Observation of the rare $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay from the combined analysis of CMS and LHCb data

A joint measurement is presented of the branching fractions $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC by the CMS and LHCb experiments. The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM.

On a Wilson lines approach to the study of jet quenching

We address the geometrical structure of the "skewed" correlator of two space-like separated (almost) oppositely directed Wilson lines. Similar objects occur in the analysis of the transverse-momentum broadening probability function, the first moment of which is associated with the jet quenching parameter. We start from the Euclidean space formulation and then transform the result to the Minkowski light-cone geometry, arguing that this procedure is consistent in the leading order of the perturbative expansion. We discuss as well the issues of the UV, rapidity and IR singularities, and possible use of the proposed approach in lattice simulations.

Bose-Einstein Condensation for Homogeneous Interacting Systems with a One-Particle Spectral Gap

We prove rigorously the occurrence of zero-mode Bose-Einstein condensation for a class of continuous homogeneous systems of boson particles with superstable interactions. This is the first example of a translation invariant continuous Bose-system, where the existence of the Bose-Einstein condensation is proved rigorously for the case of non-trivial two-body particle interactions, provided there is a large enough one-particle excitations spectral gap. The idea of proof consists of comparing the system with specially tuned soluble models.

A microscopic model for Josephson currents

A microscopic model of a Josephson junction between two superconducting plates is proposed and analysed. For this model, the nonequilibrium steady state of the total system is explicitly constructed and its properties are analysed. In particular, the Josephson current is rigorously computed as a function of the phase difference of the two plates and the typical properties of the Josephson current are recovered.

Proof of Bose-Einstein Condensation for Interacting Gases with a One-Particle Spectral Gap

Using a specially tuned mean-field Bose gas as a reference system, we establish a positive lower bound on the condensate density for continuous Bose systems with superstable two-body interactions and a finite gap in the one-particle excitations spectrum, i.e. we prove for the first time standard homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensation for such interacting systems.

Fluctuations in the Bose Gas with Attractive Boundary Conditions

In this paper limiting distribution functions of field and density fluctuations are explicitly and rigorously computed for the different phases of the Bose gas. Several Gaussian and non-Gaussian distribution functions are obtained and the dependence on boundary conditions is explicitly derived. The model under consideration is the free Bose gas subjected to attractive boundary conditions, such boundary conditions yield a gap in the spectrum. The presence of a spectral gap and the method of the coupled thermodynamic limits are the new aspects of this work, leading to new scaling exponents and new fluctuation distribution functions.
