A Novel Dielectric Anomaly in Cuprates and Nickelates: Signature of an Electronic Glassy State

The low-frequency dielectric response of hole-doped insulators La_{2}Cu_{1-x}Li_{x}O_{4} and La_{2-x}Sr_{x}NiO_{4} shows a large dielectric constant ε^{'} at high temperature and a step-like drop by a factor of 100 at a material-dependent low temperature T_{f}. T_{f} increases with frequency and the dielectric response shows universal scaling in a Cole-Cole plot, suggesting that a charge glass state is realized both in the cuprates and in the nickelates.

Non-Fermi Liquid behavior in CeIrIn$_5$ near a metamagnetic transition

We present specific heat and resistivity study of CeIrIn5 in magnetic fields up to 17 T and temperature down to 50 mK. Both quantities were measured with the magnetic field parallel to the c-axis (H || [001]) and within the a-b plane (H \perp [001]). Non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior develops above 12 T for H || [001]. The Fermi liquid state is much more robust for H \perp [001] and is suppressed only moderately at the highest applied field. Based on the observed trends and the proximity to a metamagnetic phase transition, which exists at fields above 25 T for H || [001], we suggest that the observed NFL behavior in CeIrIn5 is a consequence of a metamagnetic quantum critical point.

Crystalline Electric Field Effects in CeMIn5: Superconductivity and the Influence of Kondo Spin Fluctuations

We have measured the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations of the CeMIn5 (M = Co, Rh, Ir) series of heavy fermion superconductors by means of inelastic neutron scattering. Fits to a CEF model reproduce the inelastic neutron scattering spectra and the high temperature magnetic susceptibility. The CEF parameters, energy level splittings, and wavefunctions are tabulated for each member of the CeMIn5 series and compared to each other as well as to the results of previous measurements. Our results indicate that the CEF level splitting in all three materials is similar, and can be thought of as being derived from the cubic parent compound CeIn3 in which an excited state quartet at ~12 meV is split into two doublets by the lower symmetry of the tetragonal environment of the CeMIn5 materials. In each case, the CEF excitations are observed as broad lines in the inelastic neutron scattering spectrum. We attribute this broadening to Kondo hybridization of the localized f moments with the conduction electrons. The evolution of the superconducting transition temperatures in the different members of CeMIn5 can then be understood as a direct consequence of the strength of this hybridization. Due to the importance of Kondo spin fluctuations in these materials, we also present calculations within the non-crossing approximation (NCA) to the Anderson impurity model including the effect of CEF level splitting for the inelastic neutron scattering spectra and the magnetic susceptibility.

Ultrafast quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in normal metals and heavy fermion materials

We present a detailed theoretical study of the ultrafast quasiparticle relaxation dynamics observed in normal metals and heavy fermion materials with femtosecond time-resolved optical pump-probe spectroscopy. For normal metals, a nonthermal electron distribution gives rise to a temperature (T) independent electron-phonon relaxation time at low temperatures, in contrast to the T^{-3}-divergent behavior predicted by the two-temperature model. For heavy fermion compounds, we find that the blocking of electron-phonon scattering for heavy electrons within the density-of-states peak near the Fermi energy is crucial to explain the rapid increase of the electron-phonon relaxation time below the Kondo temperature. We propose the hypothesis that the slower Fermi velocity compared to the sound velocity provides a natural blocking mechanism due to energy and momentum conservation laws.

Anomalous f-electron Hall Effect in the Heavy-Fermion System CeTIn$_{5}$ (T = Co, Ir, or Rh)

The in-plane Hall coefficient $R_{H}(T)$ of CeRhIn$_{5}$, CeIrIn$_{5}$, and CeCoIn$_{5}$ and their respective non-magnetic lanthanum analogs are reported in fields to 90 kOe and at temperatures from 2 K to 325 K. $R_{H}(T)$ is negative, field-independent, and dominated by skew-scattering above $\sim$ 50 K in the Ce compounds. $R_{H}(H \to 0)$ becomes increasingly negative below 50 K and varies with temperature in a manner that is inconsistent with skew scattering. Field-dependent measurements show that the low-T anomaly is strongly suppressed when the applied field is increased to 90 kOe. Measurements on LaRhIn$_{5}$, LaIrIn$_{5}$, and LaCoIn$_{5}$ indicate that the same anomalous temperature dependence is present in the Hall coefficient of these non-magnetic analogs, albeit with a reduced amplitude and no field dependence. Hall angle ($θ_{H}$) measurements find that the ratio $ρ_{xx}/ρ_{xy}=\cot(θ_{H})$ varies as $T^{2}$ below 20 K for all three Ce-115 compounds. The Hall angle of the La-115 compounds follow this T-dependence as well. These data suggest that the electronic-structure contribution dominates the Hall effect in the 115 compounds, with $f$-electron and Kondo interactions acting to magnify the influence of the underlying complex band structure. This is in stark contrast to the situation in most $4f$ and $5f$ heavy-fermion compounds where the normal carrier contribution to the Hall effect provides only a small, T-independent background to $R_{H}.$

Crystal Field Effects in CeIrIn5

In this work, we study crystalline electric field effects in the heavy fermion superconductor CeIrIn5. We observe two regions of broad magnetic response in the inelastic neutron scattering spectra at 10 K. The first corresponds to the transition between the gamma7 groundstate doublet and the first excited state doublet at 4 meV interwoven with a broad quasielastic contribution. The second region corresponds to the transition between the ground state and the second excited state doublet at 28 meV. The large Lorentzian half-widths of the peaks (~10 meV) calls into question calculations for the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility that assume sharp crystal field levels. Consequently, we have calculated the inelastic neutron scattering spectra and magnetic susceptibility using the Anderson impurity model within the non-crossing approximation (NCA) including the effects of crystal field level splitting.

