Optimal Estimates for the Electric Field in Two-Dimensions

The purpose of this paper is to set out optimal gradient estimates for solutions to the isotropic conductivity problem in the presence of adjacent conductivity inclusions as the distance between the inclusions goes to zero and their conductivities degenerate. This difficult question arises in the study of composite media. Frequently in composites, the inclusions are very closely spaced and may even touch. It is quite important from a practical point of view to know whether the electric field (the gradient of the potential) can be arbitrarily large as the inclusions get closer to each other or to the boundary of the background medium. In this paper, we establish both upper and lower bounds on the electric field in the case where two circular conductivity inclusions are very close but not touching. We also obtain such bounds when a circular inclusion is very close to the boundary of a circular domain which contains the inclusion. The novelty of these estimates, which improve and make complete our earlier results published in Math. Ann., is that they give an optimal information about the blow-up of the electric field as the conductivities of the inclusions degenerate.

Why does the clustering of haloes depend on their formation history

We discuss in the framework of the excursion set formalism a recent discovery from N-body simulations that the clustering of haloes of given mass depends on their formation history. We review why the standard implementation of this formalism is unable to explain such dependencies, and we show that this can, in principle, be rectified by implementing in full an ellipsoidal collapse model where collapse depends not only on the overdensity but also on the shape of the initial density field. We also present an alternative remedy for this deficiency, namely the inclusion of collapse barriers for pancakes and filaments, together with the assumption that formation history depends on when these barriers are crossed. We implement both these extensions in a generalised excursion set method, and run large Monte Carlo realisations to quantify the effects. Our results suggest that effects as large as those found in simulations can only arise in the excursion set formalism if the formation history of a halo does indeed depend on the size of its progenitor filaments and pancakes. We also present conditional distributions of progenitor pancakes and filaments for low-mass haloes identified at present epoch, and discuss a recent claim by Mo et.al. that most low-mass haloes were embedded in massive pancakes at $z\sim 2$.

An Ion Guide for the Production of a Low Energy Ion Beam of Daughter Products of $α$-Emitters

A new ion guide has been modeled and tested for the production of a low energy ($\approx$ 40 kV) ion beam of daughter products of alpha-emitting isotopes. The guide is designed to evacuate daughter recoils originating from the $α$-decay of a $^{233}$U source. The source is electroplated onto stainless steel strips and mounted along the inner walls of an ion guide chamber. A combination of electric fields and helium gas flow transport the ions through an exit hole for injection into a mass separator. Ion guide efficiencies for the extraction of $^{229}$Th$^{+}$ (0.06%), $^{221}$Fr$^{+}$ (6%), and $^{217}$At$^{+}$ (6%) beams have been measured. A detailed study of the electric field and gas flow influence on the ion guide efficiency is described for two differing electric field configurations.

The Korea Invisible Mass Search (KIMS) collaboration has been carrying out WIMP search experiment with CsI(T$\ell$)crystal detectors at the YanYang Underground Laboratory. A successful reduction of the internal background of the crystal is done and a good pulse shape discrimination is achieved. We report the first result on WIMP search obtained with 237 kg$\cdot$days data using one full-size CsI(T$\ell$)crystal of 6.6 kg mass.

Effects of $τ_1$ Scattering on Fourier-Transformed Inelastic Tunneling Spectra in High-$T_c$ Cuprates with Bosonic Modes

We study the $τ_1$-impurity induced $\mathbf{q}$-space pattern of the energy derivative local density of states (LDOS) in a d-wave superconductor. We are motivated in part by the recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observation of strong gap inhomogeneity with weak charge density variation in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (BSCCO). The hypothesis is that the gap inhomogeneity might be triggered by the disorder in pair potential. We focus on the effects of electron coupling to various bosonic modes, at the mode energy shifted by the d-wave superconducting gap. The pattern due to a highly anisotropic coupling of electrons to the $B_{1g}$ phonon mode is similar to preliminary results from the Fourier transformed inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (FT-IETS) STM experiment in BSCCO. We discuss the implications of our results in the context of band renormalization effects seen in the ARPES experiments, and suggest means to further explore the electron-boson coupling in the high-$T_c$ cuprates.

