Dynamics of entanglement via propagating microwave photons

We propose a simple circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) experiment to test the generation of entanglement between two superconducting qubits. Instead of the usual cavity QED picture, we study qubits which are coupled to an open transmission line and get entangled by the exchange of propagating photons. We compute their dynamics using a full quantum field theory beyond the rotating-wave approximation and explore a variety of regimes which go from a weak coupling to the recently introduced ultrastrong coupling regime. Due to the existence of single photons traveling along the line with finite speed, our theory shows a light cone dividing the spacetime in two different regions. In one region, entanglement may only arise due to correlated vacuum fluctuations, while in the other the contribution from exchanged photons shows up.

Quantum correlations through event horizons: Fermionic versus bosonic entanglement

We disclose the behaviour of quantum and classical correlations among all the different spatial-temporal regions of a space-time with an event horizon, comparing fermionic with bosonic fields. We show the emergence of conservation laws for entanglement and classical correlations, pointing out the crucial role that statistics plays in the information exchange (and more specifically, the entanglement tradeoff) across horizons. The results obtained here could shed new light on the problem of information behaviour in non-inertial frames and in the presence of horizons, giving a better insight about the black hole information paradox.

Spin and occupation number entanglement of Dirac fields for non-inertial observers

We investigate the Unruh effect on entanglement taking into account the spin degree of freedom of the Dirac field. We analyze spin Bell states in this setting, obtaining their entanglement dependance on the acceleration of one of the partners. Then, we consider simple analogs to the occupation number entangled state |00>+|11>, but with spin quantum numbers for |11> showing that, despite their apparent similitude, while the spinless case is always qubit x qubit, for the spin case acceleration produces a qubit x qu4it state. We also introduce a procedure to consistently erase the spin information from our setting preserving occupation numbers. We show how the maximally entangled state for occupation number emerges from our setting, we also analyze its entanglement dependance on acceleration, obtaining a greater entanglement degradation than in the spinless case.

Fermionic entanglement that survives a black hole

We introduce an arbitrary number of accessible modes when analyzing bipartite entanglement degradation due to Unruh effect between two partners Alice and Rob. Under the single mode approximation (SMA) a fermion field only had a few accessible levels due to Pauli exclusion principle, conversely to bosonic fields which had an infinite number of excitable levels. This was argued to justify entanglement survival in the fermionic case in the SMA infinite acceleration limit. Here we relax SMA. Hence, an infinite number of modes are excited as the observer Rob accelerates, even for a fermion field. We will prove that, despite this analogy with the bosonic case, entanglement loss is limited. We will show that this comes from fermionic statistics through the characteristic structure it imposes on the infinite dimensional density matrix for Rob. Surprisingly, the surviving entanglement is independent of the specific maximally entangled state chosen, the kind of fermionic field analyzed, and the number of accessible modes considered. We shall discuss whether this surviving entanglement goes beyond the purely statistical correlations, giving insight concerning the black hole information paradox.

Physical qubits from charged particles: IR divergences in quantum information

We consider soft photons effects (IR structure of QED) on the construction of physical qubits. Soft-photons appear when we build charged qubits from the asymptotic states of QED. This construction is necessary in order to include the effect of soft photons on entanglement measures. The nonexistence of free charged particles (due to the long range of QED interactions) lead us to question the sense of the very concept of free charged qubit. In this letter, using the "dressing" formalism, we build physical charged qubits from dressed fields which have the correct asymptotic behavior, are gauge invariant, their propagators have a particle pole structure and are free from infrared divergences. Finally, we discuss the impact of the soft corrections on the entanglement measures.

Scattering of slow-light gap solitons with charges in a two-level medium

The Maxwell-Bloch system describes a quantum two-level medium interacting with a classical electromagnetic field by mediation of the the population density. This population density variation is a purely quantum effect which is actually at the very origin of nonlinearity. The resulting nonlinear coupling possesses particularly interesting consequences at the resonance (when the frequency of the excitation is close to the transition frequency of the two-level medium) as e.g. slow-light gap solitons that result from the nonlinear instability of the evanescent wave at the boundary. As nonlinearity couples the different polarizations of the electromagnetic field, the slow-light gap soliton is shown to experience effective scattering whith charges in the medium, allowing it for instance to be trapped or reflected. This scattering process is understood qualitatively as being governed by a nonlinear Schroedinger model in an external potential related to the charges (the electrostatic permanent background component of the field).

Sequential Implementation of Global Quantum Operations

We study the possibility for a global unitary applied on an arbitrary number of qubits to be decomposed in a sequential unitary procedure, where an ancillary system is allowed to interact only once with each qubit. We prove that sequential unitary decompositions are in general impossible for genuine entangling operations, even with an infinite-dimensional ancilla, being the controlled-NOT gate a paradigmatic example. Nevertheless, we find particular nontrivial operations in quantum information that can be performed in a sequential unitary manner, as is the case of quantum error correction and quantum cloning.

Dirac Equation and Quantum Relativistic Effects in a Single Trapped Ion

We present a method of simulating the Dirac equation in 3+1 dimensions for a free spin-1/2 particle in a single trapped ion. The Dirac bispinor is represented by four ionic internal states, and position and momentum of the Dirac particle are associated with the respective ionic variables. We show also how to simulate the simplified 1+1 case, requiring the manipulation of only two internal levels and one motional degree of freedom. Moreover, we study relevant quantum-relativistic effects, like the Zitterbewegung and Klein's paradox, the transition from massless to massive fermions, with the relativistic and nonrelativistic limits, via the tuning of controllable experimental parameters.