Crystalline Electric Field Excitations in the Heavy Fermion Superconductor CeCoIn_5

The crystalline electric field (CEF) energy level scheme of the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 has been determined by means of inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Peaks observed in the INS spectra at 8 meV and 27 meV with incident neutron energies between E_i=30-60 meV and at a temperature T = 10 K correspond to transitions from the ground state to the two excited states, respectively. The wavevector and temperature dependence of these peaks are consistent with CEF excitations. Fits of the data to a CEF model yield the CEF parameters B^0_2=-0.80 meV, B^0_4=0.059 meV, and |B^4_4|= 0.137 meV corresponding to an energy level scheme: Gamma_7^(1) (0)[=0.487|+/-5/2> - 0.873|-/+3/2>], Gamma_7^(2) (8.6 meV, 100 K), and Gamma_6 (24.4 meV, 283 K).

Anisotropy of Thermal Conductivity and Possible Signature of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in CeCoIn_5

We have measured the thermal conductivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 in the vicinity of the upper critical field, with the magnetic field perpendicular to the c axis. Thermal conductivity displays a discontinuous jump at the superconducting phase boundary below critical temperature T_0 ~ 1 K, indicating a change from a second to first order transition and confirming the recent results of specific heat measurements on CeCoIn_5. In addition, the thermal conductivity data as a function of field display a kink at a field H_k below the superconducting critical field, which closely coincides with the recently discovered anomaly in specific heat, tentatively identified with the appearance of the spatially inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconducting state. Our results indicate that the thermal conductivity is enhanced within the FFLO state, and call for further theoretical investigations of the order parameter's real space structure (and, in particular, the structure of vortices) and of the thermal transport within the inhomogeneous FFLO state.

Anisotropic Elastic Properties of CeRhIn$_{5}$

The structure of the quasi two dimensional heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn$_{5}$ has been investigated as a function of pressure up to 13 GPa using a diamond anvil cell under both hydrostatic and quasihydrostatic conditions at room (T=295 K) and low (T=10 K) temperatures. Complementary resonant ultrasound measurements were performed to obtain the complete elastic moduli. The bulk modulus ($B\approx 78$ GPa) and uniaxial compressibilities ($κ_{a}$ $=3.96\times $ $10^{-3}$ GPa$^{-1}$ and $% κ_{c}$ $=4.22\times $ $10^{-3}$ GPa$^{-1}$) found from pressure-dependent x-ray diffraction are in good agreement with the ultrasound measurements. Unlike doping on the Rh site where $T_{c}$ increases linearly with the ratio of the tetragonal lattice parameters $c/a,$ no such correlation is observed under pressure; instead, a double peaked structure with a local minimum around 4-5 GPa is observed at both room and low temperatures.

Heat capacity studies of Ce and Rh site substitution in the heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn_5;: Short-range magnetic interactions and non-Fermi-liquid behavior

In heavy fermion materials superconductivity tends to appear when long range magnetic order is suppressed by chemical doping or applying pressure. Here we report heat capacity measurements on diluted alloyes of the heavy fermion superconductor CeRhIn_5;. Heat capacity measurements have been performed on CeRh_{1-y}Ir_{y}In_5; (y <= 0.10) and Ce_{1-x}La_{x}Rh_{1-y}Ir_{y}In_5; (x <= 0.50) in applied fields up to 90 kOe to study the affect of doping and magnetic field on the magnetic ground state. The magnetic phase diagram of CeRh_{0.9}Ir_{0.1}In_5; is consistent with the magnetic structure of CeRhIn_5; being unchanged by Ir doping. Doping of Ir in small concentrations is shown to slightly increase the antiferromagnetic transition temperature T_{N} (T_{N}=3.8 K in the undoped sample). La doping which causes disorder on the Ce sublattice is shown to lower T_{N} with no long range order observed above 0.34 K for Ce_{0.50}La_{0.50}RhIn_5;. Measurements on Ce_{0.50}La_{0.50}RhIn_5; show a coexistence of short range magnetic order and non-Fermi-liquid behavior. This dual nature of the Ce 4f-electrons is very similar to the observed results on CeRhIn_5; when long range magnetic order is suppressed at high pressure.