Measurement of the Lateral Distribution Function of UHECR Air Showers with the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Pierre Auger Observatory is being used to study cosmic rays with energies larger than 10 EeV. An essential quantity that must be deduced from data is the lateral distribution function (LDF). Knowledge of the LDF is important for the reconstruction of the shower core and the shower direction. Here we describe how the LDF is measured using the large sample of events recorded with the surface detector (SD) array and with a small sample observed with the fluorescence detectors (FD). For hybrid events, in which SD and FD measurements of the same shower are available, the core position is much better constrained than for SD-only events, thus providing an important cross-check on the LDF determined from SD measurements alone.

Fourier-Transformed Local Density of States and Tunneling into a $D$-Wave Superconductor with Bosonic Modes

We analyze the effects of the electronic coupling to bosonic modes in a d-wave superconductor. The role of the scattering due to boson on the momentum transfer between electronic states in the Brilloine zone is addressed. We consider specific examples of $B_{1g}$ phonon, breathing mode phonon and spin resonance at $(π,π)$. The Fourier spectrum of the energy derivative local density of states (LDOS) is calculated. To properly calibrate the effects of different modes we fix the quasipartilce renormalization at specific momentum points. It is found that the $B_{1g}$ mode with highly anisotropic momentum-dependent coupling matrix element gives rise to well definded features in the Fourier spectrum, at the energy of mode plus gap, with a momentum transfer along the Cu-O bond direction of cuprates. This result is in a striking contrast to the cases of the coupling to other modes and also to the case of no mode coupling. The origin of this difference is explored in detail. A comparison with the recent STM experiments is briefly discussed.

Entanglement generation in harmonic chains: tagging by squeezing

We address the problem of spring-like coupling between bosons in an open chain configuration where the counter-rotating terms are explicitly included. We show that fruitful insight can be gained by decomposing the time-evolution operator of this problem into a pattern of linear-optics elements. This allows us to provide a clear picture of the effects of the counter-rotating terms in the important problem of long-haul entanglement distribution. The analytic control over the variance matrix of the state of the bosonic register allows us to track the dynamics of the entanglement. This helps in designing a global addressing scheme, complemented by a proper initialization of the register, which quantitatively improves the entanglement between the extremal oscillators in the chain, thus providing a strategy for feasible long distance entanglement distribution.

Measurement of Z-quark, Z-electron couplings and $\sin^2 θ_{W}$ at CDF

The forward-backward charge asymmetry ($A_{FB}$) of $\ppbar \to e^{+}e^{-} X$ is sensitive to the vector and axial-vector couplings of the initial state quarks and final state leptons. Based on the measurement in $72 pb^{-1}$ of CDF Run II data, we measure the coupling constants of the $Z$ boson to quarks and electron. The electroweak mixing angle, $\sin^2θ_{W}$, is also measured through its relation to the coupling constants.

Destruction of antinodal state coherence via `checkerboard' charge ordering in strongly underdoped superconducting BSCCO-2212

Microscopy (STM). At all dopings, the low energy density-of-states modulations are analyzed according to a simple model of quasiparticle interference and found to be consistent with Fermi-arc superconductivity. The superconducting coherence-peaks, ubiquitous in near-optimal tunneling spectra, are destroyed with strong underdoping and a new spectral type appears. Exclusively in regions exhibiting this new spectrum, we find local `checkerboard' charge-order with wavevector Q=(2pi/4.5a,0);(0,2pi/4.5a)+15%. Surprisingly, this order coexists harmoniously with the the low energy

Fermion Condensation Quantum Phase Transition versus Conventional Quantum Phase Transitions

The main features of fermion condensation quantum phase transition (FCQPT), which are distinctive in several aspects from that of conventional quantum phase transition (CQPT), are considered. We show that in contrast to CQPT, whose physics in quantum critical region is dominated by thermal and quantum fluctuations and characterized by the absence of quasiparticles, the physics of a Fermi system near FCQPT or undergone FCQPT is controlled by the system of quasiparticles resembling the Landau quasiparticles. Contrary to the Landau quasiparticles, the effective mass of these quasiparticles strongly depends on the temperature, magnetic fields, density, etc. This system of quasiparticles having general properties determines the universal behavior of the Fermi system in question. As a result, the universal behavior persists up to relatively high temperatures comparatively to the case when such a behavior is determined by CQPT. We analyze striking recent measurements of specific heat, charge and heat transport used to study the nature of magnetic field-induced QCP in heavy-fermion metal CeCoIn$_5$ and show that the observed facts are in good agreement with our scenario based on FCQPT and certainly seem to rule out the critical fluctuations related with CQPT. Our general consideration suggests that FCQPT and the emergence of novel quasiparticles near and behind FCQPT and resembling the Landau quasiparticles are distinctive features intrinsic to strongly correlated substances.