Sequential Quantum Cloning

Not all unitary operations upon a set of qubits can be implemented by sequential interactions between each qubit and an ancillary system. We analyze the specific case of sequential quantum cloning 1->M and prove that the minimal dimension D of the ancilla grows linearly with the number of clones M. In particular, we obtain D = 2M for symmetric universal quantum cloning and D = M+1 for symmetric phase-covariant cloning. Furthermore, we provide a recipe for the required ancilla-qubit interactions in each step of the sequential procedure for both cases.

Inductive Entanglement Classification of Four Qubits under SLOCC

Using an inductive approach to classify multipartite entangled states under stochastic local operations and classical communication introduced recently by the authors [Phys. Rev. A 74, 052336 (2006)], we give the complete classification of four-qubit entangled pure states. Apart from the expected degenerate classes, we show that there exist eight inequivalent ways to entangle four qubits. In this respect, permutation symmetry is taken into account and states with a structure differing only by parameters inside a continuous set are considered to belong to the same class.

Inductive classification of multipartite entanglement under SLOCC

We propose an inductive procedure to classify N-partite entanglement under stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC) provided such a classification is known for N-1 qubits. The method is based upon the analysis of the coefficient matrix of the state in an arbitrary product basis. We illustrate this approach in detail with the well-known bi- and tripartite systems, obtaining as a by-product a systematic criterion to establish the entanglement class of a given pure state without resourcing to any entanglement measure. The general case is proved by induction, allowing us to find an upper bound for the number of N-partite entanglement classes in terms of the number of entanglement classes for N-1 qubits.

Dynamics of momentum entanglement in lowest-order QED

We study the dynamics of momentum entanglement generated in the lowest-order QED interaction between two massive spin-1/2 charged particles, which grows in time as the two fermions exchange virtual photons. We observe that the degree of generated entanglement between interacting particles with initial well-defined momentum can be infinite. We explain this divergence in the context of entanglement theory for continuous variables, and show how to circumvent this apparent paradox. Finally, we discuss two different possibilities of transforming momentum into spin entanglement, through dynamical operations or through Lorentz boosts.

Theory of small aspect ratio waves in deep water

In the limit of small values of the aspect ratio parameter (or wave steepness) which measures the amplitude of a surface wave in units of its wave-length, a model equation is derived from the Euler system in infinite depth (deep water) without potential flow assumption. The resulting equation is shown to sustain periodic waves which on the one side tend to the proper linear limit at small amplitudes, on the other side possess a threshold amplitude where wave crest peaking is achieved. An explicit expression of the crest angle at wave breaking is found in terms of the wave velocity. By numerical simulations, stable soliton-like solutions (experiencing elastic interactions) propagate in a given velocities range on the edge of which they tend to the peakon solution.

Nonlinear absorption in discrete systems

In the context of nonlinear scattering, a continuous wave incident onto a nonlinear discrete molecular chain of coupled oscillators can be partially absorbed as a result of a 3-wave resonant interaction that couples two HF-waves of frequencies close to the edge of the Brillouin zone. Hence both nonlinearity and discreteness are necessary for generating this new absorption process which manisfests itself by soliton generation in the medium. As a paradigm of this nonlinear absorption we consider here the Davydov model that describes exciton-phonon coupling in hydrogen bonded molecular chains.

Nonlinear states and nonlinear tunneling in a potential well

A nonlinear Schroedinger model in a square well and managed nonlinearity is shown to possess nonlinear states as continuous extensions of the linear levels. The solutions are remarkably stable up to a threshold amplitude where a soliton is emitted and propagates outside the well. The analytic expression of the threshold is given in terms of the well size for each level. This process of nonlinear tunneling results from an instability of the evanescent wave inside the walls and can find experimental realization in a proposed nonlinear fiber Bragg gratings resonator.

Nonlinear supratransmission as a fundamental instability

The nonlinear supratransmission is the property of a nonlinear system possessing a natural forbidden band gap to transmit energy of a signal with a frequency in the gap by means of generation of nonlinear modes (gap solitons). This process is shown to result from a generic instability of the evanescent wave profile generated in a nonlinear medium by the incident signal.

Gap soliton formation by nonlinear supratransmission in Bragg media

A Bragg medium in the nonlinear Kerr regime, submitted to incident cw-radiation at a frequency in a band gap, switches from total reflection to transmission when the incident energy overcomes some threshold. We demonstrate that this is a result of nonlinear supratransmission, which allows to prove that i) the threshold incident amplitude is simply expressed in terms of the deviation from the Bragg resonance, ii) the process is not the result of a shift of the gap in the nonlinear dispersion relation, iii) the transmission does occur by means of gap soliton trains, as experimentally observed [D. Taverner et al., Opt Lett 23 (1998) 328], iv) the required energy tends to zero close to the band edge.

A position and a time for the photon

This paper gives a constructive answer to the question whether photon states can contain or not, and to what extent, the readings of rulers and clocks. The paper first shows explicitly that, along with the momentum representation, there is room in the one photon Hilbert space for an alternative position representation. This is made possible by the existence of a self-adjoint, involutive, position operator conjugate to the momentum operator (due to M. Hawton). Position and momenta are shown to satisfy the Heisenberg-Weyl quantization rules in the helicity basis, which is analyzed anew from this point of view. The paper then turns to the photon's time of arrival. By picking an appropriate photon Hamiltonian - using Maxwell equations as the photon Schroedinger equation - a conjugate time of arrival operator is built. Its interpretation, including the probability densities for the instant of arrival (at arbitrary points of 3-D space) of photon states with different helicities coming from arbitrary places, is discussed.