Phase Inhomogeneity of the Itinerant Ferromagnet MnSi at High Pressures

The pressure induced quantum phase transition of the weakly itinerant ferromagnet MnSi is studied using zero-field $^{29}Si$ NMR spectroscopy and relaxation. Below $P^*\approx 1.2GPa$, the intensity of the signal and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation is independent of pressure, even though the amplitude of the magnetization drops by 20% from the ambient pressure amplitude. For $P>P^*$, the decreasing intensity within the experimentally detectable bandwidth signals the onset of an inhomogeneous phase that persists to the highest pressure measured, $P\ge 1.75GPa$, which is well beyond the known critical pressure $P_c=1.46GPa$. Implications for the non-Fermi Liquid behavior observed for $P>P_c$ are discussed.

Photoemission and the Electronic Structure of PuCoGa5

The electronic structure of the first Pu based superconductor PuCoGa5 is explored using photoelectron spectroscopy and a novel theoretical scheme. Exceptional agreement between calculation and experiment defines a path forward for understanding electronic structure aspects of Pu based materials. The photoemission results show two separate regions of 5f electron spectral intensity, one at the Fermi energy and another centered 1.2 eV below the Fermi level. The results for PuCoGa5 clearly indicate 5f electron behavior on the threshold between localized and itinerant. Comparisons to delta phase Pu metal show a broader framework for understanding the fundamental electronic properties of the Pu 5f levels in general within two configurations, one localized and one itinerant.

Angle-resolved photoemission study of USb2: the 5f band structure

Single crystal antiferromagnetic USb2 was studied at 15K by angle-resolved photoemission with an overall energy resolution of 24 meV. The measurements unambiguously show the dispersion of extremely narrow bands situated near the Fermi level. The peak at the Fermi level represents the narrowest feature observed in 5f-electron photoemission to date. The natural linewidth of the feature just below the Fermi level is not greater than 10 meV. Normal emission data indicate a three dimensional aspect to the electronic structure of this layered material.

Dynamical disorder of spin-induced Jahn-Teller orbitals with the insulator-metal transition in cobaltates

Using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, we investigated the evolution of the local atomic structure and lattice dynamics of La(1-x)Sr(x)CoO3 (x=0-0.5) as it crosses over with x from an insulator to a ferromagnetic metal (FMM). Our pair density function analysis indicates that in the paramagnetic insulating (PMI) phase for all x, spin activation of Co3+ ions induces local static Jahn-Teller (JT) distortions. The size of the JT lattice increases almost linearly with x. However, in the FMM phase, static JT distortions are absent for x <= 30 %. This coincides with narrowing of hw=22 and 24 meV modes in the phonon spectrum in which we argue is due to localized dynamical JT fluctuations. For x > 30%, static JT distortions reappear along with broadening of the phonon modes because of weakened charge-lattice interactions.

Novel dynamic scaling regime in hole-doped La2CuO4

Only 3% hole doping by Li is sufficient to suppress the long-range 3-dimensional (3D) antiferromagnetic order in La2CuO4. The spin dynamics of such a 2D spin liquid state at T << J was investigated with measurements of the dynamic magnetic structure factor S(omega,q), using cold neutron spectroscopy, for single crystalline La2Cu0.94Li0.06O4. S(omega,q) peaks sharply at (pi,pi) and crosses over around 50K from omega/T scaling to a novel low temperature regime characterized by a constant energy scale. The possible connection to a crossover from the quantum critical to the quantum disordered regime of the 2D antiferromagnetic spin liquid is discussed.

Magnetic structure of CeRhIn_5 as a function of pressure and temperature

We report magnetic neutron-diffraction and electrical resistivity studies on single crystals of the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn$_{5}$ at pressures up to 2.3 GPa. These experiments show that the staggered moment of Ce and the incommensurate magnetic structure change weakly with applied pressure up to 1.63 GPa, where resistivity, specific heat and NQR measurements confirm the presence of bulk superconductivity. This work places new constraints on an interpretation of the relationship between antiferromagnetism and unconventional superconductivity in CeRhIn$_{5}$.

Variable-range-hopping conductivity of half-doped bilayer manganite LaSr$_{2}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$

We report measurements of in-plane $ρ_{ab}$ and out-of-plane $ρ_{c}$ resistivities on a single crystal of the half-doped bilayer manganite LaSr$_{2}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$. In the temperature $T$ range 220 to 300 K, the resistive anisotropy $ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab}=A+B/T$ ($A$ and $B$ constants), which provides evidence for the variable-range-hopping conduction in the presence of a Coulomb gap. This hopping mechanism also accounts for the quadratic magnetic field $H$ and $\sin^{2}ϕ$ dependences of the negative magnetoresistivity $\ln [ρ_{i}(T,H,ϕ)/ρ_{i}(T,H=0)]$ ($i=ab,c$), where $ϕ$ is the in-plane angle between the magnetic field and the current.

Quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in heavy fermion compounds

We present the first femtosecond studies of electron-phonon (e-ph) thermalization in heavy fermion compounds. The e-ph thermalization time tau_{ep} increases below the Kondo temperature by more than two orders of magnitude as T = 0 K is approached. Analysis using the two-temperature model and numerical simulations based on Boltzmann's equations suggest that this anomalous slowing down of the e-ph thermalization derives from the large electronic specific heat and the suppresion of scattering between heavy electrons and phonons.
