Pressure induced effects on the Fermi surface of superconducting 2H-NbSe$_2$

The pressure dependence of the critical temperature $T_c$ and upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ has been measured up to 19 GPa in the layered superconducting material 2H-NbSe$_2$. Relating the behavior of $H_{c2}(T)$ to Fermi surface parameters, we find that the electron phonon coupling of the 2D Nb 4d derived bands shows a peak at 5 GPa when the charge density wave (CDW) order is suppressed. On the other hand, $T_c(P)$ shows a bell shaped curve with a maximum at 10.5 GPa, well above the pressure for the suppression of the CDW order. Changes in the band structure produce this shift in the maximum of $T_c(P)$, demonstrating that 2H-NbSe$_2$ shows important differences with respect to other compounds where $T_c$ has a maximum in the temperature-density phase diagram shaped by the suppression of another, non-superconducting, ground state.

Origin of Colossal Dielectric Response of Pr(0.6)Ca(0.4)MnO(3)

We report the detailed study of dielectric response of Pr(0.6)Ca(0.4)MnO(3) (PCMO), member of manganite family showing colossal magnetoresistance. Measurements have been performed on four polycrystalline samples and four single crystals, allowing us to compare and extract the essence of dielectric response in the material. High frequency dielectric function is found to be 30, as expected for the perovskite material. Dielectric relaxation is found in frequency window of 20Hz-1MHz at temperatures of 50-200K that yields to colossal low-frequency dielectric function, i.e. static dielectric constant. Static dielectric constant is always colossal, but varies considerably in different samples from 1000 until 100000. The measured data can be simulated very well by blocking (surface barrier) capacitance in series with sample resistance. This indicates that the large dielectric constant in PCMO arises from the Schottky barriers at electrical contacts. Measurements in magnetic field and with d.c. bias support this interpretation. Weak anomaly at the charge ordering temperature can also be attributed to interplay of sample and contact resistance. We comment our results in the framework of related studies by other groups.

Pressure dependence of the upper critical field of MgB2 and of YNi2B2C

We present measurements of H$_{c2}(T)$ under pressure in MgB$_2$ and in YNi$_2$B$_2$C. The changes in the shape of H$_{c2}(T)$ are interpreted within current models and show the evolution of the main Fermi surface velocities $v_F$ and electron-phonon coupling parameters $λ$ with pressure. In MgB$_2$ the electron-phonon coupling strength of the nearly two dimensional $σ$ band, responsible for the high critical temperature, is more affected by pressure than the $π$ band coupling, and the hole doping of the $σ$ band decreases. In YNi$_2$B$_2$C, the peculiar positive curvature of H$_{c2}(T)$ is weakened by pressure.

Ferromagnetic/superconducting proximity effect in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 / YBa2Cu3O7 superlattices

We study the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in high quality YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) / La0.7Ca0.3MnO3(LCMO)superlattices. We find evidence for the YBCO superconductivity depression in presence of the LCMO layers. We show that due to its short coherence length superconductivity survives in the YBCO down to much smaller thickness in presence of the magnetic layer than in low Tc superconductors. We also find that for a fixed thickness of the superconducting layer, superconductivity is depressed over a thickness interval of the magnetic layer in the 100 nm range. This is a much longer length scale than that predicted by the theory of ferromagnetic/superconducting proximity effect.

Superconductivity depression in ultrathin YBa2Cu3O7-x layers in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 /YBa2Cu3O7-x superlattices

We report on the depression of the superconducting critical temperature of ultra thin YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) layers, when their thickness is reduced in presence of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) magnetic layers in [LCMO (15 u.c.)/ YBCO(N u.c.)] superlattices. The thickness of the manganite layer is kept at 15 unit cells and the YBCO thickness is varied between N=12 and N=1 unit cells. The structural analysis using x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy shows sharp interfaces with little structural disorder. While a critical temperature, Tc=85 K is found for 12 YBCO unit cells, superconductivity is completely suppressed for YBCO layer thickness below 3 unit cells. The possible interaction between superconductivity and magnetism is investigated.

Disorder induced phase segregation in La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 manganites

Neutron powder diffraction experiments on La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 over a broad temperature range above and below the metal-insulator transition have been analyzed beyond the Rietveld average approach by use of Reverse Monte Carlo modelling. This approach allows the calculation of atomic pair distribution functions and spin correlation functions constrained to describe the observed Bragg and diffuse nuclear and magnetic scattering. The results evidence phase separation within a paramagnetic matrix into ferro and antiferromagnetic domains correlated to anistropic lattice distortions in the vicinity of the metal-insulator transition.

On the origin of neutron magnetic scattering in anti-site disordered Sr2FeMoO6 double perovskites

Anti-site disordering in Sr2FeMoO6 double perovskites (containing Mo atoms at Fe positions, and viceversa) has recently been shown to have a dramatic influence in their magnetic and magnetotransport properties. In the present study, two polycrystalline Sr2FeMoO6 samples showing different degrees of anti-site disorder (a nominally 'ordered' sample with 70% of cationic ordering and a nominally 'disordered' sample with 18% of cationic ordering) have been examined by magnetic measurements and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) techniques in the 15-500K temperature range. Our main finding is that the 'disordered' sample exhibits a strong magnetic scattering (noticeable even at 500K), comparable to that displayed by the 'ordered' one below TC= 415 K. For the 'disordered' sample, the magnetic scattering exhibited on low angle Bragg positions, is not to be ascribed to a (non-existent) ferrimagnetic ordering: our results suggest that it originates upon naturally-occurring groups of Fe cations in which strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) Fe-O-Fe superexchange interactions are promoted, similar to those existing in the LaFeO3 perovskite. These Fe groups are not magnetically isolated, but coupled by virtue of Fe-O-Mo AFM interactions, which maintain the long-range coherence of this AFM structure. Susceptibility measurements confirm the presence of AFM interactions below 770 K.

First order transition and phase separation in pyrochlores with colossal-magnetoresistance

Tl$_{2}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ pyrochlores present colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) around the long range ferromagnetic ordering temperature (T$_{C}$). The character of this magnetic phase transition has been determined to be first order, by purely magnetic methods, in contrast to the second order character previously reported by Zhao et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 219 (1999)). The highest CMR effect, as in Tl$_{1.8}$Cd$_{0.2}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$, corresponds to a stronger first order character. This character implies a second type of magnetic interaction, besides the direct superexchange between the Mn$^{4+}$ ions, as well as a phase coexistence. A model is proposed, with a complete Hamiltonian (including superexchange and an indirect interaction), which reproduce the observed phenomenology.