Homogenous nodal superconductivity coexisting with inhomogeneous charge order in strongly underdoped Bi-2212

We use novel STM techniques in concert to study the doping dependence of electronic structure in Bi-2212. At all dopings, the low energy states are relatively homogenous except for dispersive density-of-states modulations whose properties are used to elucidate the momentum-space characteristics of quasi-particles. The superconductive coherence-peaks, ubiquitous in near-optimal tunneling spectra, are destroyed with strong underdoping. A new spectral type, likely characteristic of the zero temperature pseudogap regime, appears in these samples. Exclusively in regions exhibiting this new spectrum, we find a quasi periodic modulations in dI/dV as well as in topograph with Q(2pi/4.5a,0) and (0,2pi/4.5a)+-15%. This is consistent with the existence of a local charge density modulation at these wave vectors. Surprisingly, this state coexists harmoniously with the low energy nodal quasi-particles. We discuss the relevance of these findings to the cuprate phase diagram and to the relationship between the pseudogap and superconductivity.

The CDFII Time-Of-Flight Detector and Impact on Beauty Flavor Tagging

The new CDFII detector incorporates a Time-of-Flight detector (TOF), employing plastic scintillator bars and fine-mesh photomultipliers. Since August 2001 the TOF system has been fully instrumented and integrated into the CDFII data acquisition system. With a design goal of $100 ps$ resolution the TOF system will provide at least two standard deviations separation between $K^{\pm}$ and $π^{\pm}$ for momenta $p<1.6 GeV/c$, complementing low momentum particle identification by means of the specific ionization energy loss measured in the drift chamber. We describe the design of the TOF detector and discuss the current status of its calibration and initial performances. Finally we review the expected impact of the TOF detector in the flavor tagging of neutral $B_S$ meson.

Relativity of Entanglement

It has recently been suggested that various entanglement measures for bipartite mixed states do not in general give the same ordering even in the asymptotic cases [S. Virmani and M. B. Plenio, Phys. Lett. A {\bf 268}, 31 (2000)]. That is, for two certain mixed states, the order of the degree of entanglement depends on the measures. Therefore, incomparable pairs of mixed states which cannot be transformed to each other with unit efficiency by any combinations of local quantum operations and classical communications exist. We make an analogy of the relativity of the order of the degree of entanglement to the relativity of temporal orders in the special theory of relativity.

Chandra Detection of X-ray Absorption from Local Warm/Hot Gas

Recently, with the Chandra X-ray Telescope we have detected several local X-ray absorption lines along lines-of-sight towards distant quasars. These absorption lines are produced by warm/hot gas located in local intergalactic space and/or in our Galaxy. I will present our observations and discuss the origin of the X-ray absorption and its implications in probing the warm/hot component of local baryons.

Entanglement of a two-mode squeezed state in a Gaussian environment

Some non-classical properties such as squeezing, sub-Poissonian photon statistics or oscillations in photon-number distributions may survive longer in a phase-sensitive environment than in a phase-insensitive environment. We examine if entanglement, which is an inter-mode non-classical feature, can also survive longer in a phase-sensitive environment. Differently from the single-mode case, we find that making the environment phase-sensitive does not aid in prolonging entanglement.

Report of Snowmass 2001 Working Group E2 : Electron-positron Colliders from the $ϕ$ to the Z

We report on the status and plans of experiments now running or proposed for electron-positron colliders at energies between the $ϕ$ and the Z. The $e^{+}e^{-}$ B and charm factories we considered were PEP-II/BABAR, KEKB/Belle, superKEK, SuperBABAR, and CESR-c/CLEO-c. We reviewed the programs at the $ϕ$ factory at Frascati and the proposed PEP-N facility at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We studied the prospects for B physics with a dedicated linear collider Z factory, associated with the TESLA high energy linear collider. In all cases, we compared the physics reach of these facilities with that of alternative experiments at hadron colliders or fixed target facilities.

Fuzzy Complex Projective Spaces and their Star-products

We derive an explicit expression for an associative *-product on fuzzy complex projective spaces. This generalises previous results for the fuzzy 2-sphere and gives a discrete non-commutative algebra of functions on fuzzy complex projective spaces, represented by matrix multiplication. The matrices are restricted to ones whose dimension is that of the totally symmetric representations of SU(N). In the limit of infinite dimensional matrices we recover the commutative algebra of functions on ordinary projective space. Derivatives on the fuzzy projective space are also expressed as matrix commutators.
