Innermost stable circular orbits around strange stars and kHz QPOs in low-mass X-ray binaries

Exact calculations of innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) around rotating strange stars are performed within the framework of general relativity. Equations of state (EOS) of strange quark matter based on the MIT Bag Model with massive strange quarks and lowest order QCD interactions, are used. The presence of a solid crust of normal matter on rotating, mass accreting strange stars in LMXBs is taken into account. It is found that, contrary to neutron stars, above some minimum mass a gap always separates the ISCO and stellar surface, independently of the strange star rotation rate. For a given baryon mass of strange star, we calculate the ISCO frequency as function of stellar rotation frequency, from static to Keplerian configuration. For masses close to the maximum mass of static configurations the ISCO frequencies for static and Keplerian configurations are similar. However, for masses significantly lower than the maximum mass of static configurations, the minimum value of the ISCO frequency is reached in the Keplerian limit. Presence of a solid crust increases the ISCO frequency for the Keplerian configuration by about ten percent compared to that for a bare strange star of the same mass.

Maximum redshift and minimum rotation period of neutron stars

The lower bound on the period of uniform rotation of neutron stars (NS) with causal equation of state (EOS), P_ min, is shown to be determined, with a high precision, by the upper bound on the surface redshift of static neutron star models, z_ max. We obtain z_max=0.851, which turns out to be about 5% lower than upper bound obtained by Lindblom (1984). Using then the empirical formula for the maximum rotation frequency of uniform rotation of neutron star models with realistic causal EOS, derived by Lasota et al. (1996), we establish an approximate relation between z_max and P_min, in which P_min is proportional to the maximum mass of static NS, M_s^ max. In this way we reproduce, within 2%, the exact formula of Koranda et al. (1997) based on extensive exact numerical calculations. Replacing M_s^max by the maximum measured NS mass, 1.442 M_sun, we get a lower bound P_min = 0.288 ms.

Avoided crossings in radial pulsations of neutron and strange stars

Radial pulsations of neutron stars and strange quark stars with nuclear crust are studied. The avoided crossing phenomenon occurring for the radial modes is found and discussed. Neutron star models are constructed using a realistic equation of state of dense matter and strange star models using a phenomenological bag model of quark matter. The eigenfrequencies of the three lowest modes of linear, adiabatic pulsations are calculated, using the relativistic equations for the radial oscillations.

On the minimum period of uniformly rotating meutron stars

We show that the neutron star minimum period of rotation is determined, for causal equations of state, by the maximum value of the relativistic (compactness) parameter 2GM/Rc^2, allowed by causality for static neutron stars, 0.7081, and by the largest measured mass of a neutron star. The relation between these three quantities, resulting from the extrapolation of the empirical formulae of Lasota et al. (1996), yields the minimum period of 0.288 ms, only 2% higher than an absolute lower bound obtained in extensive exact numerical calculations of Koranda et al. (1997).

Rapid differential rotation of protoneutron stars and constraints on radio pulsars periods

Models of differentially rotating protoneutron stars are calculated, using realistic equations of state of dense hot matter. Various conditions within the stellar interior, corresponding to different stages of protoneutron star evolution, are considered. Families of differentially rotating models of a given baryon mass are calculated, using a two-parameter formula describing the angular velocity profile within a rotating protoneutron star. Maximum angular momentum, which can be accommodated by a protoneutron star is calculated, for various thermal conditions in stellar interior, for a baryon mass of $1.5 M_\odot$. In the case of a thermally homogeneous (isentropic or isothermal) neutrino-opaque interior this maximum angular momentum turns out to be somewhat higher than that of a cold neutron star of the same baryon mass, rotating uniformly at the mass shedding angular velocity. However, if the protoneutron star has a thermal structure characteristic of initial state, with a low entropy (unshocked) core, and a high entropy (shocked) outer half of baryon mass, the maximum angular momentum is significantly lower. This leads to a minimum period of uniform rotation of cold neutron stars of baryon mass $\sim 1.5~M_\odot$, formed directly (i.e. without a subsequent significant accretion of mass) from protoneutron stars with shocked envelope, of about 1.7 ms and strengthens the hypothesis that millisecond pulsars are accretion accelerated neutron stars.

Radial pulsations and stability of protoneutron stars

Radial pulsations of newborn neutron stars (protoneutron stars) are studied for a range of internal temperatures and entropies per baryon predicted by the existing numerical simulations. Protoneutron star models are constructed using a realistic equation of state of hot dense matter, and under various assumptions concerning stellar interior (large trapped lepton number, zero trapped lepton number, isentropic, isothermal). Under prevailing conditions, linear oscillations of a protoneutron star can be treated as adiabatic, and evolutionary effects can be neglected on dynamic timescale. The dynamic behavior is governed by the adiabatic index, which in turn depends on the physical state of the stellar interior. The eigenfrequencies of the lowest radial modes of linear, adiabatic pulsations are calculated. Stability of protoneutron stars with respect to small radial perturbations is studied, and the validity of the static stability criteria is discussed.

Rapid uniform rotation of protoneutron stars

Rapid uniform rotation of newborn neutron stars (protoneutron stars) is studied for a range of internal temperatures and entropies per baryon predicted by the existing numerical simulations. Calculations are performed using general relativistic equations of hydrostatic equilibrium of rotating, axially symmetric stars. Stability of rotating configurations with respect to mass shedding and the axially symmetric perturbations is studied. Numerical calculations are performed for a realistic dense matter equation of state, under various assumptions concerning neutron star interior (large trapped lepton number, no trapped lepton number, isentropic, isothermal). For configurations with baryon mass well below the maximum one for the non-rotating models, the mass shedding limit depends quite sensitively on the position of the ``neutrinosphere''. The absolute upper limit on rotation frequency is, to a good approximation, obtained for the maximum baryon mass of rotating configurations. Empirical formula for the maximum rotation frequency of uniformly rotating protoneutron stars is shown to be quite precise; it actually coincides with that used for cold neutron stars. Evolutionary sequences at fixed baryon mass and angular momentum, which correspond to evolution of protoneutron stars into cold neutron stars are studied, and resulting constraints on the maximum rotation frequency of solitary pulsars are discussed.

Damping of GRR instability by direct URCA reactions

The role of direct URCA reactions in damping of the gravitational radiation driven instability is discussed. The temperature at which bulk viscosity suppresses completely this instability is calculated. The results are obtained analytically using recent calculations performed in the case of bulk viscosity due to the modified URCA processes (Lindblom 1995; Yoshida & Eriguchi 1995). The bulk viscosity caused by direct URCA reactions is found to reduce significantly the region of temperatures and rotation frequencies where a neutron star is subject to GRR instability.
