

We report the crystal growth of a new compound, Yb3Os4Ge13, by using a Bi-flux method. X-ray diffraction measurement shows that it crystallizes in the quasi-skutterudite-type caged structure with a cubic space group of Pm-3n (No. 223). Magnetic measurements reveal almost fully localized Yb f-moments above 120 K. The resistivity exhibits a crossover from metallic to insulating behavior with a logarithmic increase below ~ 40 K. The specific heat coefficient shows a rapid upturn below ~5 K and exceeds 2 J mol-1 K-2 at 2 K. Our experimental analysis and electronic band structure calculations demonstrate that Yb3Os4Ge13 exhibits the Kondo effect due to strong hybridization of the localized Yb f-moments with the p-electrons of the surrounding Ge-cages.

Superconductivity tuned by the iron vacancy order in K$_{\bf x}$Fe$_{\bf 2-y}$Se$_2$

Combining in-depth neutron diffraction and systematic bulk studies, we discover that the $\sqrt{5}\times\sqrt{5}$ Fe vacancy order with its associated block antiferromagnetic order is the ground state, with varying occupancy ratio of the iron 16i and vacancy 4d sites, across the phase-diagram of K$_{\bf x}$Fe$_{\bf 2-y}$Se$_2$. The orthorhombic order with one of the four Fe sites vacant appears only at intermediate temperature as a competing phase. The material experiences an insulator to metal crossover when the $\sqrt{5}\times\sqrt{5}$ order has highly developed. Superconductivity occurs in such a metallic phase.

Continuous magnetic phase transition in half-frustrated Ca2Os2O7

We present the specific heat, magnetization, optical spectroscopy measurements and the firstprinciple calculations on the Weberite structure Ca2Os2O7 single crystal/polycrystalline sample. The Ca2Os2O7 shows a Curie-Weiss nature at high temperature and goes into a ferrimagnetic insulating state at 327 K on cooling. A λ-like peak is observed at 327 K in the specific heat implying a second-order phase transition. The vanishing electronic specific heat at low temperature suggests a full energy gap. At high temperature above the transition, small amount of itinerant carriers with short life time τare observed, which is gapped at 20 K with a direct gap of 0:24 eV . Our first principle calculations indicate that the anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) correlation with intermediate Coulomb repulsion U could effectively split Os(4b) t2g bands and push them away from Fermi level(EF). On the other hand, a non-collinear magnetic interaction is needed to push the Os(4c) bands away from EF, which could be induced by Os(4c)-Os(4c) frustration. Therefore, AFM correlation, Coulomb repulsion U and non-collinear interaction all play important roles for the insulating ground state in Ca2Os2O7.

Deviating band symmetries and many-body interactions in a model hole doped iron pnictide superconductor

We present a polarization resolved study of the low energy band structure in the optimally doped iron pnictide superconductor Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ (T$_c$=37K) using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Polarization-contrasted measurements are used to identify and trace all three low energy hole-like bands predicted by local density approximation (LDA) calculations. The photoemitted electrons reveal an inconsistency with LDA-predicted symmetries along the $Γ$-X high symmetry momentum axis, due to unexpectedly strong rotational anisotropy in electron kinetics. We evaluate many-body effects such as Mott-Hubbard interactions that are likely to underlie the anomaly, and discuss how the observed deviations from LDA band structure affect the energetics of iron pnictide Cooper pairing in the hole doped regime.

Electronic properties of 3d transitional metal pnictides : A comparative study by optical spectroscopy

Single-crystalline KFe2As2 and CaT2As2 (T = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) are synthesized and investigated by resistivity, susceptibility and optical spectroscopy. It is found that CaCu2As2 exhibits a similar transition to the lattice abrupt collapse transitions discovered in CaFe2(As1-xPx)2 and Ca1-xRexFe2As2 (Re-rare earth element). The resistivity of KFe2As2 and CaT2As2 (T = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) approximately follows the similar T^2 dependence at low temperature, but the magnetic behaviors vary with different samples. Optical measurement reveals the optical response of CaCu2As2 is not sensitive to the transition at 50 K, with no indication of development of a new energy gap below the transition temperature. Using Drude-Lorentz model, We find that two Drude terms, a coherent one and an incoherent one, can fit the low-energy optical conductivity of KFe2As2 and CaT2As2 (T = Fe, Co, Ni) very well. However, in CaCu2As2, which is a sp-band metal, the low-energy optical conductivity can be well described by a coherent Drude term. Lack of the incoherent Drude term in CaCu2As2 may be attributed to the weaker electronic correlation than KFe2As2 and CaT2As2 (T = Fe, Co, Ni). Spectral weight analysis of these samples indicates that the unconventional spectral weight transfer, which is related to Hund's coupling energy J_H, is only observed in iron pnictides, supporting the viewpoint that J_H may be a key clue to seek the mechanism of magnetism and superconductivity in pnictides.
